AIBU to say that the Eurovision Song Contest is utter shite

Just suffered through all of the songs and come to the conclusion that the whole thing is 95% utter shite and 5% just shite

I wasn't keen on the Swedish entry, but I guess they won because of it being the 50th anniversary of ABBA winning? Or were there some politics (as per usual)?!

Finland was the entry I liked most. Energetic dance music.

There are some amazingly ignorant posts on this thread. And the funny thing is a sizeable proportion of those even have words to the effect of 'ive not watched it in years' also included in the post!

I have no problem with people not liking the show, but when they say a pile of bollocks as part of their comments it really does show them up in a way thats not exactly positive.

Eurovision genuinely is an event about bringing people together and a cultural event which goes way beyond what you see on the screen and is in the arena.

If you don't get it, you don't get it and that's fine. But if you haven't been on the VisitLiverpool website this week, please don't say it's just a crap TV show as that doesn't reflect the scale of it.

The countries in Eurovision should be known to anyone who keeps reasonably up to date with the news, but if not, it's easy to Google and learn about any you don't recognise.

It's supposed to be like that OP, how can you not know that? Hannah Waddingham was fantastic and fully in character as a glossy STAR. Mel ? I saw a clip in which she was gurning with a milk churn. Who knows why. It was odd.

Never done EV before. Heard a band I love from the alt scene would be representing Germany and got myself a comfy seat and some metaphorical popcorn.

Ended up voting for Lord of the Lost AND Käärijä, not that it helped Germany. But hooray for Finland making second.

Germany did not deserve to come last - I can see why they didn't win, but they should have been at least middling on the scoreboard.

I didn’t watch this year. I thought the UK song was rubbish. Very unoriginal Dua Lipa rip off. Repetitive and dumb. And they were behaving as though it was the best Eurovision entry for years. Well, the public thought otherwise.

we Used to have quite good songs in Eurovision when I was a kid - Puppet on a String; Boom Bang a Bang; Congratulations; All kinds of Everything. Happy days… and I am now just a grumpy old woman who can’t stand Eurovision.

The 2014 Polish entry featured a woman in traditional costume like Mel with the churn. It was incredibly suggestive and clearly for the straight male audience. It is regarded as a classic Eurovision moment.

Mel was recreating it. It's funny to Eurovision nerds. It's an 'in joke'.

Eurovision is full of stuff like that. Sweden's main intro to the 2016 show was a full musical spectacular which highlighted classic moments in a song called 'love love peace peace'. It featured a man in a hamster wheel which had been in previously.

The ridiculousness and the naffness is part of the show. It doesn't take itself too seriously. It's a glorious departure from the overly perfect American influenced music scene. (And that's also why Sweden didn't get the public vote to the degree that it got the Jury vote and why Finland was so popular).

It wasn’t the best year but I enjoyed it. Even though I wanted Finland to win.

But I think Diggy-Loo Diggy-Ley is one of the best songs ever so my taste may be questionable.

Those old songs were shit. The current ones are shit. The whole thing is shit.
