AIBU to say that the Eurovision Song Contest is utter shite

Just suffered through all of the songs and come to the conclusion that the whole thing is 95% utter shite and 5% just shite

OP posts:

FFS it's shite, it's always been shite. I've watched it most years since Sandy Shaw won, with Puppet on a String in 1968 and it's alway been the most fabulous shite on TV.

Most TV is shite. You maybe watch things I wouldn't give my time to.

To be fair it is less shite now than it was a few years ago - but YES it is still shite. It's so shite it's brilliant shit.

Proof that the exeption proves the rule in the saying 'You can't polish a turd' Because 'Yes you can' - and it's still shite. Wonderfully Naff, kitch and tacky.
Wonderful, OTT shite and I love every minute

TooOldForThisNonsense · 14/05/2023 00:33

it was awful this year, and to add insult to injury, we paid for it and our entry sucked

elm26 · 14/05/2023 00:35

Agreed, I can't stand it.

There was also a clearly very drunk girl stood outside my bedroom window shouting "NIL POI" for 10 minutes earlier 😂

Pyui · 14/05/2023 00:36

Oh bloody hell…

People love to be so snobby about Eurovision…

It has launched the careers of so many artists, and in recent years artists have charted on the U.S billboard and charted hundreds of millions of streams.

The winner had been streamed over 50 million times before the show, as had the Italian artist, who was the most played artist on Italian radio last year.

So no it’s not absolute shite…you are a vibe vacuum.

DrManhattan · 14/05/2023 00:37

Gutted for Finland. Their song was loads better than the winner imo

90stalgia · 14/05/2023 00:38

Winner takes it all rip off was disappointing tonight but the show was a hoot as always! Amidst the weird and the boring and the dirgey there were some great tunes.

I stopped watching it when countries I'd hardly heard of starting win. whereonearthstan. wonitagainstan. neighboursvotedforustan
Loved it when I was a child though

That says a fuck of a lot more about you than about Eurovision.

Agree with @MrsTerryPratchett

TheMoops · 14/05/2023 00:47

Well yeah.... that's the point.
It's harmless fun and you don't have to watch it.

In a cynical world, full of conflict, poverty and division, its nice for one night to put it all aside and to just be silly, over the top, and fun. With crazy costumes, crap songs and smiling faces.

Love it 🇨🇵🇦🇺🇨🇭🇬🇧🇹🇩

Ja Ja Ding Dong!!

Ja Ja Ding Dong indeed!

I voted YABU because I love Eurovision and I loved the show this year. I was a bit disappointed Sweden won. I voted Finland. Cha cha cha cha.

I went to one of the shows this week and it was fabulous. The atmosphere in the arena is amazing.

If you don't like it don't watch it!

Fizzadora · 13/05/2023 22:39

And why oon earth does Mel Giedroyc keep talking over the presenters?

Honestly she should have been cut off, that and her little sketch.

we loved Eurovision and have been listening to the tracks for months, that helps .
UK entry, was poor this year, sadly.

Scarletthoo2 · 14/05/2023 01:02

Never watched it, never will

PaperwhiteTheGhost · 14/05/2023 01:05

You know you don't actually have to watch it right? It's not the Hunger Games.

Clockwork Orange stylee.

katscamel · 14/05/2023 01:06

Agreed it often is pretty crap but it's fun crap. I do think the best thing is that it brings people together....whether house parties, big screenings etc. My mum and her friends have had Eurovision parties for years the numbers are dwindling (it's an age thing). I'm usually overseas when it happens but have had online 'parties'at obscure times with friends in random countries

tiredhadenough · 14/05/2023 01:07

We loved it! Had a party and a great time. Good excuse to get together and fun to laugh at all the acts

Yfory · 14/05/2023 01:13

Our entry was great in the promotional video. Alas she didnt do a great job on stage when it mattered.

Some great songs this year, some totally forgettable as always.
Mel Giedroyc was awesome. As was the bit in the interval when the crowd and everyone on stage was singing You'll never walk alone.

If you dont like it why sit through it all and torture yourself. Switch channels, put a film on, switch off altogether. Do something else.
Its one night a year and great fun for those of us who love it.
We were cheering for Finland and were gutted when they didnt win. The audience in Liverpool clearly wanted them to win too - Cha cha cha!

Yfory · 14/05/2023 01:15

Chispazo time to learn some basic European geography then. Shame on you for being clueless.

0nloop · 14/05/2023 01:17

I watched it last year and this year usually I skip the crap because it's so lame but my partner likes to watch it mainly for voting etc it's so bad it's good kinda thing.

39starstartry · 14/05/2023 01:19

You big killjoy op. Eurovision is so much fun it's super camp, super weird and wonderful. Do you have a sense of fun?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/05/2023 01:20

Oh no, I love Eurovision!

The UK that I see in this Eurovision is the UK I want to celebrate, not the UK I saw at last week’s awful shenanigans.

Was so nice to see a glimmer of my actual country, that has almost disappeared in the past years.

pizzaHeart · 14/05/2023 01:20

@KnickerlessParsons I agree that the song was not so bad but she didn’t perform it well enough today. There was something online about her having voice problems

@LyndaLaHughes
I really liked the last year Ukrainian song. It was interesting mixture of styles with catchy tune and lyrics. And singers could actually sing. It was favorite in our house. You didn’t like it - it’s fine, but it wasn’t abomination.

This. The lighting, sets, professionalism, everything should have us feeling so proud. Imagine the work that goes into just the pyrotechnics. Just the mics? It's incredible.

39starstartry · 14/05/2023 01:23

The songs were much better last year though.

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/05/2023 01:24

LyndaLaHughes · 13/05/2023 22:45

It's awful. I can judge who will win by which songs I find the most hideous. That Ukrainian song from last year was an abomination and it was horrible having to listen to it again.

An abomination? Seriously? I don't think you know what that word means.🫣
