Just suffered through all of the songs and come to the conclusion that the whole thing is 95% utter shite and 5% just shite

YABU

It’s harmless fun.

Turn off if you don’t like. ….end of.

I8toys · 14/05/2023 15:26

YANBU but its like car crash tv. The songs are terrible.

Davros · 14/05/2023 15:26

WeAreTheHeroes I was going to say thanks for a good and interesting explanation, until I got to your last sentence.

SkiingIsHeaven · 14/05/2023 15:30

There were too many ballads and it was all too serious.

It is much better when you get a few bonkers act but there weren't enough of those this year.

PuppyMonkey · 14/05/2023 15:34

OP is like a modern guru or something starting this thread, I mean I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say they think Eurovision is crap before, you’re a trailblazer.Confused

RedToothBrush · 14/05/2023 15:41

Last year we had two non believers over for Eurovision.

This year, one of them suggested the dressing up.

This year we had another two non believers.

They both LOVED it and had a great time.

I think some of Eurovisions real magic is in watching it with others. DH and I have done so for year - mainly online - the last two years have been the only times we've had people over.

It's something I can watch with my overseas friends too.

And that's led to me really loving some of the songs.

I think you either 'get it' or you really don't.

But more than anything, it's fun. And that's infectious.

I stand by my last sentence. It's one thing to say you didn't enjoy any of the songs or thought the outcome of the voting was wrong or weird. It's another to simply say it's shite.

It is shite, it's always been shite. There are lots of other channels, so you didn't need to watch it. I don't think I've even heard the UK song.

Whammyyammy · 14/05/2023 15:57

YANBU, it's utter shite, it's political and nothing to do with music/singing.
Not watched it in years

WeAreTheHeroes · 14/05/2023 15:59

If you haven't watched it for years why do you feel the need to make such comments and what validity do you think they have?

maddiemookins16mum · 14/05/2023 16:07

I love it normally but really struggled with it this year. The interval act was the best, especially Whole Again.

Daffodilwoman · 14/05/2023 16:23

This year is the first time I’ve watched it in years.
Yes it was absolutely bonkers. The graphics were fabulous. I also enjoyed how succinct the introductions were rather than rambling on about each country like I’ve seen in the past.
I heard the UKs entry on the radio and thought it was good. Seeing it live it seemed very flat and lacked something. I bet the atmosphere in Liverpool was electric.
I wasn’t impressed by the winning song-the performers nails and hair extensions were too intimidating for a start and it’s not a song I’ll ever be humming along to but hey ho, everyone there seemed to be enjoying it.

lollipoprainbow · 14/05/2023 16:28

Croatia was the only bonkers performance There's usually loads of outrageous ones. Very bland this year. Maybe because it had been hyped so much.

90stalgia · 14/05/2023 16:33

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/05/2023 13:33

Exactly.

Was so refreshing to see something done well, with grace and beauty, in this country.

Two low points were Sonia singing a song with an incredibly dubious message, and Kate Wales’s grade 3 piano (just why???), but otherwise excellent.

Yes - Kate thrusting her mediocre photographs on the world is bad enough; now she's started with the mediocre piano playing🙄Wish she would accept that marrying a Prince does not bestow artistic talent on a person.

SerafinasGoose · 14/05/2023 16:35

It's always been utter shite.

Terry Wogan's relentless pisstaking of the spectacle whilst the others took it oh, so seriously was the high point of his career.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 14/05/2023 16:38

I loved it.

It's nonsense but why does everything have to mean something or be serious?

Sometimes you just want meaningless fun.

I haven't laughed so much in ages, it was ridiculous, OTT and the commentary was hilarious.

I was really proud of Liverpool for putting on such an amazing show.

Oh, Lord. Wheel Mary Bennet out again, did they?

Eurovision is so bad that it's funny. But the fact that it's shit is what makes it such an entertaining spectacle. It also has something of a nostalgic quality harking right back to childhood.

I'm now quite sorry I was enjoying an evening out and missed it!

Feefooo · 14/05/2023 16:40

Omg it was crap but also funny in a cheesy way. I don't think any top UK artists would do it, I do find it hilarious as I think outside of the US the UK has the most sold artists. Yet looking at eurovision and the results people wouldn't know it.

RedToothBrush · 14/05/2023 17:05

One of my friends has a close relative who is a European artist of note. They were keen to do Eurovision until one of their friends did.

They have said that the circus of Eurovision and the amount of stuff you have to do for months is huge. It cost more to enter than the return they've got from being on it. They said it was unfriendly, took over their life and they didn't enjoy it at all.

The artist doesn't need the exposure in their home country.

Which means there's nothing for them to gain from the experience. And they don't think they would enjoy someone telling them to run from event to event in such a grueling manner with so little control.

So they've gone from being mad keen on doing it to being completely put off.

If it's like that for a European artist, why would a British artist of note feel any better about it.

jcyclops · 14/05/2023 17:06

I despair at all the media commentators parroting government Transport Secretary Mark Harper's idiotic assertion that Rail Unions had deliberately targeted the Eurovision Final for a strike day. Only around 6,000 tickets were available for the final, and there would have been less than 12,000 in the building. In terms of people wanting to travel by rail, Eurovision was a very minor event.

Meanwhile over 38,000 attended the non-league Notts County v Chesterfield football match at Wembley, nearly all who had to travel over 100 miles, and there were eight other football matches that had crowds several times bigger than Eurovision.

Also makes me think, if her basic piano playing is thought to merit such attention, does that mean none of the rest of them play an instrument at all? With all of their wealth and privilege, that’s seems astounding to me.

Sorry to hijack the thread with that thought!

peachescariad · 14/05/2023 17:25

Total shite....have always hated it since I was about 8 and was allowed to watch it....thought most of the acts were freaky and weird.

Eleganz · 14/05/2023 17:27

It is shite, but at least you know what you are going to get. Far better than watching supposedly A-list popstars barking their way badly through their greatest hits like last weekend in my opinion.

What about the 25,000 people who were in the fan zone? Or the thousands of people at other ticketed screenings across the city who came to Liverpool but couldn't get into the either of the above? Or were planning to go to the after show events (there were a few nightclub parties)? Or all the extra Eurovision art exhibitions that were put on? Or the comedy shows? Or the side music shows including the buskers and retail acts? He'll even John Lewis has run a full Eurovision events programme this week! They had about four or five performances in store that I've seen myself whilst passing!!!

I know quite a lot of semi local types who wanted to be in Liverpool on the day for the atmosphere. I was on one of the other Eurovision threads yesterday talking to people thinking of 'just going for the atmosphere' and I was telling them what else was going on in the city.

It was most definitely not just the ticket holders for the main event who have been in the city this week.

Merseyside police say in excess of half a million visitors have been in Liverpool over the 9 day festival. That's way way more than the capacity of the arena. I've had guests over the last fortnight and been to Liverpool four times. I was definitely put off going on Saturday due to the train strikes as Liverpool is a bloody nightmare to escape at the best of times. The traffic has been horrendous all week.

Besides that, you have visitors from all over Europe going to a premier event, already spending hundreds on tickets, unable to get hotels in the city and have had to then pay for a taxi. Even if it is only 6000 capacity.

And it's all the people working the event. It's the biggest police operation Merseyside police have ever run. They need to get to and from the venue. And all the other staff that did the event both directly and indirectly (eg restaurant staff).

Genuinely, the strike was an issue for the event and that's such a shame. And it's annoying that someone comes on and ignorantly says it only the venue. Eurovision is so much bigger than the stadium itself which ANYONE who has been into Liverpool this week would tell you. It's a city wide cultural event over multiple venues.

Badgeringabout · 14/05/2023 17:33

Watched it a few times as a kid but never since. Don't understand the fuss about it at all.
