What about the 25,000 people who were in the fan zone? Or the thousands of people at other ticketed screenings across the city who came to Liverpool but couldn't get into the either of the above? Or were planning to go to the after show events (there were a few nightclub parties)? Or all the extra Eurovision art exhibitions that were put on? Or the comedy shows? Or the side music shows including the buskers and retail acts? He'll even John Lewis has run a full Eurovision events programme this week! They had about four or five performances in store that I've seen myself whilst passing!!!
I know quite a lot of semi local types who wanted to be in Liverpool on the day for the atmosphere. I was on one of the other Eurovision threads yesterday talking to people thinking of 'just going for the atmosphere' and I was telling them what else was going on in the city.
It was most definitely not just the ticket holders for the main event who have been in the city this week.
Merseyside police say in excess of half a million visitors have been in Liverpool over the 9 day festival. That's way way more than the capacity of the arena. I've had guests over the last fortnight and been to Liverpool four times. I was definitely put off going on Saturday due to the train strikes as Liverpool is a bloody nightmare to escape at the best of times. The traffic has been horrendous all week.
Besides that, you have visitors from all over Europe going to a premier event, already spending hundreds on tickets, unable to get hotels in the city and have had to then pay for a taxi. Even if it is only 6000 capacity.
And it's all the people working the event. It's the biggest police operation Merseyside police have ever run. They need to get to and from the venue. And all the other staff that did the event both directly and indirectly (eg restaurant staff).
Genuinely, the strike was an issue for the event and that's such a shame. And it's annoying that someone comes on and ignorantly says it only the venue. Eurovision is so much bigger than the stadium itself which ANYONE who has been into Liverpool this week would tell you. It's a city wide cultural event over multiple venues.
