Just suffered through all of the songs and come to the conclusion that the whole thing is 95% utter shite and 5% just shite

OP posts:
Topseyt123 · 14/05/2023 01:25

It has normally been totally shite. All the songs are usually forgettable.

This year I have managed not to watch it because I am staying with my mother for a couple of days, so I was under no obligation to suffer through it for DH and the DDs.

NotMeSecretFormular · 14/05/2023 01:27

Finland were robbed.
Also Germany! They were fucking amazing! Graham Norton talking through his arse commentating after they played. Cant stand him at the best of times, but come on. Sanctimonious arsehole! Bit of metal, so loud and scary 🙄 bellend.

Agree. Israel and Germany should have swapped places. That would have been my ranking.

Ellie56 · 14/05/2023 01:35

It's always been shite. That's why I haven't watched it for years.

0nloop · 14/05/2023 01:37

@MrsTerryPratchett

I to disliked Isreal's performance and song - complete garbage.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/05/2023 01:37

Also it had a hot Italian guy, so what’s not to like?

Even DD, who rarely expresses an opinion (and typically says women are cute) was rather keen.

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/05/2023 01:40

Austria and Estonia woz robbed.

Spain clearly didn't want to win. They entered a My Lovely Horse song.🤣🤣🤣

Maddy70 · 14/05/2023 01:41

It's bracuase it's shite it's brilliant and so camp I love it

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/05/2023 01:48

Chispazo · 13/05/2023 22:40

I stopped watching it when countries I'd hardly heard of starting win. whereonearthstan. wonitagainstan. neighboursvotedforustan
Loved it when I was a child though

Are you getting mixed up @Chispazo? One of the many many reasons I watch it is geography. Maybe you need an atlas.Wink

larkstar · 14/05/2023 02:01

I preferred the era when you could see 7 babushkas in yashmaks from Belarus playing balalaikas.

AspiringChatBot · 14/05/2023 02:03

@AnSionnachGlic: It would have been better if Ireland had qualified 😁

No issue with Ireland, sure there's a lot of great music, But "Wild Youth" went out of their way to demonstrate that they are sexist pigs and so they deserved to be disqualified.

I quite liked the UK's entry in theory: why NOT a song about girls/women, by girls/women, and for girls/women? It's quite a contrast to the usual boyz boyz boyz context of EV.

TheFireflies · 14/05/2023 02:04

TooOldForThisNonsense · 14/05/2023 00:33

it was awful this year, and to add insult to injury, we paid for it and our entry sucked

Because we didn’t want to pay for it again next year!

I voted for Finland but one bright spot about Sweden winning is that they are fabulous hosts so next year should be a good one.

YABU, OP. it is indeed shite but it’s fabulous shite and I love it.

The Moldovans weren't a million miles away. I think they did a great job of promoting their country.

Loria · 14/05/2023 02:27

Yea Sweden is the home of Eurovision heroes so will be fab. Ol' Loreen though, what was up with her? It was something strong ☹️ maybe even ket, I dunno, she could barely keep her eyes open when she was being interviewed. I love the song and she's a proper Eurovision hero but man she needs to sort herself out.

I love Eurovision. I love how everyone there is positive and having a good time and showcasing their music and busting out all over. There is so much nasty behaviour in the world and Eurovision is a neat counter to it. And the sheer scale of the show now, it is marvellous. It was wonderful to see the throng of people waving to us from Ukraine, same as years ago it was wonderful to see the reception for the Bosnian group who'd literally been shot at as they made their way out of the country to compete, and the Armenians recently returning after taking only a year away due to conflict. Time goes on, war goes on but Eurovision also goes on. I don't think the people who set it up ever envisaged how much it would encompass but it's become an annual night long continent wide party so fair fucks really.

No you just described the Coronation 😄. The Euro song contest was amazing, I waved my flag all night even though I'll concede our actual entry was shite.

OMG12 · 14/05/2023 08:27

Australia were by far the best, followed by Germany (actually will see them in the Summer as a support band) Croatia for pure total wackiness third.

The majority were shit, the UK entry had the stage presence of a dead rat.

But let’s face it, it’s not about the songs, it’s just an extension of Pride now.

MrsToothyBitch · 14/05/2023 08:57

I love the weirdness of eurovision but I thought this years crop of songs was pretty dull and poor. DP was sorry for Mae as he said the radio version was much better. And as excellent as Loreen can be (and very gracious- she seems lovely), we thought her song was awful. Such a sweet coincidence that Sweden won in time for Abbas 50th anniversary, though, no? Grin

I also liked Graham hosting but Mel should never be let near a commentary box again. This isn't her first offence but it should be her last.

Davros · 14/05/2023 09:19

TheMoops · 14/05/2023 00:47

Well yeah.... that's the point.
It's harmless fun and you don't have to watch it.

Except it's taken over most of the BBC, like when Glastonbury's on which I also don't want shoved down my throat at every turn

HoleyShit · 14/05/2023 09:20

What a let down after last year! Our entrant was terrible. In fact the vast majority of the songs were atrocious!

I still enjoyed it though.

Davros · 14/05/2023 09:19

It’s one week and there are other channels

jc12689 · 14/05/2023 09:23

It's harmless fun, not to be taken too seriously.

People who sit through hours of TV that they think is shite, on the other hand, there's no hope for them.

Pemba · 14/05/2023 09:30

Exactly @jc12689 . Yes, it's supposed to be fun. Yes most of the songs were unmemorable etc, but the costumes and performances were great. It's kitsch, you're not supposed to take it seriously. I don't understand people moaning, don't watch it then.

TBH I don't normally watch myself but did this year because of the Ukraine thing and found it both hilarious and heartwarming. 'You'll Never Walk Alone' was such a poignant moment.

bakebeans · 14/05/2023 09:34

It always has been. Tacky and shite songs. That's why it's so loved by some and also so hated by others
