About smoking?

chaosmaker · 13/05/2023 13:10

Weed smokers have moved in next door. The stench is incredible and as an ex-smoker, I'm not keen on fags either which many of the people in my street constantly puff away on.

When I did smoke, I tried to be considerate and not do it much in public just indoors or around other smokers.

Shouldn't people have a right to clean air as smoking actively damages the lungs of people that don't? Is it a form of ABH?

Obviously the government have a vested interest in keeping the sales of tobacco, vapes (no one knows what damage the chemicals in these do) and anything else the tobacco industry sells as they make huge revenue out of it.

Is there a case to ban it in public places as more enlightened countries have done?

YABU - the 'rights' of smokers trump the need for non smokers to breathe less polluted air.
Or
YANBU - nobody has the right to actually harm your body by smoking around you and making public outdoor space a challenge.

are you complaining about the weed smell that's illegal or cigarettes totally legal?
are they doing it outside ?

iLovee · 13/05/2023 13:16

Of course it isn't a form of ABH. Don't be ridiculous.

Weed I understand as it is illegal but people are perfectly in their rights to smoke in their own home/garden. As you did, when you smoked.

I say this also as an ex smoker who noe can't stand the smell

chaosmaker · 13/05/2023 13:25

Complaining about both.

You have my genuine sympathies but YABU. They are bad neighbours but they are polluting the air you breathe far less than motor vehicle traffic.

It's just that you notice it less and people on Mumsnet get really up in the air about smokers even though UK smoking rates are 13 per cent.

But when you ask people to consider using their cars less or getting rid of them totally, they come up with loads of reasons why they can't. Most of them boil down to: "I don't want to because it will inconvenience me." That's very close to "I don't want to" which is what committed smokers say.

As life long non smoker and non driver of 25 years I accept that.

But as I said, it's probably quite shit living next door to heavy weed smokers for many reasons, the health impact being the least, and so you have my sympathies.

Oh great another weekend of smoking threads.

@chaosmaker as someone who has never smoked, let me let you into a little secret all people like me know: when you smoked, you were not being as considerate as you imagine.

We just put up with you until smoking was banned indoors because we had to. We continue to do so now when smokers are outside in the same places we want to be. I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, that's because it's rarely a problem outside.

Why can't you be as tolerant?

chaosmaker · 13/05/2023 17:01

I shouldn't have to be intolerant of something illegal though. As for fags, I think there was a good idea about raising the age to buy them year on year until it's phased out completely and the old smokers have all died off. I think NZ may have that law.
I agree about driving and the pollution that causes too. I'm a social care worker so part of my job is taking people out to access the community. I learned in my 40's and often think life was simpler (and I was fitter) before I drove.
The government are ideologically opposed to making public transport preferable though and won't nationalise it even though we, the public, pay a fortune in subsidising the private companies owning them for no reason I understand.
Higher taxes and free public transport at the point of use would help with that. Probably an unpopular thought on here though.

YABU.

You’re an ex-smoker. At one point that was you stinking to high heaven and making the air toxic.

Karma.

MrsDoylesDoily · 13/05/2023 17:08

No-one's breathing clean air in the UK and I can't get fussed over a bit of fag/weed smoke dissipating outside.

Thinking of the majority of drivers I know, having great public transport wouldn't stop them driving to the local shops, even if they are only a 10 or 20 minute walk away.

Roundandnour · 13/05/2023 17:13

The weed might not be illegal.

You can legally get it in prescription if you are in one of the qualifying groups. And no, it’s not free.

aSofaNearYou · 13/05/2023 17:15

I don't think it's practical to expect people to smoke inside - this would be totally unfair on other inhabitants of their house, especially children.

As you said, the problem is the government having a vested interest in letting people smoke.

iklboo · 13/05/2023 17:15

When you smoked you didn't care about everyone else's 'right' to clean air, did you? As PP have said going anywhere where smoking indoors was allowed was horrible as a non-smoker. Your hair & clothes stank of stale fag smoke. The furniture stank of it. Smokers themselves reeked when they sat next to you at work or on public transport (still do, actually).

It's better now it's banned indoors but I won't sit outside at a pub / restaurant to eat because of the people smoking and vaping smell shit at other tables. It's awful.

BriarHare · 13/05/2023 17:21

I can’t wait for it to be banned outside any hospitality venue. Pub gardens are often foul because of selfish smokers.

Our next door neighbour smokes in his garden. It’s nowhere near us, but we can still smell it, sometimes even in our bedroom. I think smokers should smoke inside their own houses and inflict it on themselves only.

Well..............er.........don't read them then? 🤷‍♀️

hursty900 · 13/05/2023 17:27

I have same neighbours & the stench of weed drifts through my house when I have windows open & make my washing stink. But what can you do..?! I complain loudly but I imagine that just spurs them on 🤣

jc12689 · 13/05/2023 17:30

there's no such thing as a considerate smoker, so may not have thought you weren't affecting other people but you were.

I've never smoked but I always find it amusing how massively preachy ex smokers are. Just remember, what you're thinking now is what everyone else used to think about you, so cut them some slack

TeenLifeMum · 13/05/2023 17:32

I hate the smell of it. They’ve penalised it in Canada and Vancouver just stunk of it all along the sea front when we went for an evening stroll. It will be an interesting experiment as we will be able to monitor psychosis increases.

Can’t stand smoking cigarettes or weed but apparently fresh air isn’t a right according to mnetters.

Is skunk on prescription now?

I hope all those saying YANBU don't drive cars because I can assure you my occasionally smoke does far less damage to your lungs than your cars do to mine (and no, I don't drive).

You would also have to convince LL not to have no smoking policies inside the renters home.

Antisocialfluffmonster · 13/05/2023 17:57

Just going to point out that cannabis is not in fact illegal in all cases. Lots of people now have legitimate prescriptions for it, myself included. (I didn’t actually pick up my prescription as the driving laws are still draconian even if you’ve not used it in a week or more)

if I was going to use it though it would be in my garden and I would absolutely laugh if a neighbour tried to report me.

As for smoking in general, no one should have the right to subject anyone to second hand smoke, but given how much tax smokers pay, I think it’s up to them if they smoke. If you banned smoking you’d better be banning alcohol, caffein and everything else people enjoy.

I honestly don’t understand why people get so concerned about how others spend their time and money. I’d much rather folks were stoned and happy than drunk and obnoxious and violent any day of the week.

chaosmaker · 13/05/2023 18:00

I honestly don’t understand why people get so concerned about how others spend their time and money.

Um because it affects them or those they love, obviously.
