About smoking?

chaosmaker · 13/05/2023 13:10

Weed smokers have moved in next door. The stench is incredible and as an ex-smoker, I'm not keen on fags either which many of the people in my street constantly puff away on.

When I did smoke, I tried to be considerate and not do it much in public just indoors or around other smokers.

Shouldn't people have a right to clean air as smoking actively damages the lungs of people that don't? Is it a form of ABH?

Obviously the government have a vested interest in keeping the sales of tobacco, vapes (no one knows what damage the chemicals in these do) and anything else the tobacco industry sells as they make huge revenue out of it.

Is there a case to ban it in public places as more enlightened countries have done?

YABU - the 'rights' of smokers trump the need for non smokers to breathe less polluted air.
Or
YANBU - nobody has the right to actually harm your body by smoking around you and making public outdoor space a challenge.

I get it OP.
I don't smoke either. My ex husband used to smoke weed and I now have a very strong hatred for it.
I love in a lovely apartment, but someone smokes weeds and it filters down to me. I despise it. I hate smelling it in the corridor aswell.

But what can we even do :(

Totally get it!

I can’t wait for it to be banned outside any hospitality venue. Pub gardens are often foul because of selfish smokers.

Our next door neighbour smokes in his garden. It’s nowhere near us, but we can still smell it, sometimes even in our bedroom. I think smokers should smoke inside their own houses and inflict it on themselves only.

Sure thing, but let’s ban alcohol at the same time. As someone who doesn’t drink, the fact that drunk people are so horrifically obnoxious, and it’s invasive into our culture to such a degree it’s almost become acceptable to admit you can’t do with out it. I hate being around roust sloppy drunk people, and the pukers and the fighters. Just enough. That’s normally why I don’t go to the pub, just like you could avoid smokers by not standing in the smoking areas

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 13/05/2023 18:03

So when you smoked, you were special . A special type of special.

But now everyone else that smokes is inconsiderate and vile and just an awful human being?

Betterbear · 13/05/2023 18:05

Please try to move to a more affluent area. People don't tend to smoke there.

justanothernamechangemonday · 13/05/2023 18:08

Did you worry this much when you smoked, OP?

😂 that’s funny. Not sure if this is the new move to a field or sarcasm.

I live in an affluent area. Weed and cigarettes are smoked. Along with coke and copious amounts of alcohol.

GracePalmer33 · 13/05/2023 18:15

I don't think you're being unreasonable. Some new neighbours moved in when we were at our old house - which was a terrace house - and smoked weed pretty much all day long from 8am in the morning until they went to bed stood right outside the back door which was basically right outside our back door. I couldn't have my windows open ever, unless I wanted my house to stink of weed. Couldn't enjoy my garden. It really made me miserable. Once a day or every so often would have been bearable but on and off all day long just made my life hell.
I don't think it's unreasonable to be upset about it.

chaosmaker · 13/05/2023 18:16

Yup, I'd get rid of alcohol too. I'm not special and when I was a smoker I did think about others. Didn't like smoking around non smokers or outside really.

Surely medical cannabis should be the versions that don't need inhaling? Or just prescribe the cannabidinoids as the THC does nothing to help.

I'm in what would be classed 'affluent' area.. stench of weed is abundant. What do you think the young and entitled do all day...!

Roundandnour · 13/05/2023 18:28

There has been lots of research around the health benefits of weed and thc The medical stuff has different amounts of thc, some of it stronger than the street stuff due to the research. Many dont use tobacco but either roll up a larger quantity of weed or via a pipe.

There is already cbd weed on the market, again totally legal and contains trace amounts of thc. The smell and look is the same as the thc variety.

On going research is also looking at the health benefits of mixing various amounts of cbd and thc.

Yeah, the Chelsea tractors keep the air clean.

Caz1960 · 13/05/2023 18:40

I agree with OP. The smoking ban had just moved smokers outside and in public. It clearly hasn’t worked because people are complaining more than ever.

They should rescind the ban and force smokers to smoke indoors and allow non-smokers to be free to enjoy the cold rain and frost outside in peace to enjoy they smell of their own farts.

I was thinking about this earlier, and am wondering of there ought to be some device invented that the weed and cigarette smokers and vapers can wear - like a space helmet - that recycles their noxious air, so they don't have to share it with anyone. It wouldn't (if it ever did) look or seem so cool then, if their preferred activity made them look like Jude Law in Contagion.

Well I can still reply can't I.

They are bad neighbours but

Nobody has a right to intrude into your space with smoke.

Hah, have said this to friends a lot. Or make vapes that can't release a stream of whatever that crap inside them is. Then it wouldn't look so 'cool' I mean you'd have thought there would be uproar on this site about how it is marketed to children.

I find ex smoker's are the worst for complaining about smoking. Weed I would find slightly annoying but that is up to them.

@chaosmaker But you still did it, because you felt like it. And now you don't. Lucky us.

What's your objection to alcohol? Is there anything else you plan to give up that we should know about?

Alcohol in the uk was for purifying water - small beer. Now we don't need it. Interesting to think of the world if we had never made all this stuff or kept it going long after we no longer needed it.
Alcohol causes as much harm as smoking - just usually not to other people. Unless you happen to be the victim of a violent drunk.

I also dislike very strong perfume/deodorant that catches in the back of your throat on other people. Lynx is the worst along with all aerosol ones. Roll ons are a lot calmer. Just cause you asked @limitedperiodonly

I honestly don’t understand why people get so concerned about how others spend their time and money.

Um because it affects them or those they love, obviously.

But you used to do exactly this.

TunnocksOrDeath · 13/05/2023 22:48

Our neighbours smoke weed outside the block so as not to stink out their own flats. It blows straight through the trickle vents and windows and into our home, where our four year old lives and sleeps (we're on the ground floor). It's just bloody rude.
