To think I’m too old for this footwear?

I am told from reliable cool teen/young adult sources that crocs and tevas are cool and I should get some.

I don’t mean for a camping trip, I mean for actual day to day life. I am looking for comfortable with a bit of heel support, so no flip flop, slip on type summer shoes to nip to the shops in and such. I already have Birkenstocks.

Aibu to feel that crocs and tevas have an age limit when it comes to coolness? Will I just look even older than I am in my teva walking sandals and comfy crocs?

I'm about to turn 50 and have Tevas (tirras which do have some support), my 74 year old mother has some too, the only downside is that they can get a bit smelly. I don't know if either of us are too old but you will tear them off my cold dead feet they are so comfy!

Young people can wear crocs and Tevas in an ironic ugly-shoe way and make them look cool.

On middle aged people they just look like….well, a middle aged person in crocs or tevas! 🤣

Yep

Crocs are not cool!

Crocs are super cool.

Ahaha yes! I think this but the kids are persuading me that I need some for my city breaks this year 🙊

Yea, Merrells are the perfect cross between functional and pretty for me. Much nicer than Tevas.

Merrells apparently aren’t cool!

I watched a French lady of about 30 earlier walk through a mall I was sat in and noticed she was wearing crocs. I’d posted to this thread before I left the house so I instantly thought of it.
Anyway, she had on beige crocs with similar colour wide leg trousers, a blouse a beautiful checked scarf and a knee length coat. She looked extremely classy and the whole look really suited her.
Surprised me a bit how good she made them look.

I found tevas pinched a nerve on my foot - and the strap wasnt too tight either - think it was how the strap lay as I walked in them. Anyway - I give them to my husband (they are black). I love my Saltwaters - had them years - not very supportive as sole is very flat but they've been literally all over the world with me.

If you must wear "ugly" shoes, I would recommend Skechers for a city break from a comfort and support point of view.

Disclaimer: I have several pairs of Birkenstocks and Skechers and have had Crocs so this is absolutely not style or beauty advice 😂

Jazzyjezzabelle · 12/05/2023 10:19

Many things that are cool for a 20 year old are ageing for a 50 year old, crocs are one of them. As folks assume ghe 20 year old is following fashion and being quirky and assume the 50 year old has bad feet and wants comfy .

I was told I need cool ones and sketchers aren’t cool, however I do love mine and agree they are so comfy!

I'm in my 60s and wouldn't wear them

Nor would anyone in my family (30s-40s)

So only wear them if YOU like them. Coolness is in the eye of the beholder and in mine and my family's eyes they are not.

Tigofigo · 12/05/2023 13:35

I wear both but you have to style Crocs carefully not to look like you've just forgotten to put your real shoes on. If your clothing style is quite conservative I wouldn't.

Why are you so bothered with 'cool' when if you care surely comfort and style is more apt?

And nothing so far has been stylish

I was told by the reliable sources that beige would be a good colour for me actually, how weird!

I have some beige and white striped pattern shirts and to team with wide leg linen trousers and beige crocs.

Apparently the tevas also in a beige/brown colour (I think they are called sand dune, foam bottom ones) will look great with dresses.

They are! I have a teen. Younger people love them.

Presumably ironically?

Beige (imo) is very very aging

I’m not usually bothered with cool at all but my reliable sources are desperate to treat me to a pair of ‘trendy’ footwear for our city breaks. I’m willing to try as they’re very excited by the prospect.

They originally suggested white but I can’t get over that I feel they look like those white scholl shoes that nurses used to wear!

To think I’m too old for this footwear?

Of course they’re not ‘ageing’ on older people. Older people are as old as they are old. Their shoes will not make them look either younger or older.

LynetteScavo · 12/05/2023 17:12

My fashion conscious 17yo shleps around in Crocs- I however would only wear them in the house/garden/beach. But then, she thinks it fine to wonder around in boxer shorts, and like hell I'm doing that Grin

I think of Tevas as non fashion items, completely inoffensive, unless you have mal my feet.

LynetteScavo · 12/05/2023 17:13

ChocChipHandbag · 12/05/2023 18:23

So, is it only certain styles of Teva that are "cool" then, or is it the brand? Only, looking at the Teva and the Merrell website the shoes don't seem that much different to me?

Couple of examples attached.

To think I’m too old for this footwear?

Yep, more kids are wearing crocs. I'm ok with them. I like tevas and so does my daughter.
