To keep my son off school.

GM.

My partner has been admitted into hospital for treatment for his OCD.

Our 6 year old son is upset and confused, our 17 month old is staying at my partners mother until he has finished his treatment and is feeling better.

Yesterday he behaved pretty badly, and is refusing to go to school today. I really don't want to send him, because I don't know how he is going to behave whilst there, and I will probably be on edge for the whole day

How was your younger boy when you went to see him?

He was fine thanks for asking, I trust his nan to give him the best care, she is fully aware of my struggles.

Thanks, yes I'll tell them tomorrow.

Tomorrow? You didn't tell them today?

SchoolShenanigans · 09/05/2023 20:13

For your children's sake I hope you get some serious help.

BadNomad · 09/05/2023 20:24

This setup is very damaging and unfair for everyone in it. You really should consider getting social services involved to see what they can do to help. Your family needs a lot of support.

Agree with this. This thread is so desperately sad (for the children).

Because I didn't.

Why would I get social services involved? I have a great support system already, my good friend is supporting me as well as my partners mother.

Because you can't see why this is so damaging for your children. You had to send your youngest away and consider keeping your oldest off school so no one can see how badly you are coping. That isn't normal. The way you are handling your family's issues is not addressing those issues. They're just temporary fixes. It won't take much for it all to fall apart. If your MIL dropped dead tomorrow, what would you do? You need to be able to cope with life yourself, for your children.

You need talking therapy and medication for your extreme anxiety. It’s not fair for your children to grow up around untreated mental illnesses. It’s incredibly damaging, even more so than being hit by a parent. If you care about the wellbeing of your children then you will seek professional help.

TheShellBeach · 09/05/2023 20:54

I just don't believe that you understand how damaging all this untreated mental illness is for your little boys.

You've also not answered people's questions regarding why you feel you'd be able to care for a daughter and not a son.
Because that's weird, frankly.

I think it could be really helpful for you to get some professional help and support, for yourself and your children.

A lot of people are telling you that what you're saying here about how you're not coping, your attachments and parenting style, your relationship, etc are concerning. The current situation clearly isn't working - you're not coping, your children aren't coping - and the most appropriate way to have things change for the better is to seek professional help.

What would you like life to look like for your children? Is this really the best you hope for, for them?

As parents, we should always be looking for ways to do what's best for our children.

Because you are both mentally ill and not looking after your children correctly.

Sending a 17 month old child away because you can't "cope" with two children is shocking. Your children are going to be scarred for life by your appalling behaviour.

I am already in therapy, and I'm not going to take medication either, well I can't right now.

Genuine question why won't you take medication for your anxiety

Please take your medication. I was the child with a mother who didn’t treat her mental illness. She never hit me and I was always dressed and fed, but mental illnesses damage your loved ones. Please take your medication for your sons’ sake.

Even if she is pregnant she can still take medication

Are you forgetting that my partner is in hospital? I don't know the effect it is going to have on me.

It could make me sleepy, very drowsy etc. I need to care for our 6 year old to the best of my ability.

I've settled him in my bed with his iPad, hopefully when I go up to check on him he has fallen asleep.

OP posts:
Sirzy · 09/05/2023 21:29

But you can’t care for him to the best of your ability now.

single parents manage to look after their mental health with medication while also looking after their children.

You will be fine how do you think single mums start medication. There not that strong you soon adjust

You could take the anxiety medication before you go to sleep. Your body quickly adapts to medicine. You’re clearly struggling to cope with 2 children whilst also having severe anxiety so you desperately need medication so you can be the best mother to your children. It sounds like you don’t want to even try medicine, even when you can take it at night.
