To ask if you have a problem with the burkini?

Honest answers please

would you give a woman (maybe Muslim maybe Jewish) a wide berth if you saw them wearing a burkini or modest (Ie fully covered) swimsuit at a pool?

if you see a woman wearing one do you give it a second thought or is it just a meh, who cares?

tia

Sorry you had that experience. Don't let other people's reactions stop you using the pool. Most people are not looking or don't care. If some give you dirty looks then don't take any notice.

I'll be honest op. Whether it's my town but I would be suprised and my children would most definitely ask.

I would not give you a dirty look or shake my head. Some people are just rude in life. I would most probably chat randomly with you like I do with most people.

Thing is, maybe some wouldn’t but I’d prefer that, especially if a child asked because they are curious and if it’s out of the norm it’s perfectly natural to have questions (within reason of course)

the comments weren’t like that though, it was from one large group of people and it was along the lines of disgusting, unhygienic, so this is modern British whilst shaking heads and that poor little girl, directed at my daughter

I'm also wondering why anyone would give a woman a burkha a wide berth. It literally has zero impact on anyone else.

BungleandGeorge · 07/05/2023 20:49

I think it’s great that women are willing to risk getting these comments so that they can get themselves out to the swimming pool with their kids. I presume they just didn’t go before? Or went to all ladies sessions? As long as it’s fit for swimming in people should wear whatever they like. I’m seriously considering ditching the standard one piece and getting something more covered up with shorts because I’m fed up of adjusting it!

fortheloveofflowers · 07/05/2023 20:45

I think they are great, I’d wear one but would be worried I’d be called out for not being Muslim.

Don’t let ignorant pricks put you off.

Maybe don’t wear the head piece unless you want to but we don’t own modest swimwear, they make 3/4 ones too if you don’t want to do wrist to ankle, they are very flattering x

I would presume she was Muslim, but wouldn't really care

Whatever she is happy wearing.

(Unless she's not, and being forced - but that would be an entirely different thread!)

BrokenBonesStixStones · 07/05/2023 20:50

I doubt I’d even notice, I’d that preoccupied with feeling insecure myself. If I did notice I wouldn’t think anything

Inkypot · 07/05/2023 20:50

Can honestly say it wouldn't bother me, judge not lest you be judged and all that. It's none of my business what anyone else wears to swimming unless they bounced in fully nude to the local pool.
I wear a bikini or tankini because it's what fits but I don't have the model body to go with it. Do I care what others think about my swimming attire? A little bit. Will it stop me? Nope.
I am religious (Catholic) and while our expressions of our faith may differ, I would respect and understand you doing what is right for you. Go back to the swimming OP and have fun with your loved ones.

Paq · 07/05/2023 20:50

I have a huge problem with women wearing those "cheeky cut" swimsuits with their arses on show. No problem with a burkini

You’d have to wear it to a women’s only session too or at least 3/4 bottoms, a normal one piece or bikini would only be permissible in front of hubby or maybe kids

Seen loads when on holiday in Morocco, they were all doing pool aerobics. Felt a bit sorry for them as they filled with air and didn't look comfortable at all.

This was my thought when I saw a woman wearing one in a local swimming pool. It had loads of fabric bagging around and getting in the way and looked really awkward. My two thoughts were ‘that would totally get on my nerves’ and ‘I bet her husband is swimming in normal shorts’.

Of course I wouldn’t have said or done a single thing - it’s a free country and each to their own. But the reminder that in some communities, women are held to different moral standards than men is always depressing.

Pigriver · 07/05/2023 20:52

I would be jealous and wish I was wearing one so I didn’t have to shave my legs and wax my bikini line!
I live in a city with a large Muslim population and teach in a school with an even larger one. Lots of friends are Muslim so I really wouldn’t bat an eye lid as women often wear then at the frequent female only swim sessions.

I don’t agree that modesty is about oppression. Some people just prefer to dress modestly.

Tigofigo · 07/05/2023 20:53

I'm sorry you encountered such awful discrimination OP.

Whatever people wear to swim it's not on to make disparaging comments about it.

If you feel able to please continue to wear it, normalise it.

itsgettingweird · 07/05/2023 20:54

I'd notice.

Same as I'd notice a woman in a bikini, or swimsuit or tankini or whatever else they are wearing.

As to thinking anything? Nope. The same as I don't think anything of the other people I see.

But I did have a conversation with a friend the other day about how much better it is now it's seen as much more socially normal/ acceptable to cover up your body in the pool/beach.

I'm much more comfortable in swim jammers and tankini.

ExtraOnions · 07/05/2023 20:54

I wear a cossie with long arms, that goes to my knees - as I have bingo wings & fat thighs.

My issue is (and always will be, with all clothing), one of choice. Women should be able to choose what they want to wear, without a patriarchy telling them they need to “cover over” and “be modest” for fear of arousing men (as, of course, it’s a woman fault if a man can’t control themselves).

SalmonEile · 07/05/2023 20:54

I wear a long sleeved rash guard and swim leggings over my suit
it’s for personal reasons not religious, so honestly I wouldn’t think about you wearing yours
sorry you had such a nasty experience

SteakExpectations · 07/05/2023 20:55

Absolutely no problem with them -
I find it odd that some people take it upon themselves to be so judgemental and hateful.

I’d treat you like any other mum with children that I saw while swimming, and I’m sorry to hear that you had such an awful experience today.

Thanks ladies!

i just had the most awful experience at a public swimming pool with my kids today, first time I’ve taken them in the UK normally hubby does. Dirty looks, head shakes, and very audible comments from a few ladies.

I’d wanted to go every week for some healthy family fun, and it’s a very nice pool, lovely splash area but truthfully was a bit iffy on going back.

I’m so sorry to hear that OP. Those people must have nothing better to do with their lives.

What really annoys me is people who think they’re being feminist or “pro women” in some way by taking this stand. Do they think that this will make women some how shake of the “oppression” of wearing what is essentially a bigger swimming costume, and conform to what they think is the norm? Actually what it’s going to do is prevent some women from taking part in healthy activities like swimming.

I get what you mean, sort of, but I’ve seen lots of ladies in bikinis have to constantly re adjust themselves, and that must be a real pain too. The ladies you saw must’ve been wearing the very baggy ones, the ones I have dont do that.

I'm a very white, white woman who likes to be covered up on the beach as I burn easily. Although we mainly holiday in the UK where I burn and freeze. I'd probably be a bit jealous. I've thought about getting one myself but my usually liberal friend was horrified at the thought and that threw me.

I'm sorry you experienced that.

But it says far more about them than you.

Please don't let anyone else stop you spending precious time with your children.

Realfastfoodie · 07/05/2023 20:57

Honestly I think they look quite cool, and if I had seen you I might have asked you where you got yours. I quite fancy being able to swim without baring so much skin.

The people making comments were ignorant.

Pootle23 · 07/05/2023 20:58

Can’t see the problem with them. As others have said, I’m more interested in getting in the pool quick and hiding 🫣
