Well, I hated the coronation…

I can see I am in the minority on here but I found yesterday to be distasteful on a gigantic scale. To watch the most privileged people travel in gold coaches & be decorated with diamonds and gold that is priceless in the face of millions of people struggling to eat/heat their homes just feels so wrong.

Our primary school has just opened a food bank. There are kids & families in crisis- children coming into school hungry & smelly as families can’t afford to wash clothes (I am not joking) - living in Dickensian conditions. Some of the teaching staff use the foodbank.

Yesterday was a display of obscene wealth. The royals didn’t even pay for it- we did. How can we find money for that absolute nonsense yet we can’t find money for large swathes of the population to feed themselves.

While Charles was sitting there in his gold costume holding these priceless items, plenty of families weren’t eating. It made me really angry.

I am tired of all the arguments for a royal family- how somehow these displays are quaint. Yesterday was an obscene display of wealth, inherited privilege and everything that’s wrong with this country. Seems a conversation about the royals is long overdue.

I know lots of families are struggling, but how much does it cost to wash clothes? People used to do this in a river years ago

🤣🤣

That was before tons of sewage were pumped into them. Better to smell these days, I think.

Agree totally with OP

ApostrophicThinker · 08/05/2023 19:26

Are you aware of the shit that is being pumped into our rivers? Not the best option for washing clothes....

Cotonsugar · 08/05/2023 19:27

I didn’t watch one second of it. Spent time in the countryside and enjoying hobbies. Never watch royal weddings. My parents have always been royalists as were my late grandparents so I’m not sure why I haven’t inherited their views. Just not interested at all, consequently my grown up children aren’t interested either because I never talked about it with them. These over privileged people will continue, conversation or no conversation 😐

TheTruthWillSetYouFreeMaybe · 08/05/2023 19:27

Agree

I thought the poster was probably referring to the sovereign grant being 25% of income from crown estate, so 75% of crown estate income goes to the treasury.

It specifically says income tax and he is the only one to pay that rate!

AnnieSnap · 08/05/2023 19:34

There are plenty of us around @TheColourofspring The sycophants are very loud and defensive. It doesn’t mean we are wrong about the ostentatious display by an anachronistic nonsensical system. The £250 million of taxpayers money could have been used for our struggling public services, but the establishment don’t care a jot about that.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/05/2023 19:40

I’d rather have a benign monarchy than a corrupt republic

Oddly enough a corrupt republic isn't the only alternative available - which is pretty lucky considering some of the RF have shown themselves to be corrupt too

mbosnz · 08/05/2023 19:42

How do you feel about a corrupt monarchy and a corrupt Government?

Spirographcity · 08/05/2023 19:44

Mirabai · 08/05/2023 13:33

Yes we do - you read the manifestos and choose which parties are align with what you want your money spent on, and if you don’t like what they do vote them out.

You can punish Rishi in the next GE if you don’t like what he did with your money.

Don't be ridiculous. I didn't vote for Michelle Mone to make money out of selling substandard equipment to the NHS making millions on the back of her contacts in Government. Was that in the manifesto?

It's not much good voting them out years after they've done all the damage. The damage is still there.

Did anyone really vote for the Government running down all public services so we have to wait six hours when we've had a stroke or suspected ectopic pregnancy? I think what they actually promised us was more money for the NHS as a result of the disastrous Brexit deal.

Even if Governments didn't lie, it's unlikely that the manifestos meet all our criteria. It tends to be the least of evils rather than the party that you believe in that people vote for.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/05/2023 19:46

How do you feel about a corrupt monarchy and a corrupt Government?

Extremely badly, if the question was meant for me, mbosnz

The difference of course is that we can more easily get rid of a rotten government

Can we? This one’s clinging on like shit on a blanket. It feels like they’ve been in for about 50 years.

Lovetoplan · 08/05/2023 19:51

A lifelong supporter of the RF I also felt quite uncomfortable about the coronation. It was an unnecessary display of wealth and privilege. I can't accept the Charles and Camilla thing either - Queen Camilla - no. Happy to have a RF but they should live quietly now just making chatitable contributions in person and in kind.

I know lots of families are struggling, but how much does it cost to wash clothes? People used to do this in a river years ago, so I doubt s blob of soap is the problem here.

I haven't read the full thread but it's likely been pointed out its the cost of electricity, water and drying clothes that inhibits washing not to mention those living in temporary accommodation not having access to equipment, space etc.

If you watch any historical dramas thers usually a few unwashed families, it's not a new problem but one we should be trying to solve, not ignore.

Regards the coronation, I watched a bit, its what I expected, I'm in 2 minds about royalty but if no one watched it they'd soon pack in.

I never said you can control every single decision the government makes - but the country voted in a corrupt, dishonest PM and a party that likes to give contracts to rich friends - what did expect? Tories do as Tories have always done.

Of course the country voted for a government to deplete public services, one that explicitly wants to privatise the NHS - it voted Tory! No-one can be politically naive enough not to know what that entails.

1000N · 08/05/2023 20:02

Roussette · 08/05/2023 18:49

My post is to @1000N

I don't want them to leave this thread thinking Charles pays 75% income tax and is the only person in the country to do so! It would be very awkward to say that to anyone in real life!

The higher rate of tax is 40%

Correction on that accepted. I
didn’t inVent the number- i read it somewhere but i accept the correction :)

VivX · 08/05/2023 20:03

Not a fan of the RF. Didn't watch one second of the coronation or the concert after it.
The whole thing was an unnecessary waste of money just for some old bloke to put on a hat.

Seems oddly subservient, given we're in the 21st century.

Tbf I look at Labour in Wales and SNP and think the same about length of governing and Labour poor quality

I doubt people will vote them out though even with all that

This (government’s) clinging on like shit on a blanket. It feels like they’ve been in for about 50 years

Tell me about it, Blossom Sad but that's why I said we can get rid of them more easily rather than it being some overnight thing
Realistically I doubt we'll see the end of the monarchy in my lifetime, but hope not to have to wait that long to see the back of this government!!

Totally agree with you Op

BinkyBuntyFintyCunty · 08/05/2023 20:17

In 2023, no-one should be expected to bow or curtesy to anyone else. Do the royals really not feel awkward when this occurs? Are they that brainwashed into really thinking they’re better than everyone else? A King & Queen in crowns in a gold coach and waving to the peasants from their palace balcony just seems shockingly out of touch and obscene for the times we’re living in. I don’t understand how they justify such deference and ridiculous wealth to themselves. How can they visit soup kitchens and still sleep at night/allow themselves to be carried in a gold coach. It just doesn’t sit right.

Coxspurplepippin · 08/05/2023 20:26

'In 2023, no-one should be expected to bow or curtesy to anyone else.'

No-one's expected to bow or curtsey to anyone.

Linda409 · 08/05/2023 20:28

I agree. I went to great lengths to avoid watching or hearing about it. I find it deeply offensive to display such wealth. The jewels were stolen from other countries and should be returned. It is wrong to flaunt privilege when working people annd non working people are starving.

Roussette · 08/05/2023 20:30

Coxspurplepippin · 08/05/2023 20:26

'In 2023, no-one should be expected to bow or curtesy to anyone else.'

No-one's expected to bow or curtsey to anyone.

Even Kate curtseyed to her FIL when he arrived for the concert. A small curtsey but she did. How strange is that.

People bow and curtsey all the time to C&C.

Happylady165 · 08/05/2023 20:33

Totally agree with you OP.

I’m not entirely sure how/why people can watch it and not question the extreme equality, classism, nepotism and huge links to colonialism.

There has been great interviews with some of the people staffing the event, where some said they were given no lunch, toilet or drink breaks and are being paid minimum wage for they 18 hour shift. Meanwhile a man born into wealth rides by in a golden carriage 🙄
