Well, I hated the coronation…

I can see I am in the minority on here but I found yesterday to be distasteful on a gigantic scale. To watch the most privileged people travel in gold coaches & be decorated with diamonds and gold that is priceless in the face of millions of people struggling to eat/heat their homes just feels so wrong.

Our primary school has just opened a food bank. There are kids & families in crisis- children coming into school hungry & smelly as families can’t afford to wash clothes (I am not joking) - living in Dickensian conditions. Some of the teaching staff use the foodbank.

Yesterday was a display of obscene wealth. The royals didn’t even pay for it- we did. How can we find money for that absolute nonsense yet we can’t find money for large swathes of the population to feed themselves.

While Charles was sitting there in his gold costume holding these priceless items, plenty of families weren’t eating. It made me really angry.

I am tired of all the arguments for a royal family- how somehow these displays are quaint. Yesterday was an obscene display of wealth, inherited privilege and everything that’s wrong with this country. Seems a conversation about the royals is long overdue.

Hitler was elected. Allende. Putin.
The pretence of democracy does not protect against tyranny.

Exactly my point.

OK Hmm Nicholas Maduro is President Venezuela, a different country altogether. Venezuala is not a stable country. Chile is. Google isn't your friend today!

I just object to a poster writing off the whole of South America. Very rude.

🙄
I was responding to the earlier claim that the region of South America was a bastion of democracy. I was going to wade through all of HRW for you but you came up with yet more drivel about dictators and so I decided to deal with that instead.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 07/05/2023 10:47

@Coxspurplepippin the uks biggest landowner is the Crown Estate.

TeenLifeMum · 07/05/2023 10:50

I’d far rather see the carriages and jewels used. They exist anyway so it’s not like someone said “right, we’re organising a coronation so Betty can you order a new gold carriage and Dave, we need the most expensive crown you can buy.” They already have this stuff so they’re reusing it.

That's got to be a Norwegian bridge dweller having a wacky Sunday morning surely !

You have the wrong poster. I have brought up nothing about dictators, I have just answered posts that have. Maybe respond to the poster who talked drivel about dictators. It wasn't me.

Middle class Middleton wants her own bling - borrowing doesn't cut it, apparently.

And Charlotte wore Alexander McQueen too.

I can't believe I am typing that about an 8 year old Hmm

Can we hope and pray this is the end of all this ridiculous extravagence. Charles needs to shape up and stop being so greedy with all of this.

Apparently the you missed the history lesson on the difference between monarchy and government.

And you missed that I was replying to a pp holding up Chile as a bastion of democracy compared to the Royal Family.

OK - I knew it was Scotland, not sure about UK as a whole, as I said. Difference I suppose is that the Crown Estate can't just sell off the land to whoever unlike Povlsen.

Can you clarify what you mean by "drivel about dictators"

Because none of us has said anything not factually correct about the ones in recent Chilean history.

Nothing to do with me. See the post below. I am only mirroring what a poster said to me.

I can only imagine the world is laughing at us right now. We look ridiculous. A load of ostentatious twaddle and a conspicuous display of wealth is in poor taste when so many people are struggling.

I don’t get comments like this.
So “the world” has got it all figured out?
No inequality in other countries, no poverty, no corruption? Apart from the fact that there are quite a few other countries with royal families.
As an immigrant in the UK I find this reversed exceptionalism baffling.

watcherintherye · 07/05/2023 10:18

I'm with you OP. It was unpleasant and made me long for us to have a republic for the first time.

Just like the USA? Where there is no poverty and the President and family live plain and frugal lives without having their every whim catered to? Yeah, right.

You’re very naive if you think there’s any model of government which won’t have the rich/poor divide, with those at the top always being amongst the very richest. Denmark, a country with one of the lowest rates of poverty in the world, also happens to be a constitutional monarchy, btw.

I really like the Danish RF. interestingly they have a very high approval rate. Maybe the RF should look to them to see how they differ in their reign. (I don’t know as I’ve only just recently been acquainted with them).

Roussette · 07/05/2023 11:02

I haven't.

PrettyMaybug · 07/05/2023 11:12

How lovely to see that almost HALF of almost one a half thousand people on here disagree with you. 😆

And that, coupled with the 100s of 1000s of people around Buckingham Palace yesterday, and the fact that 20 MILLION people watched it on TV, proves THE ROYAL FAMILY ARE HERE TO STAY.

Suck it up buttercup. No-one cares that you 'hated the Coronation.' Literally, NO-ONE.

YABU @TheColourofspring

The viewing figures, and the 100s of 1000s of people at the Palace/in The Mall, along with the poll on here, are making a mockery out of the haters who think the Royal Family are finished, and no-one wants them. Your numbers are smaller than you want them to be haterz! Grin

TheApplianceofScience · 07/05/2023 11:12

I didn’t. That poster was comparing Chile with U.K. not the royal family specifically.

The original comment in that thread was to the effect that the U.K. is a rum kind of democracy with a monarch. Which is true.

I admire your righteous anger so early in the morning but NO ONE is a bit of a push though, but all views are welcome. Thanks for sharing.

The tories love all this division. It stops people blaming the real.people to blame. THEM.

Whose fault is the lack of social housing? Who creates the policies on homelessness and benefits? In whose interests is it to keep the poor down? Who creates the policies on taxation, tax havens?

FancyFanny · 07/05/2023 11:22

TheApplianceofScience · 07/05/2023 11:12

This summed it up for me.

There's only so many food banks these days because food banks have become 'a thing'. They are not a measure of poverty.

Poverty rates are lower than they have been at many other times in the past when we had few food banks.

Novella4 · 07/05/2023 11:23

Tories and 'royals' are linked

I know! Royalists talk like it is either one or the other that can be questioned. Very strange.
