To think less of dh because he voted for Brexit and reads The Daily Mail?

I know the Brexit vote was years ago but it really made me lose respect for dh. Obviously we've moved on, but he doesn't read a newspaper apart from the Mail online, is obsessed with tiktok and had no idea who the Archbishop of Canterbury was today. He's in his early 50s. I'm not a pretentious arse but I read a newspaper daily and have a pretty good grasp of politics. I'm beginning to feel as though we don't have much in common. We've been together for 30 years!

All that matters is whether you love him. If you have contempt for him because of his politics then the marriage is dead.

Not sure it's this black and white. I do love him but I find myself getting more and more irritated by the doom scrolling tiktok and DM

Do you vote Tory?Because they whole heartedly also supported the Iraq war at the time.Another difference is that Labour didn't put 'wage war against Iraq' in its manifesto. Whereas we were all told how damaging Brexit would be in advance, some of us chose to believe Nigel Farage and the Daily Mail and voted Leave anyway. I say this as someone who hasn't voted Labour since the Iraq war

@Kendodd who do you vote for?

Put your cards on the table

Usually Green
Voted Lib Dem recently as they had the best chance of getting the Tory out.
I would now vote Labour again, enough time has passed.
Proud to say, I've never voted Tory although I think John Major was very good, as was Rory Stewart.

This is MN. Literally no one here voted for Brexit or reads the Mail (despite at least one threw a day based on a Mail story, with faux outrage calling it daily fail’. Strange that. Since Mail is the most read online paper in the county and 17 million people voted for Brexit. But hey, this is MN.

Kendodd · 06/05/2023 23:49

@gypsytrampandthief
Who do you vote for?

gypsytrampandthief · 06/05/2023 23:50

Lifelong labour voter.

Despite repeated reservations.

Loads do
On account of us not all being the same person

Hawkins003 · 06/05/2023 23:52

I prefer the daily mail as it's free and the science articles are usually detailed

grumpycow1 · 06/05/2023 23:55

Rainbow1901 · 06/05/2023 21:58

No hope for me then I read the Daily Mail, Daily Express and The Guardian!! DH doesn't read any papers but is a keen watcher of the daily news so keeps abreast of day to day stuff that way. We will often discuss articles I've seen or he's watched. It's interesting to see how the papers and the news channels perceive the news and the stand they take. They are not always impartial!
How we vote is an individual choice it does not have to be a deal breaker!

But you read a variety of papers - as opposed to getting all of your news from the DM only (which in my life eventually makes people seem brainwashed to one way of thinking) Voting is a personal choice but if you suddenly find that you disagree on the most fundamental things, then many would reevaluate a relationship.

Mumsnet never fails to go this way.
Sanctimonious leftie remainers bleating on about how awful it is that people think differently to them and how morally superior they are.
has it really not sunk in yet?
you’ve been on the losing side again and again yet still consider yourselves morally and intellectually superior to the people who vote for the wining side.
OP - If you don’t like your husband anymore and consider him too stupid to be with someone as well informed as you please tell him and let him find someone who will appreciate him.

You remind me of an old Mothers of Invention song, on the album 'We're only in it for the Money'. The song's called 'Plastic People'. Frank Zappa was right on the money and in 1966!!!

Take a day and walk around
Watch the Nazis run your town
Then go home and check yourself
You think we're singing 'bout someone else..

CharlottenBerg · 07/05/2023 00:10

Guardian says:

Revealed: Labour won back swathes of Brexit voters in the local elections
Analysis of ‘key ward’ figures shows the coalition of Tory support that was built by Boris Johnson has fallen apart

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! The fight back has started. Make no mistake, the Tory hard right culture warriors really are Fascists. And there's only one way to beat Fascists, as we last learned 1939-1945. It means choosing which side you're on.

TheHandmaiden · 07/05/2023 00:14

Well turns out Brexit voters don't like paying more tax, getting less and still not being in control of borders.

CharlottenBerg · 07/05/2023 00:15

One think I have to say: if you think the Daily Mail is bad (and it is execrable), you should take a look at the Daily Express!

I agree. Most definitely few people admit to either on mumsnet. I assume most people are making up the outrage!

On another note to the op. It sounds like he's having an affair or pushing you away, you sound like your bored and looking for an excuse to leave. Dh and I do not hold many similar political views or media interests. But there is way more to us than that. Sorry to say it sounds like the both of you have lost respect for each other.

Whapples · 07/05/2023 01:06

Me and my DP disagree on loads of political stuff and it’s not an issue! We agree on the things that matter most to us so I don’t really care who he votes for as long as our priorities are the same. We have healthy debates between us and with our families who also have a wide range of views. Very rare for anyone to get upset and when they have, it’s usually due to something bigger rather than solely due to that debate. I think that there’s probably a deeper reason that your losing respect for your DH.

bozzabollix · 07/05/2023 07:47

Kendodd · 06/05/2023 23:33

It's the ones who voted to 'get Brexit done' I really can't stand.
By 2019 everyone knew how damaging Brexit would be for the hard won and fragile peace in NI, it had even claimed the life of Lyra Mckee. Leave voters didn't give a shit, they watched the birth of the New IRA and voted to push Brexit through anyway.

That’s the really unforgivable part. None of them gave any sort of shit about the mess they were putting NI back into. Peace in Northern Ireland was a huge achievement and put at risk for what?

OP that’s a tough situation. I’d be seriously worried about my husband if he went down that route to the point I’d probably get him to go and get checked out it’d be so out of character. Is it dramatically out of character for your husband or has he been drifting in that direction for years? Social media has a lot to answer for, he’s probably had a load of targeted bullshit in his direction and he’s believed it.

My FiL is similarly challenged. Made each family event dreadful with his loudly expressed ignorant opinions. In the end my husband had a chat and suggested he use apple news rather than just the DM, which thankfully he has, and reading a broader range has started to challenge his opinions a bit. Apple news is fab for reading across the spectrum of opinion.

DunkingMyDonuts · 07/05/2023 08:30

I think you need to look at why you feel he isn't acceptable to you when he makes his own political and entertainment choices OP.

Your jumping on the poster who asked if he was allowed to "wipe his own bum" spoke volumes

LlynTegid · 07/05/2023 08:33

I'd not think ill of someone who did not know who the Archbishop of Canterbury is. Nor of someone who pays little interest in politics, given the nature of the political process and the low quality of most politicians.

Reading the Paper that Supported the Blackshirts with its mix of hatred and young 'celebrities' gossip would be much more concern to me.

x2boys · 07/05/2023 08:36

Maybe he thinks less of you ,because you believe your political views are more important than his🤔

Ladykryptonite · 07/05/2023 08:37

Well they kinda are given his views

RocketIceLollie · 07/05/2023 08:37

You sound a bit too obsessed with politics if you are letting it interfere with your relationships in life. Does he work hard to provide for his family? Is he a good father? Is he loyal? Those are the important things.

Dedodee · 07/05/2023 08:42

I’m not a daily mail reader as such but I do read the headlines of most internet free newspapers including The Guardian, Mirror and the Mail.
I don’t think reading a particular newspaper is the problem, it’s believing obvious bs, being swayed by prejudice and not applying any independent thought process that’s the problem.
Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

User1264876 · 07/05/2023 08:48

A lot of people would probably prefer to read the Times but you have to pay for that

CherryCokeFanatic · 07/05/2023 08:50

Do you have children?

I think it would be very hard to keep shagging someone who voted against your children’s interests and reads the DM which probably leads to increasingly toxic political, economic and social views over time

icanneverthinkofnc · 07/05/2023 08:59

A lot of people change as they age, DM was a 1960s girl into music, cinema, and dancing. She had 2 DC out of wedlock and was a single parent. Now, in her 70s, she is a fully paid-up, judgmental daily mail stereotype. partly influenced by her obnoxious husband
I'm happy to say I read The mail amongst others things but can think critically and laugh at the absurd.
