To think less of dh because he voted for Brexit and reads The Daily Mail?

I know the Brexit vote was years ago but it really made me lose respect for dh. Obviously we've moved on, but he doesn't read a newspaper apart from the Mail online, is obsessed with tiktok and had no idea who the Archbishop of Canterbury was today. He's in his early 50s. I'm not a pretentious arse but I read a newspaper daily and have a pretty good grasp of politics. I'm beginning to feel as though we don't have much in common. We've been together for 30 years!

I’m glad he’s reading the Daily Mail, it’s a paper which champions women’s rights.

Ugh

@Pineda
Only because you 'allow it'

I voted Brexit thinking that the NHS would be better off . I didn’t do my homework and have regretted my vote for many years . I definitely was ignorant but didn’t realise it at the time 🤷‍♀️

Did you also vote to 'get Brexit done' in 2019?

BonnieLisbon · 06/05/2023 23:23

I'd rather be single. Sorry.

Pineda · 06/05/2023 23:20

Tbf this is what dh thinks. I know he regrets it but deep down I think it was so stupid I can't get past it.

Yes I made a stupid choice but I genuinely at the time with a million other problems thought it was the right vote…I am not stupid 🙄

No, he's never asked for permission to wipe his own bum. That's just something you've made up in your head.

So does Putin.
Big fan of him as well?

I didn't say you were. Dh isn't stupid really. But it was a stupid thing to do.

I think less of anyone who reads the Daily Mail, irrespective of how they vote.

CosyFanTucci · 06/05/2023 23:26

It’s impossible not to lose respect for someone who voted for Brexit. The Daily Mail has a supernatural skill at pandering to people’s lowest instincts - it poisons people. Both are a complete turn-off.

Definitely didn’t vote for BJ if that is what you are asking!

SleazyLizzard · 06/05/2023 23:27

id rather read the Daily Mail than the Guardian, I cancelled my subscription to the Guardian when I realised they sack Gender Critical journalists and employ the odious Owen Jones.

I read the Guardian because its free and not hugely right wing. I swerve Owen Jones though.

Sounds like you don't know him very well?
Been with my DH for nearly 30 years and if he'd suddenly started voting for Brexit and reading the Daily Mail it would have signalled a major personality change that would have me thinking WTF?!

Pineda · 06/05/2023 23:30

I'm not so obsessed with the trans issue that I think the DM is a decent paper.

You’ve lost respect for him.
I think that’s one of those things that ultimately break relationships pretty quickly.
Doesn’t matter if the reason is the Daily Mail or he’s given up looking after himself or he’s done something stupid. It’s that feeling.
Have a look at yourself too. How have you changed? Has that impacted his changes or was he always a bit different in his thinking to you?

It's the ones who voted to 'get Brexit done' I really can't stand.
By 2019 everyone knew how damaging Brexit would be for the hard won and fragile peace in NI, it had even claimed the life of Lyra Mckee. Leave voters didn't give a shit, they watched the birth of the New IRA and voted to push Brexit through anyway.

Probably reads the mail because it's free, a lot of MN read the mail, they say they don't but they always know what's in it and come on here and moan about it.

Exactly. And then they simper, I just read this in the Daily Fail. Thereby trying to signal a contempt for a paper they clearly enjoy reading.

Tbf he didn't vote for our (useless) tory mp in 2019.

All that matters is whether you love him. If you have contempt for him because of his politics then the marriage is dead.

Depends how widely they differ - if mine suddenly started spouting Daily Mail type racist stuff we'd have a clash
