To think William should have made more effort

To learn that one line pledge to his father? He read from a card looking sideways most of the way through it, and he looked like he was bored and rushing through it. Looked terrible on screen.

I know he's lazy but it wasn't too much to ask for, was it - to memorise that line and at least fake a bit of sincerity?

You said no one had a television. But they did.

The Coronation was also shown at the Cinema.

And according to the history of the BBC. 10.5 million people watched it on Television and 1.5 million watched it in pubs and cinemas.

Then I stand corrected. 🥂

Rockhall · 07/05/2023 19:00

Personally I would rather have genuine errors rather than artificiality. Diana‘s mix up of Charles‘ name was adorable, so was Charles‘ „thy gods“ much more authentic and likeable. Cue cards should be there as a back up, not as a reading exercise

HB8 · 07/05/2023 19:01

Well I don’t blame him using the card- I don’t think you understand the momentousness of the occasion

CherryCokeFanatic · 07/05/2023 19:03

Biggest family of scroungers in the country

Well I've never been to a wedding or a funeral where the minister has done it all from memory. They've read it out. They can't all be lazy.
I somehow doubt that if William had mixed up "I promise to be your liege man of life and limb and earthly worship" that people would find it a charming mistake.

It wasn't an entertainment show performed by actors, it was a church service. I can't recall ever seeing a church service where everyone wasn't reading from an order of service, prayer book or something similar.

Clergy are prescribed to read the script, that‘s why they are called so.
Newly weds are supposed to answer by heart, as a symbol of commitment from the heart.
Simple, really.

Lol such hard workers. Never mind the nannies, butlers, maids, cleaning team, servants. they barely wipe their own backsides. No wonder they secretly laugh at the gullible plebs.

exactly!!!

No, they would have been straight on here complaining if he couldn't remember it he should have had it written down. Honestly, the ridiculous, petty fault finding makes people look more than a little silly.

The problem with using it as a backup is that if you're overcome with nerves halfway though, you'll make it even worse by taking time to turn to look at the card, find your spot and then correcting and starting mid sentence. Might as well refer to the card all the way through.

PurpleWisteria1 · 07/05/2023 19:10

He knew his words inside out and back to front.
But he wanted to card just to double check under pressure.
Lots of people like to still have the words written down dispite knowing them
Case in point the people at my church who have been saying the Lord’s Prayer every week for 40 years but still glare at it reading off a sheet every week.

Or have a quick glance to jog your memory, and then look him in the eye and pretend that you really mean it

That is compulsory. Thereby called clergy.

I'm fairly certain the OP is the same person who complained that William settled his phone hacking case, as happens in the vast majority of such situations. I said at the time that if he had insisted on a trial, she'd then be complaining about him using public resources and clogging up the courts instead of accepting an out of court settlement like everyone else.

This ridiculous post convinces me I was correct. Did William nick her lunch money back in the day or what?

Missingpop · 07/05/2023 19:13

How the fuck do you know he’s lazy? Are you privy to the goings on if his diary; day to day working life? Has it occurred to you that the poor sod might have been shitting red hot embers; knowing it was his fathers biggest day & one of the countries most historical moments; rather a broad sweeping comment to make.

Huh? I wasn’t talking about the clergy? I meant the parishioners. General public!

🥱

Charles was happy. Nuff said.

TiredyMcTired · 07/05/2023 19:16

Yabvvvvvu. I’ve had to speak in public on occasions where I could have been expected to ‘know my stuff’. The nerves and pressure were immense without millions of people watching me and I still needed notes, so I’m not surprised that key people at the coronation needed prompt cards. It was a wonderful ceremony, good on everyone involved!

Missingpop · 07/05/2023 19:16

wow you really talk a load of bull*t

Rockhall · 07/05/2023 19:19

Agree it was a wonderful ceremony. Little moments like this can ruin a show though. The director behind the TV cameras should have been warned though to avoid facial close-ups when reading😉

Nofurme · 07/05/2023 19:21

Honestly I don’t care if they use cards or not. Only care we wasted £100 million on such pomp and nonsense.

ps

i wouldn’t even have taken a free seat at the front.
viva la republic - #not my king 🤣

Fascinate · 07/05/2023 19:25

You do realise that every you see live on TV is exactly the same, it's just that the autocue is out of shot

Rockhall · 07/05/2023 19:27

To be fair, I am considered to be an excellent public speaker with nerves of steel. When it came to my father’s funeral though, I couldn’t even finish the first sentence. Needed to hand it over to the MC. So I have some sympathy.

However, my father passed away unexpectedly and such representation wasn’t in my job description. I was definitely not prepared for it all my life, and the death of a father is probably more shocking than his anointment, or so I was led to believe

GreekDogRescue · 07/05/2023 19:29

Don’t be so ridiculous

Rockhall · 07/05/2023 19:30

Don’t be so Prince Anne 😁
