To think Camilla should not have been crowned Queen

She should have been Princess Consort as we were told she would be. Instead the usual airbrushing of history to try and make her acceptable by clever spinning. And positive press. Bit sickening since Edward VIII had to abdicate over marrying a divorced woman.

@Roussette very beautiful. Can see the same sleeves etc!

I love this style so much.... Today's are so restricted.

"Bit sickening since Edward VIII had to abdicate over marrying a divorced woman."
Things have changed. At that time, Queen Mary (Edward VIII's mother) could not 'receive' a divorced woman at Buckingham Palace. She could certainly not attend the wedding.
I agree this seems archaic to us today, but that is how it was. Divorce is very common these days, but was much rarer then. I am not sure whether there were differences in US compared to UK, in that it may have been more common in the US than UK, maybe.

Presumably only beautiful women can be loved? Glad some people think otherwise.

Thanks! The lace on the sleeves is beautiful. It was very puffy all of it, but didn't crease despite being silk!

Charles' first marriage was always going to fail because Diana & him were fundamentally incompatible. His second marriage is a true partnership and by making her queen Charles he has shown he has grown in maturity: a good husband always steps in if people to treat his wife as a second class citizen, even in the face of opposition. Camilla is his wife so if they both want, she can be queen and now she is.

CarrieAnnQ · 06/05/2023 21:02

Personally I agree with you.
I don’t have anything against either of them but the fact that they had a long term affair is what bothers me.

Strawberrydelight78 · 06/05/2023 21:02

FFS prince Phillip could never have been a king that would have ment he was above QE. She was born into the royal family prince Phillip wasn't. She was next in line to the throne after her father passed. So he had to be given a title as her husband.

It's a whitewash for the new king, nothing else. I guess as 'subjects' of said king, you choose what you want, what you believe. Honestly, you are all ignoring the way you and they treated Princess Diana but, you do you. It's a joke of a coronation tbh.

The way we treated Diana? Are we supposed to feel bad about our supposed treatment? Like millions of other people in the UK, I never treated her any way, I didn't impinge on her life and she didn't impinge on mine.

Not voting. I've nothing against Camilla specifically, I just think in future "Queen" should be reserved for Queens Regnant, and consorts can be Princess.

BasiliskStare · 06/05/2023 21:10

@Roussette - I can see why you say of its time but when I was young I coveted a ball gown / dress with a big skirt. I think it looks lovely & I bet you looked fabulous in it.

Why? For 1000+ years, kings' wives have been queens. Why does that rule need to change now?

RunningRunningRunningRunningRunning · 06/05/2023 21:17

He should have been allowed to marry her in the first place, Diana was used to give him children, she was young, naive, a virgin and already a lady, the royal family picked her, not Charles. His marriage was effectively an arranged marriage, that clip when they got engaged is so painful to watch. Once diana had fulfilled her role she was surplus to requirement and they literally got rid of her. Can't imagine camilla would have been queen had diana lived.

He's not a nice man and lacks a moral compass. She shouldn't be queen but nor should he be king.

There’s a moronic post going around Facebook today, with a picture of Diana and the caption “should of been your day”.

Some People are so deluded

You need to check your facts. There was no promise that she would be princess consort; there was simply an expression of intention. How many times have you changed your intentions over the last 18 years?

The queen didn't "apparently" say she should be known as queen consort, she issued an official expression of her wishes to that effect. There is no "mission creep" in Camilla being crowned queen, the queen consort is the queen, and Camilla has been queen since her husband acceded.

You may choose to try to maintain a belief in Diana's sanctitude by proclaiming that any negative information is "propaganda", but unfortunately for you there is far too much indisputable evidence that she was no saint.

Wrong. The 2005 royal agreement stated that Camilla would be princess consort. Queen is not the same title queen consort and it is absurd to suggest they are - if they were the same Elizabeth II wouldn't have stipulated queen consort and they wouldn't have bothered dropping the consort part.

By the way, I'd recommend reading people's posts to the end as I addressed the inevitable accusation of being some kind of Diana fan. It's absolutely ridiculous.

Spinninggyro · 06/05/2023 21:34

Incredibly unpleasant messages from some people on here. And Camilla is our queen now so just get on with it.

loislovesstewie · 06/05/2023 21:36

Prince Philip was actually a prince of both Greece and Denmark.

DappledThings · 06/05/2023 21:39

The 2005 royal agreement stated that Camilla would be princess consort.
It stated an intention. Very clearly. Intentions change. The late Queen herself overrode that intention with her later statemejtnthat she wanted Camilla to be Queen.

Queen is not the same title queen consort and it is absurd to suggest they are
Except, as has been explained a gazillion times, it is the same. The Queen Mother was Queen Consort and Queen Elizabeth, her MIL was Queen Consort and Queen Mary, her MIL in turn was Queen Consort and Queen Alexandra. And so on.

What is absurd is people refusing to accept this simple fact and thinking Queen Consort is some kind of newly invented and lesser title. It literally isn't.

DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder · 06/05/2023 21:41

I think something else that's at play here is that everyone thinks of Elizabeth II as "The Queen". Camilla needs some other title to distinguish her.

Most people I know still call her Camilla.

40thmonarch · 06/05/2023 21:42

The look between Charles sat with his crown and camilla with hers as she walks towards him.
It's love
