They can protest peacefully. Why should people with huge placards and megaphones ruin other people's enjoyment?

They can protest peacefully with small signs, but their rights do not trump others rights. It's nothing to do with free speech, you've only to look at social media. Free speech is alive and well.

What rights do you think they are trumping?

There is no 'right to enjoy a coronation' or 'right to go out in public without seeing large placards'.

There is a right to protest though...

A protest I saw on tv was megaphones and huge signs. Not peaceful. Anyone protesting at anything and ruining it for others piss me off. Those twats gluing themselves to the highway or climbing up high buildings, all need arresting,

Going to a rally in Hyde Park - you would need a megaphone.

And huge signs - for the rally.

How is that ruining it for people in the Mall?

Its not really a good idea being surrounded by a lot of pro monarchy people which means police will have to deal with the anger on both sides... let's face it the antis aren't known for being peaceful.

It's one day, I don't understand why you would go through so much effort to say "not my king", it would be like me turning up to a JC talk to say "have a wash".

By all means do that. That would be absolutely fine. What would not be fine would you to be arrested for it.

Peaceful means non-violent. It doesn't mean quiet or invisible.

cakeorwine · 06/05/2023 08:54

The police can arrest you if they think you are going to be disruptive now.
Or if they think you are going prepared to cause disruption - if you have a chain and padlocks in your car, that could be enough

So why aren't they arresting Just Stop Oil protestors who prevent people getting to work or hospital?

polkadotdalmation · 06/05/2023 09:38

@MyUsernameIsBetterThanYours They are overriding the rights of people who go to see an event they want to enjoy. Megaphones and placards that lock their view pisses a lot of people off.

Why don't they start a political republican party?

Who really needs arresting are the corrupt members of parliament who allowed the mis sale of PPE to make millions and the heads of the energy companies who are making billions while people freeze to death or starve.

polkadotdalmation · 06/05/2023 09:40

@cakeorwine So you don't think a megaphone blaring in your ears or a sign blocking the view, is disruptive.?

If you went to a paid concert and people behaved like this, would you feel that's fine.

Peaceful protest is not an issue for anyone. Megaphones are not peaceful.

HRTQueen · 06/05/2023 09:40

Give over being turned into a state like China and North Korea 🙄

security at such events is extremely tight it has to be for everyone there any group that is causing disruption will make this more difficult

rattymol · 06/05/2023 09:41

Huge signs are peaceful protest. This country is becoming ever more authoritarian.

LiveAHappyLifeBePositive · 06/05/2023 09:41

Whilst everyone has a right to peaceful protest, whether we agree with the cause or not
These protestors are not known for peaceful protest, they could have protested any day of the year but here they are to ruin , for many many others, an event that many people will never experience again.

So, in this case, I shall support the police.

There is no legal right to see an event you want to enjoy without others spoiling it for you.

I went to the theatre the other week and my view was blocked by the giant man sitting in front of me. I don't get to have him arrested or removed because my enjoyment of the show was spoiled.

rattymol · 06/05/2023 09:42

It had been agreed beforehand with the police where protesters could stand with banners.zero reason to arrest them.

So you think it's ok to arrest people for carrying placards in a van and having a megaphone in a van?

OP posts:
m00rfarm · 06/05/2023 09:43

Did not look particularly peaceful to me. And many people want to watch the coronation without being distracted by placard waving and shouting people. This is a family occasion and there are many other ways to protest other than upsetting the people who DO want to be part of the day.

Greentree1 · 06/05/2023 09:43

Might be for their own safety, a lot of Royal supporters out today, the protesters would be well outnumbered and if they were causing disruption they might get injured. People don't like their great day out ruined by a few nuts with nothing better to do.

rattymol · 06/05/2023 09:43

And the arrests are being widely reported abroad. Not a good look for the UK.

Arrested for your own safety?
That's a good excuse to stop any protest, isn't it.

People have been arrested who have only ever been peaceful.

MyUsernameIsBetterThanYours · 06/05/2023 09:44

Well this thread certainly explains why we're in the position we're in.

People don't understand what peaceful protest is.

They don't understand what a 'right' is.

They don't understand why these things are important.

These arrests are extremely Minority Report. No crime has been committed. No law has been broken. And yet people have been arrested, and the comments on here are terrifying in their sheep-like obedience.

calimali · 06/05/2023 09:46

If you saw pictures of this happening in Russia would you think it was ok then?

The whole point of protesting is to get your message out there. What on earth would be the point of protesting on another day or in a place far away from the event?

I am not anti royal, but I am appalled at the money being spent on this at a time when so many are suffering from the cost of living crisis. As far as I am concerned those protesting today are representing me and millions of others. They have a right to peaceful protest. They had met with the police beforehand - this is not a last minute hijack of the day. It was planned and agreed upon by the police.

Zebedee55 · 06/05/2023 09:46

Next week, other protestors will be blocking the roads, vandalising stuff, and gluing themselves to things.

The police will stand there, looking gormless, and doing nothing.

Funny how the law works.
