Flaunting bras in summer dresses

PawneGoddess · 03/05/2023 18:13

Is this a current trend? Over the last couple of weeks, I've seen dozens of women wearing dresses that show their bras. Not just straps but strapless or low-backed dresses with a giant M&S boulder holder with the straps, top of the front, and most of the back showing. Back in my day, I never saw anyone dressing like that. Has this become the new standard, or am I simply experiencing an odd fashion phenomenon?

In high school we used to “lose “ the top two buttons off our blouses. We learned to flaunt early.

Offensiveapprently · 04/05/2023 06:20

I've given up with bras, too uncomfortable for me but wear stretchy crop top ones which support well. I wear them with whatever I'm wearing .

I agree with OP. If you're going to wear a backless dress, wear a backless bra with it, or no bra. A pretty summer dress with a wodge of old, grey nylon webbing across the back ruins the whole thing. It's not about being horrified by women's underwear, it's about having an otherwise lovely outfit ruined by what looks like a thoughtless mistake.

Or
It's about letting people wear what they feel comfortable in and not judging them

Hubblebubble · 04/05/2023 13:51

I don't judge people for dressing this way, but I wish designers factored in women's bodies when designing dresses. Most of us need to wear bras and want our underwear covered.

I’ve long stopped caring about theses things if my bra is comfy and my dress is and I like both that’s all that matters. My kid can go to a library with a bloke dancing in stockings and suspenders and it’s applauded so like fuck do I care if a bit of lace shoes above the top of my dress

I like merengue. I like cheese. I wouldn’t put them together

Well I’m vegan as I love animals so wouldn’t eat either, guess we all have different standards and priorities 😀

FangsForTheMemory · 04/05/2023 14:23

I think it’s naff but so long as nobody expects me to show off my bra, I don’t care.

We flaunted our bras in the 90s too! Not M&S white ones, proper flaunting ones, colour matched to our strappy tops with diamanté straps, designed to flaunt to our hearts content. And don't get me started on the flaunting we did with our thongs!

sigh I still have some of those wee thongs with diamante in my drawer from my younger halcyon days. They'd be lost in flesh now but I can't bear to part with them.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 04/05/2023 15:01

I can guarantee you'd rather see some of my bra than me going braless! Especially as 'over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder' bras are mandatory for me...or maybe I should just melt in the sunshine in fear of offending someone's sensibilities at my bra being slightly visible because I'm wearing a summer dress.

Frankly, the state on people's feet who dare to wear sandals is a far bigger disgrace than bra flaunting.

OP you'd pitch a fit if you saw how many women give zero fucks about running in just their sports bra and shorts or with an oversized vest that reveals almost all the sports bra in the summer!

inamarina · 04/05/2023 15:04

mumda · 03/05/2023 19:09

You are somewhere warmer than here
Still best weather.

That was my first thought too! People only just started removing scarves where I live, no bra flaunting to be seen so far 😃
Seriously though, it doesn’t bother me at all if some woman’s bra is peeking out. With some dresses/ tops it can look quite nice actually, so why not?

Stravaig · 04/05/2023 15:19

This would make a good thread! There's a huge difference between what I thought was expected etiquette and what people actually do these days.

Xrays · 04/05/2023 15:29

I’ve got massive boobs, I need a bra with the strength of super secure scaffolding to be comfortable if I’m doing a lot of activity / walking etc - a strapless bra or anything “pretty” isn’t going to be comfortable for me. I do try and vaguely match my bras to my dresses / vest tops - so I’ll wear something bright and matchy, but I’m not going to worry about straps showing. It’s either that or freeboobing. Anything else is just too uncomfortable and being large of boob is uncomfortable enough.

Before we start pulling people apart for having less than perfect feet let’s try and remember that a lot of people can’t actually reach their feet for various reasons - I have lupus and severe joint pain, I just can’t do it. I can’t afford pedicures either or to regularly see someone to make them pretty! I can just about cut my toenails myself but anything else is beyond me. Heaven forbid I might actually want to keep my feet cool in summer …..!!

No-one's pulled anyone apart, and I imagine such a thread would be full of lovely care tips, as well as giving a welcome airing to changing attitudes in society.

Possibly. But you could tell by the quote you quoted in your original reply that people are very quick to judge the “state of peoples feet”.

Well, perhaps. But feet being out in the open air is a good thing, for the feet at least! I like feet, and I hate seeing them unloved, and tortured into unnatural shapes - but it's good overall if problems are more visible.

As you say, some people can't care for them due to mobility problems, through no fault of their own. However there are many more people for whom harmful fashionable shoes, or excess weight, or busy, stressful lives, or general dislike of feet, or lack of knowledge, or xyz all contribute, so there's many interesting and worthwhile conversations to be had.

Though if it's anything like the weight discussion threads, perhaps that's impossible. We seem to be in phase of wanting to letting it all hang out, literally, but without doing anything about what we see. 🤷‍♀️

Find a friend who likes feet! If you were in my vicinity I'd happily offer some care. Although I'm strictly functional: think properly shaped footwear, foot file and heel crack cream; not bizarre nail shapes, sparkly polish or scented lotions 🤣

Same. Might sew a bit of bling to my spanx. Might catch on!

YungDumbThrills · 04/05/2023 18:49

Don't like it? Don't look!
When I have a set of 38GGs, I need a study bra, meaning the straps are thicker. I won't be made to cover myself and over heat just because you don't want to see a piece of clothing that I quite honestly wouldn't be able to go without!

Yes, this

RampantIvy · 05/05/2023 07:56

It's not something I pay attention to. I wouldn't like to have my bra on show, but I don't care what other people do.

I'm still waiting for summer dress weather Sad

Complete honesty, I think all feet are hideous. Seeing sandled feet that don't have even the most basic attention paid to them (like being kept clean) is as jarring to me as seeing a bra is to others.

My post wasn't meant to be offensive. I'm sorry.

MayBeeJuneSoon · 05/05/2023 19:29

No bras or feet on show where I work

I literally will be policing it daily! Not decent enough, but then again we are v strict with a dress code

Seeing the fashionable crochet see through tops everywhere atm. They will be a no!

Mummy2mybear · 05/05/2023 19:30

Honestly I dont like to judge what other's wear, if they feel comfortable in what they are wearing then good on them as long as things aren't completely hanging out then I dont see the issue. In the summer people walk round in bikini tops and hotpants. Maybe someone will start a thread about that too 😂

mondaytosunday · 05/05/2023 19:32

Showing straps seems to have been a thing for years and I don't get it. Ruins the look. As for the back, they may just not be aware their top is cut so low to leave it exposed, and I guess some don't care.
