To think if you don't like my dogs barking at you get the hell off my drive

I'll start this by saying I am tired and miserable so am in no mood to be reasonable today AT ALL.

I have many dogs. Large dogs. There are dog flaps so they can run in and out as they wish onto the property. I am rural and one of the purposes of the dogs is to alert me to people around, so I aren't bothered by them barking if someone comes to the gate.

The gateway to my drive is set back about 15ft so that I can park the car without having to open the gates and drive in. Its clearly my driveway and separate from the road.

There is this one cyclist who every single time after cycling up the hill stops and pulls into the drive and has a rest. Now he could stop on the other side of the road where there is a public track, or he could cycle for like another 30ft and stop at the entrance to the forest but no he chills in the drive. Every. Single. Time.

The dogs bark at him. He shouts at them to be quite. They obviously ignore him. I used to shout them back in but the last few weeks I haven't bothered because well I'm grumpy.

Today my mum has arrived to visit and the cyclist is yet again in the drive. He's had a bit of a go at her. She's come in mithering at me so I've gone out and told him very rudely that if he doesn't like them barking at him to stop standing on the fucking drive. It got into a bit of a heated discussion before I stormed off. He's going to report me apparently as they are intimidating and its illegal to have a camera and no signs and blah blah blah.

So whilst I might BU to have gone out and created more drama instead of ignoring him AIBU to think if you don't want to be barked at get the fuck off my land?

Does he always stop around the same time of day? I'd be very tempted to block the driveway with massive dog statues and a sign that says "Fuck off my private property shouty cycling man" And perhaps a motion activated sprinkler or two.

PLEASE do this!!

Now THIS is a post with a proper sense of priorities 😀

I just want @Qantaqa to do an AMA post. I have so many questions!

I only have one dog and one cat and I love it when they lay on me. I'm dreaming now of living in a pack.

Thinkingpod · 01/05/2023 22:48

Yapping vile dogs are not fun. Train the muts.

They are trained. As guard dogs. The cyclist is trespassing, knows he's at fault - but continues to irritate/wind the dogs up... and then verbally assault a lone woman whom he presumes to be their owner when she's out of reach of their protection... and because he can.

He's using your drive as a cooling down spot, is he, @Qantaqa ? Motion detector sprinklers. He'll get the hint after a few drenchings...

contrary13 · 01/05/2023 23:04

Sorry, that ought to read "because he thinks he can".

He can't. It's actually more intimidating than a barking GSD pack behind gates they can't get through, and he knows this full well, I'm willing to bet!

You do need a guard dog(s) sign up on the entrance he's coming through, though, just to cover yourself legally if he tries claiming anything to the police. Also perhaps a diary of how frequently he's using private property as back-up...

Casilero · 01/05/2023 23:07

Qantaqa · 01/05/2023 15:40

And apologises for only showing half the dog squad I could only upload 5 photos. The remaining fools are attached

So. You have 10 dogs?

PLEASE will you do an AMA as I have so many questions. I'm sure lots of other posters do too.

The most dogs I've ever had was growing up when we had 2. And some cats. You've got a whole pack!

How do you fit in as leader? Where do they sleep? How do you all fit in together? How do the individual personalities fit in? What's it like having a pack basically? I'm so interested. Please share 🙏

GS do not yap

sparkiesparkle · 01/05/2023 23:33

What a knob. I'd have the dogs it every day at the time he comes past. Fantastic squad you have. I have a smaller one of two GSDs, they bark in chorus.

Thirdsummerofourdiscontent · 02/05/2023 03:19

Theluggage15 · 01/05/2023 09:48

If the police took any interest, which I doubt, it would be to tell him to stop standing on your property. Noisy dogs are a good deterrent to thieves.

I would be out there telling him to get off my drive you fucking twat.

margarine17 · 02/05/2023 04:14

Oh love your doggies OP. Sadly we lost our GSD but have since got a Dutch Shepherd. So smart!! Our pack is now 4. They all sleep in our bedroom ( it's ridiculous) . Do yours sleep outside?
With regard to cyclist tosser I'd go with the sprinkler.

To think if you don't like my dogs barking at you get the hell off my drive
wizzyderbyshire · 02/05/2023 04:28

littleripper · 01/05/2023 09:43

He's an entitled twat that won't be reporting you anywhere. I got a lecture about my sheep being out on my private lane and apparently in a cyclists way yesterday. What teh fuck is the matter with them?

I’m a cyclist, I’d be bloody delighted if there were sheep in my way - I love sheep. (And some cyclists are really ignorant arseholes!)

Sage71 · 02/05/2023 06:08

If it is your land and he does not have permission surely he is trespassing so I would put a big sign up saying trespassers will be prosecuted.

ForTheSakeOfThePenguin · 02/05/2023 06:39

ButterCrackers · 01/05/2023 10:43

Call the police and report his agression to your mum. Tell the police that he knowingly trespasses and shouts at your mum and shouts because your dogs bark at him standing on your property. See what the police can do about his threatening antisocial behaviour.

This. Unless you just want to vent.

K9addict · 02/05/2023 06:45

Don’t put up any signs regarding your dogs.it will be judged in a court of law that you had prior knowledge of their aggressive tendencies and won’t go in your favour! Never put these signs up.

BreatheAndFocus · 02/05/2023 06:57

Does he genuinely realise it’s your drive or is he just a bit thick? We had people park in our drive once (similar to yours but much shorter, with a set back gate). They were rude, aggressive twats too but I also think they didn’t get it was part of our property. So, why not put a sign saying Private Land No Parking or Stopping, or similar? That way he’ll either realise or he won’t be able to plead ignorance.

What a miserable thread this is!

Seconding request for an AMA on having 10 dogs

Doone21 · 02/05/2023 07:20

Bloody cyclists think they can lord it over everyone not just road users.
No there's no law to have notices about cameras on your land, no there's no law preventing use of cameras on your land unless they're pointing in windows of neighbours, no there's no law saying your dogs can't be intimidating and noisy unless there's a constant noise disturbance to neighbours. He has no rights to complain or use your driveway. I'd get some more cameras in case he tries anything like letting your dogs out. Make them obvious so he feels uncomfortable stopping there. Set up a sprinkler system right next to gate if he doesn't get the message.
And report him to the police for threatening your visitors.

What a miserable thread this is!

Not sure what you mean

Mainlinethehappy · 02/05/2023 07:24

Has anyone else enjoyed looking up up what “mithering” means before making a silent oath to start using it daily?

GP75 · 02/05/2023 07:49

I rarely come down on the side of noisy dog owners as they're usually very entitled but with you all the way on this one. It's your land and if he doesn't like it he can do one, he's the one making drama when he could just stop elsewhere 🤷

Dibbydoos · 02/05/2023 07:53

Privilege shows its ugly head again.

Cyclist is OOO. A householder can have cameras without signs.

Put up a sign on you driveway saying private property, stay off.

Well done for not letting this AH shout at your dogs.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 02/05/2023 07:59

Redebs · 02/05/2023 06:58

What a miserable thread this is!

Why do you think that?

It has an admirable collection of doggies, and elderly lady in peril and a
twat entitled cyclist.

It's shown that MN priorities are just right.

User6589310 · 02/05/2023 08:06

its illegal to have a camera and no signs and blah blah blah.

This is true@Qantaqa

You are not supposed to have CCTV pointing onto the highway as it's contravening data protection UNLESS you have a sign saying there is a camera. And you'd need a reason why the camera was there on a domestic property pointing to the road.

User6589310 · 02/05/2023 08:07

@Dibbydoos If someone has a camera that is scanning the public highway there has to be a sign. Data protection for people caught on camera.
You can also request that any films of you are destroyed.

Messyhair321 · 02/05/2023 08:11

If it's obviously your drive & you are sure that this cyclist is aware of this then yanbu - cameras I'm not sure of if they're on public areas, & capturing public then these should be moved because that's not legal.
If dogs are on your land then there's nothing you're doing that is illegal however shouting at your dogs will not keep them quiet, so you should probably stop trying to control them like that, they just will think you're joining in. And I would be upset if some stranger was shouting at my dogs. That's wouldn't go down well with me at all.
