To not understand how the UK can afford to pay £250 million for the coronation?

When there are people reliant on food banks to survive and we are told that there is no money to pay for nurses and teachers pay rises?

Whatever your thoughts are on having a monarchy, having a coronation is unnecessary and was abandoned by other monarchies years ago. If he really wants one, can’t he pay for it himself, given that he has billions of pounds?

The royal family more than pay for themselves and do a great service to the country. I think this thread is a bit petty. £250 million isn't that much in the scheme of government spending. We spend way more on other things.

The French royal family earns FAR more in revenue and tourism than ours does.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/04/2023 10:19

Does the £100 million/ £250 million/ any other random number include the amount of money lost by another Bank Holiday ?

electriclight · 30/04/2023 10:20

Retail and hospitality benefited from a spending boost during jubilee weekend last year of about £100m so presumably they can expect similar.

Havanananana · 30/04/2023 10:20

"And people keep voting for it!"

Yet again it is important to point out that only 29% of the electorate voted for the Conservatives at the last general election - and of those who actually voted, the vast majority did not vote Conservative.

But due to the UK electoral system this is sufficient for the Conservatives to have had a 80-seat majority in Parliament and for them to falsely claim that they are carrying out "the will of the people".

While you can't fool all of the people all of the time, under FPTP it is only necessary to fool around 30% of the people all of the time (or even just once every 5 years) in order to have control of the UK. The Conservatives know this and they relentlessly target their loyal 30%, playing on their fears, prejudices and ignorance.

It is estimated that smoking costs the NHS £2.6bn annually. Drinking £1.7bn. Obesity costs the NHS £6bn annually.

If we want to free up more money for doctors and nurses payrises, I'm not sure £250m on the coronation is where we should start looking.

Smoking duties contribute over 10 billion and alcohol over 13 billion.

LakieLady · 30/04/2023 10:13

That's a very good point.

Far better to abolish the monarchy completely and nationalise all the estates, art, jewels etc that were gifts to the monarch because they were the monarch, rather than to RF members personally.

Then all that income could be used to fund our public services. I wouldn't even mind if they sold off some of the art, I believe they have something like 50 Canalettos, and we already have a fair few in national collections.

I am not sure tbh. Looking at how gov looks after things... It would all be sold of or let to rot😳

electriclight · 30/04/2023 10:22

Worldwide tv rights more than cover the cost.

If he'd paid for it himself and profited from the tv rights would that be more palatable?

If you think that this amount wouldn’t have been spent if there was a labour government in lower than quite frankly you are deluded.

Of course it would. But hopefully they wouldn’t have run the country for the benefit of the rich in quite the same fuck you way the Tories have

They don’t have a royal family. Only a few pretenders.

Good point - probably not as each one costs 2 billion

Mischance · 30/04/2023 10:23

Most commentators think that the income to the economy generated from tourism and plastic coronation tat will offset the cost.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 30/04/2023 10:25

Ostryga · 30/04/2023 10:14

Who on earth is going to watch old sausage fingers have a crown stuck on his head and thinks “wow the U.K. is so aspirational we must holiday there immediately!”

You clearly don't see the tourism that is being generated from this. Just because you're miserable about the coronation, doesn't mean everyone is.

Fansandblankets · 30/04/2023 10:25

There won’t be actual figures yet obviously but going by other ritual events then yes it will generate more than it costs. The jubilee for example.

The Impact of the Jubilee Weekend on the EconomyAlthough the total bill for the celebrations would hardly be noticed on the public balance sheet, the cost of the entire country not working for an extra day was more noticeable.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport published an impact assessment that indicated the additional Jubilee bank holiday would cost the economy around £2.39bn.
Although this may seem like a significant dent in the economy, fortunately, the jubilee also boosted it.
The economy was estimated to have had a £6.37billion boost from jubilee spending and tourism, with over one fifth of the British population planning to attend street parties, thousands of tourists travelling to the UK for the event and retailers selling out of jubilee themed decorations, clothes and food.

Nolosomi · 30/04/2023 10:01

@TooOldForThisNonsense are they teleporting there?

They’ll be in some sort of carriage. They won’t get wet. It’s hardly like rain is an unusual phenomenon in the U.K.

what a stupid thing to say, as if rain will make a jot of difference to any of it.

Mischance · 30/04/2023 10:27

Their carriage has been overhauled with better suspension and comfort - they'll only be in it a few minutes!!

finallygotospeaktoSky · 30/04/2023 10:28

Allegiance pledge can fuck right off.

Rosula · 30/04/2023 10:28

It's virtually all coming back into the economy, given that much of it is stuff like overtime for police and the armed forces, so given that and the boost to tourism and the sale of TV rights I'm fine with it.

Sunflowers80 · 30/04/2023 10:29

Fansandblankets · 30/04/2023 09:15

Well it’s closer to £100 million and the revenue it will generate will far outweigh what it costs.

Never learn. Such ignorance in one sentence.

Mafelicent · 30/04/2023 10:29

500,000 teachers in the UK, 70

Kvetching · 30/04/2023 10:29

Charles would have been wiser to forgo a coronation altogether. He wants to be seen as progressive and doesn’t actually need to coronation ceremony as he became king when his mother died.

In rl, I don’t know a single person who is interested in this coronation. They’re either anti-monarchy or ambivalent.

Professor Whitelock puts it perfectly - ‘the idea that one man, who by accident of birth, is being anointed and set above the rest of us; who is unelected, and doesn't represent Britain religiously or ethnically, jars badly.’

500,000 teachers in the UK, 700,000 nurses, 250,000 doctors. Split the 100 million between them and they can have £69 each. Cost of living crisis solved!

Emotionalstorm · 30/04/2023 10:33

I think it's nice that Britain finally has something to celebrate about considering it's been nothing but doom and gloom.

FeltedDogs · 30/04/2023 10:33

Most of the money will go to "ordinary" people though. The "costs" are, for example, security. Security is people. Or set up, all the people involved in putting up barriers, stage set ups, cleaning up afterwards. There will be thousands and thousands of people being paid to do something. It's not money down the drain.

Exactly this! The bulk of it will be overtime for police officers & security staff so money in the pocket of ordinary people.

I don't understand why people get so angry about it!
