According to BBC news: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65435426

There are hopes that people will say out loud: "I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God."

The Archbishop of Canterbury will then proclaim "God save the King", with all asked to respond: "God save King Charles. Long live King Charles. May the King live forever."

This is surely madness. Asking everyone in the Abbey - sure. People crowding nearby might be swayed to say "Hail the King" or something similarly short. But hoping for video footage of crowds in parks and pubs shouting a great long sentence that most don't fully buy into, then doing it again and with "live forever"! Does Charles really think he's liked that much? Is he? It doesn't seem very British at all, and seems destined to be a mess of people saying random stuff loudly.

The new photos were taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace

Coronation: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

The pledge is among several changes to the service, which will incorporate female clergy and other faiths.

AuntieMarys · 30/04/2023 06:47

My thoughts exactly. I'm not a medieval peasant

Plus one. "true allegiance" like we'll fight for him and his successors for ever more? Just weird.

It's such an odd thing a good majority of the British public will bow to a man who just happened to fall out of the right vagina at the right time.

Get rid of 'em.

If ever there was a need for a "like" button, this would be the perfect place for it.

sleeplessinsouthhampton · 30/04/2023 09:53

I can't believe this isn't a spoof

charles is more of a arse than I thought he was if he wants to 'invite' us to say that

i don't care that is is optional to say it - it shouldn't even have been introduced as an option in a modern society

the fact that this has been newly introduced and not some archaic tradition like a lot of the crap with the monarchy is revolting

the nation aren't here to solve his mummy issues

Kendodd · 30/04/2023 09:55

This whole thing is an absolute gift for parody.

Has the Stone of Destiny got it's own Twitter page yet?

Ambertonix · 30/04/2023 09:55

What a narcissistic little man he really is. I snorted my coffee when i read that this morning. I can imagine a few pathetic sycophants willing to do it. I wonder if we will all get reminder notes from the housing estate 'hitlers' to remind us like we did re the Nhs clapping!!

Daffodilsandtuplips · 30/04/2023 09:56

I’ll be watching on the telly but won’t be swearing any oath.I might issue a few swear words though

@Boughtitdownthemarket

There is a pressure group called Republic which campaigns, (peacefully and eloquently), for the abolition of the Monarchy.
They are not a political party and have no power.
Other than that I don't know of any other mechanism for people to have their say as to whether they want a Royal Family, other than polls which are conducted now and then.

I think that over time, the numbers of those supporting the monarchy will dwindle, as the monarchy is far less popular among younger people and the older generations* who are more pro-monarchy die off.

Hopefully, that will be accompanied by increased support for Republic and for an elected head of state. Maybe there will be pressure for a referendum on the matter.

*I'm 67, so I'm actually talking about my own generation here, but I've been opposed to the monarchy ever since I found out that you only got to be Queen if your father was a king and you had no brothers. Up till then, I had some sort of notion that it was a kind of job you could apply for.

SquarePegInRoundHole · 30/04/2023 09:56

As I saw on Twitter this morning, I'd rather gargle diarrhoea.

Iltakethat · 30/04/2023 09:46

Bloody hell, that's bonkers isn't it?

And the way the Princess really aggressively comes back to the UK reporters to hammer the point home! No interview in 40 years? Wtf?

I must say I didn't even realise Thailand had a King - he definitely needs to be locked in whatever their equivalent of the tower is!

It's a very, very serious offence to criticise them in any way you can go to prison for a long time.

lovescats3 · 30/04/2023 10:02

He needs to realise he is on shaky ground given he is not as popular as his mother was.the younger generations do not give a shit about the royals , it is an anachronism

Emotionalstorm · 30/04/2023 10:03

I like having a royal family but I think I'm in the minority. I think they pay for themselves and more and represent good value.

mummymeister · 30/04/2023 10:08

....and all those like me who do not believe in the monarchy at the very same time can shout very loudly "not in my name, not in my name" that would make a bit of a statement wouldnt it. though of course the tv will edit this out just like they edited out all the people in the crowd when he got married who turned their backs to him and his new wife.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 30/04/2023 10:10

I’d rather dry-thumb beechnuts into my balloon-knot than “swear allegiance” to this freakshow circus.

What next, a “special salute” ?

Jumbojade · 30/04/2023 10:10

TooMuchStuffArghhh · 30/04/2023 06:43

Fuck that, pile of shite.

Agree.

“May the King live forever”
Who the f@@k thought that crap up? Is Charles so deluded that he honestly thinks the people love him that much? The majority don’t!

SquirrellyTheSquirrel · 30/04/2023 10:15

As an outsider looking in (mainly through the lens of MN and BBC News), I think the whole thing is insane.

I know the North Korea comparison has been done to death but it was the first thing I was thought of.

Hayliebells · 30/04/2023 10:15

But do you believe King Charles was anointed by God @Emotionalstorm ? Because it's one thing to be in favour of the monarchy (I personally am not but I can see how others might be), but it's a whole other thing to proclaim allegiance to someone in this way. Surely you'd only do this if you did actually think he was anointed by God? And even if you believe in God, surely the idea that our monarch has been anointed by God is a bridge to far? The idea is ludicrous, it's the sort of thing mad dictators insist on. It's crazy that King Charles, and the rest of his advisors etc, think that the optics of this are good in 2023.

Forfrigz · 30/04/2023 10:18

I think it takes something like this for a lot of people to realise how absurd the monarchy is, if you won't say it then why are you happy to pay tax to support their pampered lives? Put your money where your mouth is, as the saying goes.

Willmafrockfit · 30/04/2023 10:19

i doubt the younger generation really cared about the royals when the queen was crowned
not as much as their parents who went out to buy tv's. 17 to a tv, shared with the neighbours.

WilsonMilson · 30/04/2023 10:19

I’m not a republican by any means, but my support for the monarchy has waned considerably since the Queen died. Charles comes over a well meaning but weak, there’s no chance most of this country would swear allegiance to anyone in a position of authority these days, especially since the shit show of the last 3 years.

SquarePegInRoundHole · 30/04/2023 10:21

Emotionalstorm · 30/04/2023 10:03

I like having a royal family but I think I'm in the minority. I think they pay for themselves and more and represent good value.

Do they though? £150 million apparently for the coronation but we're being told lots of tourists are coming to London to spend money in shops and hotels. Lucky London. We all pay for the royal family but the tourist pound stays in London.

finallygotospeaktoSky · 30/04/2023 10:22

Pledges? The only one I've ever made was to 'love and honour' my husband. Royalty can jog right on with that!

vera99 · 30/04/2023 10:24

Is his laundered ex-mistress included in this fawn-fest allegiance as well or is it just the adulterer ?

One bible lesson for the Archbishop to consider for this religious service.

Proverbs 5:18-23
18 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19 A loving doe, a graceful deer— may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love.
20 Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife? Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?
21 For your ways are in full view of the LORD, and he examines all your paths.
22 The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them; the cords of their sins hold them fast.
23 For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their own great folly.

fiftiesmum · 30/04/2023 10:27

I shall be enjoying my extra day bank holiday on Monday and will probably watch the show on TV on Saturday morning (any excuse to delay the ironing and house cleaning).
I do think of the alternative (Trump, Putin etc)

vera99 · 30/04/2023 10:31

We should incorporate it could be much worse into the allegiance

The order of service will read: "All who so desire, in the Abbey, and elsewhere, say together:
"All: I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God and lest we forget it could be much worse."
There will then be a fanfare, after which Mr Welby will say: "God Save The King", with all asked to respond: "God Save King Charles. Long Live King Charles. May The King live forever and save us from Presidential charlatans and despots. "
