According to BBC news: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65435426

There are hopes that people will say out loud: "I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God."

The Archbishop of Canterbury will then proclaim "God save the King", with all asked to respond: "God save King Charles. Long live King Charles. May the King live forever."

This is surely madness. Asking everyone in the Abbey - sure. People crowding nearby might be swayed to say "Hail the King" or something similarly short. But hoping for video footage of crowds in parks and pubs shouting a great long sentence that most don't fully buy into, then doing it again and with "live forever"! Does Charles really think he's liked that much? Is he? It doesn't seem very British at all, and seems destined to be a mess of people saying random stuff loudly.

The new photos were taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace

Coronation: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

The pledge is among several changes to the service, which will incorporate female clergy and other faiths.

i want someone to shout "being lobbed a scimitar by some watery bint is no system of government" (or whatever the actual quote is) at the appropriate moment

LlynTegid · 30/04/2023 10:33

People on the Mall and Whitehall will join in, some will join in from home, most won't.

Your choice.

Blossomtoes · 30/04/2023 10:36

Jumbojade · 30/04/2023 10:10

Agree.

“May the King live forever”
Who the f@@k thought that crap up? Is Charles so deluded that he honestly thinks the people love him that much? The majority don’t!

It’s been part of coronation ceremonies for over 1,000 years so whoever thought it up has disappeared in the mists of time. It’s not about loving Charles, it’s about the tradition of our country. Which is nothing like North Korea so the oath of allegiance is an invitation, not a requirement.

I can’t believe people get so wound up about something they can choose to just ignore.

It's a very, very serious offence to criticise them in any way you can go to prison for a long time.

It's not just them, if you're somewhat friends with Thai royalty then you can get away with anything. "Friends" of the royals can also ruin your life and have you jailed for life for any perceived slight.

Treaclemine · 30/04/2023 10:43

Just what does allegiance entail? And does it just apply to him or to his will expressed through Parliament? And as for his heirs according to law, stuff that for a game of soldiers. I bind myself to nothing like that. Always reserve myself the right to not do what ordered to do. According to Nuremburg.
What turned me was the opening of the QE2 bridge. We had a party of children go to it (I negotiated for a badly behaved boy to go because he really wanted to). And when we got there it was obvious the arrangement was to hide some construction mess, and when she came past she didn't even look at us or wave. We were just window dressing. They didn't give us flags or any souvenirs (that's the company, not her). Just used. And not acknowledged.
To be fair, he will have just sworn allegiance to us, but he has prepared all of his life to do so. Dumping it on us at the last minute though, too much.

Hayliebells · 30/04/2023 10:15

But do you believe King Charles was anointed by God @Emotionalstorm ? Because it's one thing to be in favour of the monarchy (I personally am not but I can see how others might be), but it's a whole other thing to proclaim allegiance to someone in this way. Surely you'd only do this if you did actually think he was anointed by God? And even if you believe in God, surely the idea that our monarch has been anointed by God is a bridge to far? The idea is ludicrous, it's the sort of thing mad dictators insist on. It's crazy that King Charles, and the rest of his advisors etc, think that the optics of this are good in 2023.

No I don't. I don't intend to pledge allegiance but I am still for having a royal family and an excuse to celebrate.

ClaraThePigeon · 30/04/2023 10:45

I do think of the alternative (Trump, Putin etc)

Why on earth do you think that a Putin type figure is the only alternative? You do realise that there are other democratic countries that manage without a Monarch?

And numerous democratic countries that still have one.

Yes, unfortunately some, like the U.K, are still very much stuck in the past. Though thankfully at least some treat their Monarch as more of a human being than some unquestionable deity and have rather less forelock tugging.

Norriscolesbag · 30/04/2023 08:49

Hahahaha can you imagine anyone repeating this in their front room at home 🤣🤣🤣

I think my friend might
She puts her hand over her heart to sing the nstional anthem and has royal gnomes in the garden.

lovescats3 · 30/04/2023 09:50

More crap.lets hang out the bunting and pretend everything is wonderful while the country's going down the toilet.total waste of money too when nurses, teachers etc need pay rises

People have always felt that the country is going down the toilet. There has never been a time where people haven't been whining about that. Things are not actually that bad. If anything this should be a welcome diversion.

EustaceTheMonk · 30/04/2023 10:51

My only objection is that it gives republicans (a tiresome breed IMO) something else to bang on about (looking at you Guardian). Who cares what you do or do not say in your own house? I certainly don't.

ShandaLear · 30/04/2023 10:53

Why would I swear allegiance to that twat?

Ever seen anyone tug their forelock? Because I haven’t. There’s not much cap doffing going down either anywhere except MN.

Yes terribly tiresome to not want to promote a sycophantic, unjust system that's not only built on a bed of inequality but actively perpetuates and promotes it.

We're spending 250 million on this for one day of telling the plebs how amazingly special and superior this particular elderly man supposedly is and that he's been divinely chosen to rule over us. Now they want people sitting at home to pledge their allegiance to him. It doesn't get much more forelock tugging than that.

MammaTo · 30/04/2023 11:00

The thought of it makes me physically cringe. I cannot stand boot licking, cap doffers at the best of times but the thought of them all proudly doing this makes me bork.

Irequireausername · 30/04/2023 11:02

Suppose it's like how the church used to tax, and still taxes people in some countries.

It's like charity but there's no choice.

brianixon · 30/04/2023 11:05

In the act of being made our King he is pledging to serve and protect us in whatever way he can. Dear old bumbling Canterbury is asking us in a less than well explained way to acknowledge this.
The two previous Monarchs worked hard for us, George through WW2 and Queen (Mother).
Q Elisabeth's work is in our recent memories.
Is it a Big Ask that we show some response. Remember that Kings work for us all yes including you republicans.

ilovesooty · 30/04/2023 09:48

Don't be ridiculous. It's well documented that she owned these things, he inherited them and doesn't pay inheritance tax.

Well documented where?

The only place that would actually count for documentation is her will...and that's sealed

Finding it very hard to figure out what hard work and service this man is going to perform once he has his magic hat and how that stands to benefit us.

When were you asked to contribute to the cost? Because I appear to have missed the memo. When this profligate government stops giving taxpayers’ money to its mates I might get exercised about it. This is a real squirrel, while you’re frothing about this God only know what the bunch of tossers running this country is getting away with while your back’s turned.

keffie12 · 30/04/2023 11:18

I won't be doing it. Neither will anyone I know. In fact, I won't be watching it. I only know of one person who will be.

Swear allegiance to another person! It's not a freaking chance. I didn't swear homage, etc, to my ex or my late husband.

If you are a Christian, then the only king will be one of the Christian faiths.

I wish we could have a referendum on the monarchy. The stats are higher for those who aren't interested, won't watch, and those who might watch highlights than those who will watch it all.

Irrelevant today. Unfortunately, I can't see it being disbanded in my lifetime.

The monarchy finished when the Queen passed for me and millions like me, hence why the republican figures have gone through the roof since kadt September

i was in The Netherlands on Thursday, by chance for a gig, and it was King's Day. Everyone wearing orange, having a massive jolly party for his birthday. It's A Thing every year - I'd prefer the NL style monarchy as a step on the way to a republic.

Since we have a PM we don't need a Trump/Putin style president. We can have a poet (Ireland). My suggestions are people like Doreen Lawrence or Tanni Grey Thompson.

milveycrohn · 30/04/2023 11:20

I quite like the RF, but do not plan the watch the coronation on TV, and therefore will not be joining in any allegience type thing.
The concept of a monarchy is outdated, but am OK for the RF and monarchy to continue at the moment. I am happy (for them), that crowds turn out, etc, but have never turned out to see them myself, etc
Generally I think the concept of monarchy will decline, but more gradually over time, and when fewer people turn out to see them.
