According to BBC news: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65435426

There are hopes that people will say out loud: "I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God."

The Archbishop of Canterbury will then proclaim "God save the King", with all asked to respond: "God save King Charles. Long live King Charles. May the King live forever."

This is surely madness. Asking everyone in the Abbey - sure. People crowding nearby might be swayed to say "Hail the King" or something similarly short. But hoping for video footage of crowds in parks and pubs shouting a great long sentence that most don't fully buy into, then doing it again and with "live forever"! Does Charles really think he's liked that much? Is he? It doesn't seem very British at all, and seems destined to be a mess of people saying random stuff loudly.

The new photos were taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace

Coronation: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

The pledge is among several changes to the service, which will incorporate female clergy and other faiths.

When were you asked to contribute to the cost? Because I appear to have missed the memo. When this profligate government stops giving taxpayers’ money to its mates I might get exercised about it. This is a real squirrel, while you’re frothing about this God only know what the bunch of tossers running this country is getting away with while your back’s turned.

I wasn't asked, that's the point. Taxpayers' money is being used for this crap whether I like it or not. Also I can froth about more than one tosser at a time. I'm quite capable of raging at the government while also getting exercised over Charlie and co. Him having a shiny crown and supposedly being chosen by God does not exempt him from criticism, especially considering the laws that he and his family have used their powers to exempt themselves from for their own benefit and to our detriment. I'm amazed that royalists don't seem to give a shit about that but I probably shouldn't be.

FixItDuck · 30/04/2023 11:25

Terrible idea, and I say that’s a someone who has no issue with living in a constitutional monarchy and is quite looking forward to the coronation. I can only imagine that it’s someone’s idea of being “inclusive” but a shame that the bit they decided to try to be inclusive about was this bit of cringeworthy forelock-tugging.

Still giggling at this.

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
There are a lots of jobs in the world that I don't understand what is being done or who benefits from those efforts. However I do not assume that the job is therefore easy.
I do recall that nearly everyone who has written about the Senior Royals (Andrew??) is impressed by their work. I have not heard of playboy lifestyles.

Awkwardsauce · 30/04/2023 11:37

First I've heard of this! Good lord. lol.

My mother will do it I imagine! I can just picture her standing there in her living room parroting the words!

Toddlerteaplease · 30/04/2023 11:39

Oh for goodness sake. It's been done this way for 1000 years. Of course the people in the Abbey will respond. This liturgy is taken from a book in the Abbey archives, that is about 900 years old and specifically states. "This is how kings are to be crowned"

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 30/04/2023 11:45

This seems like a mistake... surely, it is just going to generate an enormous amount of piss-taking. I doubt that's what they were going for....Confused

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 30/04/2023 11:46

I am waiting for a campaign to start up encouraging people to swear allegiance to the republican cause.

It isn't how it has been done previously though. Getting the aristocracy to swear allegiance is one thing... they are all part of the same hereditary system of privilege, after all. Inviting the public to swear allegiance is be, and very misguided imo.

Havanananana · 30/04/2023 11:48

"Since we have a PM we don't need a Trump/Putin style president."

Some other countries have a head of government (equivalent to the PM) and an elected Head of State (similar to a President but without the political power that the US or Russian President has - so more ceremonial and more like the European monarchs).

For example, many people know that Angela Merkel was the German Chancellor (i.e. head of the government) but few will know that the elected Head of State was (and still is) Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Steinmeier will be formally representing Germany at the Coronation (although the Chancellor, Scholz, is also invited).

Toddlerteaplease · 30/04/2023 11:49

@MrsBennetsPoorNerves (love your username) I think If the people invited to the Abbey have an issue with it they wouldn't be there in the first place.

ClaraThePigeon · 30/04/2023 11:51

Of course the people in the Abbey will respond.

They're asking for people at home to pledge allegiance too, not just those in the Abbey.

No chance, why should anyone swear allegiance to someone just because they are over privileged? It is bad enough that it is costing the country £135 million for security & I dread to think how much more when we are in the middle of a cost of living crisis. He should be paying for his own coronation, he can afford it.

Mamaneedsadrink · 30/04/2023 12:13

I heard this and actually "loled". I said to my DH, this is what is that word ... "tone deaf". Yeah no, won't be doing that. Very, very arrogant!

Incorrect - Charles has changed the procedure for this coronation, it is not usually suggested that the public swear allegiance.

This is a new thing.

i have worked for a company with a German "royal" (one of the many - too many, it's a republic) prince was a member of the board.
To be fair, only his assistent put that as his email signature, he didn't. But he and several of his family will be at the coronation too, i expect (distant cousins)

Havanananana · 30/04/2023 12:21

Republic, the anti-monarchist organisation protesting against the coronation:

“Asking people to swear allegiance to Charles and his heirs means swearing allegiance to Andrew. In a democracy it is the head of state who should swear allegiance to us. This is an offensive and tone-deaf gesture that holds the people in contempt.”

Toddlerteaplease · 30/04/2023 12:24

@carriedout so be he won't know if anyone does it, it doesn't matter.

He's shown his true colours Harry was right to get the hell out of there, that and his awful wife being crowned and anointed. I shall be in London trolling around with my partner on the day and if I'm near a screen and that appears I shall not hold back.

No it hasn't actually. At previous coronations the aristocracy would swear allegiance, this is the first time us serfs have been asked to do it.

KingSpaniel · 30/04/2023 12:29

I love the royal apologists trying to pretend it’s always been done this way - it’s new folks! This is who your new king is - what a massive prick. So caught up in his ego that he doesn’t see how embarrassing this is.

Not my king.

vera99 · 30/04/2023 12:35

It's all made up - everything is made up. But then so is country, language, clothes, this website - it's all made up. Only the animals are real !

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 30/04/2023 13:08

Oh I will be swearing all right. I will be swearing at the lying cheating man and his awful wife.
It’s great living in the UK at the moment because headlines will say things like “For the King's coronation he will be using the £350million which you’re paying for btw” and then you’ll go to the shops and can’t afford to buy anything.
My favourite bit so far is that they are only going one mile in the Gold Coach because it’s a bit old and bumpy and doesn’t have air conditioning. Not my king not my queen. I am not a peasant that needs them
