sensory nightmare

just thought this might be an interesting thread!

what is your sensory nightmare?! either NT, ND, ASD, doesn't matter anyone can comment :)

mine is grease- it gives me absolute shudders and I can't eat anything greasy with my hands. I use a spoon or gloves for crisps and the idea of eating a McDonalds/any takeaway with my hands makes me feel physically sick. I can't tolerate skincare products that feel remotely greasy either.

the other thing is the feeling of being in my bed and not having any socks on and my feet sweating on the covers. again, can't explain how sick this makes me feel but it is absolutely awful!

what's your sensory nightmare? :)

Toe posts in flip flops and sandals. Makes me physically flinch and often brings bike up in to my mouth. And the texture of olives and most shellfish & seafood. Vile.

Shefliesonherownwings · 30/04/2023 08:46

Sand is one of mine, particularly on my feet. Actually quite a lot involves my feet, my bedcovers have to be perfectly straight and uncrumpled when I get in. I’ve remade many a hotel bed on holiday as soon as we get in the room.

Also competing noises, usually at a large gathering. So lots of people talking over each other or trying to listen to a conversation whilst the tv is blaring. This is a new one though that’s a symptom of PTSD.

LittleMy77 · 30/04/2023 08:50

Shiny jacket inner lining on bare arms, makes me want to vomit!

MeanderingOnTheNorfolkBroads · 30/04/2023 09:19

Water trickling down my forearms when I wash my face in the sink. Awful.

MeanderingOnTheNorfolkBroads · 30/04/2023 09:22

miniegg3 · 29/04/2023 23:42

Anything that feels dry.. like flour, chalk, wooden cutlery, newspaper cardboard, that disgusting sugar paper stuff you had to use at school, especially if I had short sleeves on and it touched my arm when writing on it 🤢 bare feet on the hard floor when there are tiny gritty crumby bits on it

bare feet on the hard floor when there are tiny gritty crumby bits on it

Oh god, this 🤢 DH spills coffee granules and sugar on a regular basis and it's so triggering!

Blossomandbee · 30/04/2023 09:22

Putting sandy feet into shoes.
Having sticky fingers.
Zips on clothing where it's touching your skin. Not so bad if it's a small concealed zip like on a dress, but when it's somewhere like the back of you neck and it's cold against your skin.
I can bear the sound of coughing or sniffing.

PepsiMaxandPringleStacks · 30/04/2023 09:24

When you wash your hands (or do anything at the sink) when your wearing a house coat and water somehow manages to roll down your sleeve making the whole arm of the house coat (dressing gown) wet and unwearable Sad

PepsiMaxandPringleStacks · 30/04/2023 09:25

Also toothpaste on my hands after brushing my teeth and the sound of my husbands throat clicking when he sleeps on his back

PepsiMaxandPringleStacks · 30/04/2023 09:29

Also walking on the floor in bare feet I have to have slippers on all the time

JorisBonson · 30/04/2023 10:17

Loud TV's. My dad is partially deaf and refused to get hearing aids until recently, so I grew up with the muffled strains of a TV on full blast in my childhood bedroom.

UnctuousUnicorns "Buttons. Horrible, slimy wee things."

Buttons are dry, not slimy.

The feel of hot air coming from the back of a hoover in my legs, I can't stand it! I use Henry hoovers for work and I have to keep turning them so I don't accidentally get it on my legs!

HisOliveTree · 30/04/2023 11:08

I'm another one who hates the feeling of water trickling up my sleeves.

A wet fringe on my forehead, wet hair on the back of my neck.

Soap residue on my hands. Dry hands.

A gentle unexpected touch. DH will suddenly stroke my knee when he's driving. It makes me squirm and I can still feel it minutes later if that makes sense. I've told him to stop now!

Sand anywhere on me or in my clothes or shoes.

The feel of cotton wool, polystyrene or chalk. Plaster dust on my hands.

A duvet that's not perfectly in its cover. If there's a bit of cover with no duvet in it because it's slipped, I have to get out of bed and sort it. Same with wrinkled sheets. I have to have my feet out of the cover, and could never ever sleep with a tucked in duvet or top sheet.

In food - egg white, blancmange and oranges (the membrane and pith) are unbearable in terms of texture. Also two textures together, specifically sponge in trifle or Arctic roll (sponge and ice cream).

The absolute worst sound for me is the noise of a spade scraping against a paving slab. Unbearable.

I'm NT in every other way at far as I know, but am guessing there must definitely be some sensory disorder going on.

I've got an incredibly strong sense of smell, and certain smells make me uncomfortable and nauseated, for example air freshener in cars. Not sure if that is part of the same thing.

PearlOnion · 30/04/2023 11:10

The food that gets trapped after washing up in the little drainer thing in the plug. I can't touch that at all. Makes me feel physically sick and I make Dp do it. Luckily you don't have to touch it so when I was a single parent, I used to pick up the drainer thing and tap it into the bin but if it needed cleaning, I had to hold back the gagging!

Panda89 · 30/04/2023 11:21

Oh yea in terms of food, I don't do 'mushy' food. I can't stand potatoes unless they are super crispy fries, mash or oven chips are the worst.
I don't eat biscuits as I hate the feeling of the mush they leave around your teeth.

FASDE1517 · 30/04/2023 11:39

Seeing someone take their gloves off with their teeth makes me heave.
Chalk. I can't touch it.
The extractor fan - particularly if it's left on after the cooking is done.

TheShellBeach · 30/04/2023 11:43

The sound of fires crackling makes me angry. I really can't bear it.
I mean on the TV when there are bonfires or house fires. It's an awful noise.

zingally · 30/04/2023 11:54

The sensation of brushing velvet the wrong way. Gag.

And those "magic sponges" used for cleaning... My work went through a phase of using them, and sorry, but just the sight of them set my teeth on edge!

Also hate the wooden sticks you get inside ice-lollies and ice-creams. The sensation on my teeth... heave!

Also hate the noise of other people eating. Crisps are the worst, closely followed by slurping on something wet, like an orange.

Giselletheunicorn · 30/04/2023 12:26

Am NT but cannot abide the sound of other people eating. In particularly, wet sloppy sounds and lip smacking.

There was one member of my family who was terrible for this and I couldn't be in the room when she was eating.

Giselletheunicorn · 30/04/2023 12:28

Also can't bear the look of certain fruit stones like peach pits. Find it really distressing to look at them.

AgnesX · 30/04/2023 12:31

My neighbours loud surround sound TV. Seriously, it's not just a peeve, it induces stress out of all proportion to what it should and I get feel physically ill.

Thank god you can't be convicted for thought!

Crikeyalmighty · 30/04/2023 12:46

Someone else mentioned dry window blades against a dry window screen in a car- ooh yes, I actually get hairs on back of my neck at that.

starfish4517 · 30/04/2023 12:50

Water in my eyes, could never learn to swim because of it.

Loud music.

Socks and bra at home.

shivermetimbers77 · 30/04/2023 12:55

Chewing, particularly gum. Arghhh!.. that wet, repetitive masticating sound is the absolute worst.

Also who breathe loudly at the same
time as chewing.

DiscoDragon · 30/04/2023 13:01

Anything slimy or jelly-like in texture or appearance. Slugs and snails make me retch, as does seeing spit on the road or anywhere.

I also gave up meat as it often made me gag when I encountered any difference in texture or bits of unexpected fat or gristle or skin etc.
