sensory nightmare

just thought this might be an interesting thread!

what is your sensory nightmare?! either NT, ND, ASD, doesn't matter anyone can comment :)

mine is grease- it gives me absolute shudders and I can't eat anything greasy with my hands. I use a spoon or gloves for crisps and the idea of eating a McDonalds/any takeaway with my hands makes me feel physically sick. I can't tolerate skincare products that feel remotely greasy either.

the other thing is the feeling of being in my bed and not having any socks on and my feet sweating on the covers. again, can't explain how sick this makes me feel but it is absolutely awful!

what's your sensory nightmare? :)

  1. Really hard to explain this one but when I accidentally scratch a cushion or duvet cover, it freaks me out so much that I have to get up and calm down before getting back into bed. I have jersey bedding for this exact reason.

  2. That short velvety flocking stuff. Like what a Sylvanian family is covered with. Feel sick just thinking about it.

  3. Wet toilet roll

Puddock1 · 30/04/2023 01:20

@NotAnotherBathBomb I was thinking about that episode of Motherland when I went swimming this week! Flashbacks of the plaster attached to foot 😱

The same noise, or phrase repeated again and again. It gives me the rage so quickly.

This, also low level continuous noise like lorry engines idling. We have a railway line at the bottom of our garden and points just a little way down the track so we often get diesel freight type trains sitting with their engines running waiting for the lights to change and I can feel the rumbling in my stomach, I hate it. Trying to speak on the phone when there's background noise (their end or mine) is the other one, it's like my brain can't separate the sounds and it all just merges into an indecipherable mess of noise.

Socks. I cannot stand wearing them. The feeling of all my toes touching each other 🤮

NotMyFinestMoment · 30/04/2023 01:37

Touching very old pages in books where they have turned yellow (they make me cringe whenever I have to touch them). Counting old coins and the smell of the coppers on my hands. Yuck.

Chocolateisnice · 30/04/2023 01:46

Soggy bread🤢🤮

Opaljewel · 30/04/2023 02:16

I'm ND and I can't stand bright lights above me. I hate rough itchy wool and that horrible rough material that some wash bags and sports bags are made of. Can't think of the name. I also can't stand really high pitched noises or alarms. I also find some food texture weird like undeneath of a mushroom cap 🤮🤮🤮 or things like muscles or oysters.

So just basically lots of things. 🤣🤣🤣

Not being able to moisturise my hands immediately after washing and drying them. Dry skin makes me feel really uncomfortable (not physically uncomfortable, emotionally uncomfortable)

Omg I hate my dry skin too especially my hands.

Novynu · 30/04/2023 02:23

Bare wood that is sanded but not varnished. Wooden spoons, some chopping boards, etc

Especially when wet

I think you need to reword the bit about people eating with chopsticks. It's quite offensive as written

HereForItToo · 30/04/2023 02:33

Oh no! I didn't intend for it to sound nasty or offensive in any way, I feel sick with guilt now. How do I edit or delete?? First and last time I ever comment on a post.

NotMeSecretFormular · 30/04/2023 02:34

One wet hand, one dry hand.
Wearing fluffy socks and getting anything stuck to the bottom of them.
Foundation on my fingers.

NotMeSecretFormular · 30/04/2023 02:36

Oh and cotton wool against my teeth at the dentists. I tell them I’m allergic rather than freak out.

Coyoacan · 30/04/2023 02:49

The hum of shopping centres

I didn't think it sounded like you meant it as it sounded if you see what I mean. I think you can ask mn to delete it but not sure how. Think there's a night watch type thing

Wooden cutlery/lolly sticks/wooden rolling pins etc, I just can't.

Also, when there is music on but it's just that bit too quiet to actually hear the song properly. I can't stand it. My DH often has it like this in the car and it actually makes me feel anxious for some reason. I'd rather it was too loud!

Ugh. My DH does this with the radio in the house. It's barely perceptible and I cannot bear it. I have to go and switch it off.
It's worst when there are people talking very quietly.
It makes me furious.

Stephhh87 · 30/04/2023 06:14

Marshmallows … why are they even a thing?!
glitter
tights especially thick ones, they never feel right
chewing

bluebird3 · 30/04/2023 06:21

The worst one is the sound of my mum sneezing. She manages to sneeze at some good awful pitch and every time I want to punch her in the face. But we get on great and I love her very much 😅. This isn't all sneezes - just my mum's.

bluebird3 · 30/04/2023 06:22

Also windshield wipers on a dry windscreen ...shudder

The feel of raw chicken

NotAnotherBathBomb · 30/04/2023 07:27

Chocolateisnice · 30/04/2023 01:46

Soggy bread🤢🤮

Oh you just reminded me of one of my worst sensory issues.

Sandwiches.

I mean the ones made with standard loaf bread like Hovis or whatever, that hasn't been toasted. So any sandwich in your supermarket 'food to go' sections.

I could be starving and won't eat one. There are exceptions, I'll eat anything on 'hard' bread, so ciabatta and baguette are fine. But I've tried, one day I was at a conference and the only food offered was sandwiches. I was so hungry. I nibbled a bit and immediately felt the ugh to heave so I went without. I find the bread so soggy and hate the sensation. Wraps are fine, but I can't do sandwiches.

Lja12 · 30/04/2023 07:34

opening toothbrush packaging and the feel of the ripped cardboard 😫oh and jam/jelly on children’s cuffs!

ChristmasFluff · 30/04/2023 07:45

Corduroy

I can cope if I can see someone is wearing it, or if I know I have to touch it, but if I'm leafing through clothes on a rail and accidentally touch some, I'm almost into a meltdown.

For a laugh, my ex-H used to put his jumbo cord trousers on his arms and chase me!

DilemmaDelilah · 30/04/2023 07:59

Crumbs. I cannot sweep crumbs into my hand to get rid of them. I have a specific (clean) dustpan and brush for the dining table and my DH will usually clean them off the kitchen worktop for me. They make me shudder.
