I'm new to Mumsnet and clearly this is how things are done on here, but does no one else cringe at the ridiculous acronyms people use on here?! Why can't you just say my son, my husband etc.. just something that irks me! 🙃

Just chill FGS. What does it matter, really? <walks away to find out what DH, DS and DDOG are up to>

Tinybrother · 30/04/2023 05:18

Why does everyone always think they were invented by mumsnet? Have you never been on the internet before? They were in widespread use before mumsnet was invented. I don’t use them, and don’t feel the need to make a fuss about it. What a wally to make a whole thread.

GretaGood · 30/04/2023 05:27

I really like the acronyms

I don't think 'everyone' does always think they were invented by mumsnet.

Tinybrother · 30/04/2023 05:32

Everyone who posts threads moaning about the acronyms thinks they were invented by mumsnet.

merrymelodies · 30/04/2023 05:34

Not this again. 🙄

merrymelodies · 30/04/2023 05:37

Actually, have a Biscuit

HTH

CoalCraft · 30/04/2023 05:37

I don't mind them but I think if you're gonna use them, you have to be tolerant of people who use "hubby", "kiddo", etc. "Darling husband" is hardly any less cringe, really.

Marchintospring · 30/04/2023 05:56

Twiglets1 · 29/04/2023 21:17

I hate it.

Especially when women are complaining about their abusive husbands and they STILL call then DH - what's dear about them???

I thought the D for darling was meant sarcastically. I like it’s a reminder that it’s a anonymous forum so people are right when they say it’s not how we speak in real life.

GuessHowMuchItCost · 30/04/2023 05:58

I don’t like them and don’t use them but it doesn’t bother me when others use them except when they are talking about someone else’s husband/children/ mother, etc. I was reading a thread and a poster asked the OP “do you have any dcs?” And it just sounded so weird. If anyone asked me that I would be tempted to reply “no, only awful ones”.

I quite like them, but they are not acronyms and that drives me mad.

Every group has its lingo, i don't mind that, but I've been here for years and i never can remember what odfod stands for.

What does odfod stand for?!

Sandysandwich · 30/04/2023 06:07

I read ds, dd and dh as d'son, d'daughter and d'husband.
Like 'Mrs Browns Boys D'Movie'

SinisterKnitter · 29/04/2023 20:58

I'm a dsheep actually 🐑

I'm going to be a dsheep too 🤣🐑

OK that one is an acronym, it means 'oh do fuck of dear'..

ImustLearn2Cook · 30/04/2023 06:10

@gentlemum Just for you I am going to write my post without acronyms.

I haven’t read the full thread but even though I get where you are coming from I do sometimes find it quicker to use acronyms. I am quite slow at texting.

However, it has crossed my mind why an original poster would refer to their husband as dear or darling husband when their ‘Am I being unreasonable’ post clearly shows that he isn’t a dear or a darling at all. In fact he might be described as a lazy arse, misogynist, abusive prick and still be referred to as dear/darling husband/partner.

ImustLearn2Cook · 30/04/2023 06:14

Post script. Ok the letter d could stand for dickhead in which case I withdraw my previous sentiment that the letter d in front of husband or partner who is not worthy of dear or darling is unsuitable.

CorsicaDreaming · 30/04/2023 06:14

@ShowOfHands - love the autocucumber!

I will be blaming all my typing mishaps on the autocucumber in future 🤣🥒

Stripeybluetop · 30/04/2023 06:17

Those stupid acronyms give me the ick

CorsicaDreaming · 30/04/2023 06:18

MeinKraft · 29/04/2023 21:43

How's this for an acronym: Biscuit

So much antagonism in one biscuit 😄

That's what I was thinking.
Unless this OP has literally been living on an island with Tom Hanks since about 1990, only just been rescued, and the first thing she did was power up her old Omega and register on MN, how are there still people that don't know that SM acronyms exist?

(I will grant that the one that makes me slightly dry heave in its attempt to be PC, all-inclusive and non-"gendering" is the twee "young person" much beloved of WIWIKAU and other university SM platforms. "my YP is doing exams this week" makes them sound like some sort of super intelligent poodle or sex slave that's usually kept in the cellar. )

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 30/04/2023 06:44

Agree - it's just laziness.

PappedOot · 30/04/2023 06:48

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/04/2023 21:55

So, @gentlemum - do you usually arrive in an established group, tell the members you think what they are doing is all wrong, and then insult them by calling them sheep? And do you expect that to be well received?

Exactly this!

It used to be considered good forum/internet “etiquette” to lurk beforehand and get to know the lingo used rather than jumping straight in and moaning about how things are… have a Biscuit OP (I bet you hate those too!) Wink

mainsfed · 30/04/2023 06:50

gentlemum · 29/04/2023 20:46

Oh I definitely won't be using them as I'm not a sheep and don't need to write cringey acronyms because everyone else does! More just saying it's annoying reading posts and having to decipher acronyms and read everyone being called 'dear something..' 🙃

DW, DH, DC etc have been around long before Mumsnet.

Come back when you’ve got thousands of posts under your belt, you’ll find ‘exH has DC EOW but pays no CM’ much quicker to type than ‘ex husband has the children every other weekend but doesn’t pay any child maintenance’.

In fact, I’ll bet you name change after this thread and use the acronyms.

And if you don’t name change, don’t worry, a lot of posters make cringey first posts like yours and get their arse handed to them, you’ll get over it.

God, I hate DS etc but give me that over hubby or kiddo any day.
Or 'littlies'. Someone asked me on a course recently if I had littlies. Urgh, fuck off with that!
