I'm new to Mumsnet and clearly this is how things are done on here, but does no one else cringe at the ridiculous acronyms people use on here?! Why can't you just say my son, my husband etc.. just something that irks me! 🙃

Same!

It can be dear or darling. I always say darling in my head.

UndertheCedartree · 29/04/2023 22:41

Personally I find the acronyms make messages clearer and easier to read. The capitals highlight the 'characters'. Not sure I've explained that well. JMHO

Yfory · 29/04/2023 22:42

gentlemum - you think the acronyms are cringey. I think your choice of mn name is cringey.
We all appreciate different things.
The acronyms have been mn lingo since it started. If you arent keen its as simple as ignoring them or not being on MN. Biscuit

I haven't RTFT (I'm sure the F used to stand for Fucking), so hoping someone has pointed out that (for the most part - ODFOD is debatable) they're not acronyms, but abbreviations.

It does stand for fucking

Danikm151 · 29/04/2023 22:46

I hate the ones that say exDP. He isn’t your dear/darling any more!
just your ex

UndertheCedartree · 29/04/2023 22:46

gentlemum · 29/04/2023 22:10

Don't get what you mean..?

I guess 'gentlemum' is pretty cringey...

But I kind of find adults calling things 'cringey' quite childish, tbh!

I say ex DH because actually we're really good friends and he is very dear to me!

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/04/2023 22:55

I take it some of you don't like DITLOIDs.

3 B M Three Blind Mice
20 V on a D 20 Vertices on a Dodecahedron
24 H in a D 24 Hours in a Day
52 C in a P 52 Cards in a Pack
20000 L U the S Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
1966 E W the W C 1966 England Wins the World Cup
8 P in the S S 8 Planets in the Solar System
26 L of the A 26 Letters of the Alphabet

Surely then it would be DexH.

Because he's still D but not H. IYSWIM.

Oblomov23 · 29/04/2023 22:57

ODFOD.

Good point. Although maybe he's a better ex than an H.

UsingChangeofName · 29/04/2023 23:03

Oh I definitely won't be using them as I'm not a sheep and don't need to write cringey acronyms because everyone else does!

If you don't like acronyms and abbreviations, then presumably you never use
MOT
NHS
OFSTED
Mr
Dr
etc

then ? If you do then YABU and ridiculous to object to them being used on internet forums.
If you are some kind of Jacob Rees Mogg character who chooses to waste your time writing out things in full, that are much easier abbreviated, whilst I think you are odd, I respect your right to waste your time doing so as long as it doesn't hold others up.

ssd · 29/04/2023 23:05

I know, i write dh, dcs, ds etc. But its really a pile of twee shite

pictoosh · 29/04/2023 23:07

So that's us told then.

It does stand for fucking

I think it’s also full, as in ‘I haven’t read through the full thread’

Crimsonripple · 29/04/2023 23:18

I agree. Can never remember what half of them mean. I give up reading the posts!

Tessisme · 29/04/2023 23:21

It's not compulsory to use them. And you do get used to them. I agree with pp's (ahem) that ddog, dcat and dgoldfish are just irritating.

Gymnopedie · 29/04/2023 23:31

so it shouldn't matter to you what I think 😌

DOP (see what I did there?) - it doesn't.

I agree. Irritating, Pathetic. And attention seeking. It feels like an 11 year old is writing it... Dgoldfish and Dcat for fuxake. Hmm

Chocolatelabradorsarethebest · 29/04/2023 20:47

The ‘D’ stands for Dear? I always thought it stood for Darling! I’ve learnt something new tonight!

I always read it as darling but I know most say dear.

MummyNeedsADrinkDear · 30/04/2023 04:31

dudsville · 29/04/2023 20:42

Every group has its lingo, i don't mind that, but I've been here for years and i never can remember what odfod stands for.

Oh Do Fuck Off Dear
ODFOD.

shivawn · 30/04/2023 04:43

I never ever use them, I just type husband, son child or whatever. I agree that they're a bit cringe.

JimmyHalpert · 30/04/2023 05:04

SinisterKnitter · 29/04/2023 20:58

I'm a dsheep actually 🐑

Brilliant 😂

KimberleyClark · 30/04/2023 05:06

Redglitter · 29/04/2023 20:48

The worst are DDog & DCat. But I agree I hate all the D prefixes. Especially when you see DF for example. Is that Father Friend or Fiance

See also DS. Son or Sister? Also GP. I found some posts very confusing when I first joined and wondered why people were complaining about their GP not buying Christmas presents or that their GP had bitten them on the finger.
