I'm new to Mumsnet and clearly this is how things are done on here, but does no one else cringe at the ridiculous acronyms people use on here?! Why can't you just say my son, my husband etc.. just something that irks me! 🙃

DD is quicker to type than “my daughter”. HTH 😬

@gentlemum

Oh I definitely won't be using them as I'm not a sheep and don't need to write cringey acronyms because everyone else does! More just saying it's annoying reading posts and having to decipher acronyms and read everyone being called 'dear something..' 🙃

It's an opinion.. something I find mildly irritating and just don't understand the point of. And by the comments appears I am in no way the only one. As you and other people have commented, I'm new and not part of your established club with, I quote, 'fun rules' (didn't read these rules anywhere..) so it shouldn't matter to you what I think. 😌

YAY, go you. 'high five....' 🙄 You sound rude and insufferable. That's just an opinion, so it shouldn't matter to you what I think!

Keeping with the loose theme of petty niggles can I add...

"You do you"

It makes me physically cringe. I'd take an acronym any day over this. Sorry I digress, but it is the most annoying phrase on the internet.

it is what it is, babe.

Every group has its lingo, i don't mind that, but I've been here for years and i never can remember what odfod stands for.

Oh do fuck off dear 😉

salsmum · 29/04/2023 22:12

I always thought the 'D' stood for dreaded 😳🤣

Brefugee · 29/04/2023 22:12

one of the first places i used to post was full of ex military and radio hams. We used to have whole conversations in Q-code TLAs. It was a long time ago but i still use a few when writing with those friends now.

I've never got what HTH means.

Hope that helps (always used in a sarcastic or humourous way)

ShoesoftheWorld · 29/04/2023 22:27

I haven't RTFT (I'm sure the F used to stand for Fucking), so hoping someone has pointed out that (for the most part - ODFOD is debatable) they're not acronyms, but abbreviations.

I went to Netmums, I didn't like it, so I left. I didn't start a thread there and moan about what I didn't like. Cos that's just rude.

IANAL took me a while.

midsomermurderess · 29/04/2023 22:35

WeAreTheHeroes · 29/04/2023 21:06

They're not acronyms for starters. An acronym is initials that make a word, e.g. NATO, scuba, etc.

Thank you for that. The misuse of ‘acronym’ is a bit of a peeve of mine.
