I'm new to Mumsnet and clearly this is how things are done on here, but does no one else cringe at the ridiculous acronyms people use on here?! Why can't you just say my son, my husband etc.. just something that irks me! 🙃

I actually think using DS, DH etc makes following stories easier in lieu of proper names being used, due to the capitals. It's easier to see the main players and follow along/scan a post briefly when it's easy to pick out who is doing what.

WeAreTheHeroes · 29/04/2023 21:06

They're not acronyms for starters. An acronym is initials that make a word, e.g. NATO, scuba, etc.

WeAreTheHeroes · 29/04/2023 21:06

HTH OP

Neededanewuserhandle · 29/04/2023 21:07

Not this shit again, can't anyone think of anything new to moan about?

Touché. Initialism then 🙂

I hate it.

Especially when women are complaining about their abusive husbands and they STILL call then DH - what's dear about them???

asdfgasdfg · 29/04/2023 21:17

I read GP as doctor, MN uses it for grandparent(s), can be really confusing so I prefer the longhand versions

Cornettoninja · 29/04/2023 21:19

I definitely won't be using them as I'm not a sheep

eh? It’s just language/slang. You’re already a sheep using English to communicate by your logic.

YY to what this PP said. HTH

GoodChat · 29/04/2023 21:21

I give it 6 weeks before you're accidentally typing DS on Facebook and outing yourself Grin

The ‘D’ stands for Dear? I always thought it stood for Darling! I’ve learnt something new tonight!

That’s what I thought too!

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 29/04/2023 21:23

gentlemum · 29/04/2023 20:46

Oh I definitely won't be using them as I'm not a sheep and don't need to write cringey acronyms because everyone else does! More just saying it's annoying reading posts and having to decipher acronyms and read everyone being called 'dear something..' 🙃

well seeing as someone starts a similar thread every other day I'm afraid you can't be accused of being any way original.

Use them, don't use them, no one gives af.

nickelbabe · 29/04/2023 21:24

it's not a MN thing. It's an internet forum thing.
it's as old as internet forums themselves.

Also those who mentioned it: the D stands for either dear or darling, whichever you hear in your head. It means the same thing.

DustyLee123 · 29/04/2023 21:24

Use them, don’t use them, no one cares. Certainly not enough to write a thread about.

Alconleigh · 29/04/2023 21:25

The whole DH thing is knowing / arch, it's not entirely serious. Can people not hear that? Plus as PP said it came out of fairly standard forum abbreviations.

ShowOfHands · 29/04/2023 21:27

Yes yes op, you're very special and radical and what the yoof of today would call sigma. Just like the last person who started this very same thread and the one before that and all the other people on this thread who simply will not conform.

Do it or don't. It's not a MN thing, it's an Internet thing and has been here for a couple of decades now. You get used to it and it signals you're part of the community but it's not compulsory. This is an internet forum, not a dictatorship. Some of it is delightful whimsy or shared history. I'd tell you why but TSSDNCOP.

Simianwalk · 29/04/2023 21:29

It's been going for 20 years not sure it will change now!

RunningRunningRunningRunningRunning · 29/04/2023 21:29

Yeah when people type some long meandering tale out about their husband but accidentally write DS so you read the whole thing thinking it's about someone's son, when it'd be easier just to say who the hell you're on about. Also the random long acronyms that you have no idea what it stands for. I remember when I first started lurking it took me about a month to work out who people were actually on about.

Apparently not. I just choose a different word to fit context, or no word whatsoever. Dingbat, dashing, deleterious, decrepit, delightful. Like I said, whimsy.

Were you taught to infer from context at school? People mistakenly type certain things all the time or autocucumber intervenes. Somehow, we struggle on.

Lasouthpaw · 29/04/2023 21:31

I'm used to it now but still find it vaguely irritating.

I do always think of 'The OP' as just 1 person though. As in, the same person starting every post.

(The one that really gets me is when people use the actual word with a D in front of it. Ddad, Ddog etc. Why bother?! You've typed out the word, why add a D?!)

Comeonbarbiebrianharvey · 29/04/2023 21:31

I quite like CF and LTB, they do make me laugh not sure why. Picked it up quite quickly. No idea what IYSWIM or similar is??!! Hasn't become obvious yet.

Teacakeorcrumpet · 29/04/2023 21:32

FTFOTTFSOF is my favourite MN acronym

Teacakeorcrumpet · 29/04/2023 21:33

IYSWiM = if you see what I mean. That's not mumsnet, been around since early days of internet

Cherrywoo · 29/04/2023 21:33

This is sweet. Reminds me of my early MN days and finding it twee.
Now I don’t give a shit and find some small satisfaction in calling not so D DHs just H.
