Breeder has not giving us her address to view puppy

Safarigiraffe · 29/04/2023 16:10

Hi we were looking for a spaniel breeder and found one not too far from us, price agreed with deposit agreed, breeder had chat on phone with us to find out about us & all was good. Arranged with breeder to visit puppy tomorrow at her house by phone however she said to us she would give us her address but up to now she hasn’t. So AIBU to think that she isn’t going to give us the chance to view the puppy considering we have deposit to pay her? Or are we missing something here that maybe she’s just been busy?

When you say your husband has “trained them up”

what do you mean?

and if your husband has worked with them and “trainee them up”, one would think he has contacts rather than just going with a random breeder neither of you know

Bamboozleme · 29/04/2023 17:00

That is not what I asked

Well we have researched more about the breed online & know about this breed

This breeder hasn’t taken a penny from you

I suspect she’s had second thoughts about giving the puppy to you OP. Simple as that.

KimberleyClark · 29/04/2023 17:03

Don’t ever buy a puppy you haven’t viewed. Ideally you should see the parents too.

Maybe so but not sure why that would be

Still not what she asked! How much research have you done on the Breeder? Not the breed of dog.

Again

i didn’t ask that
i asked about your research of the breeder

WiddlinDiddlin · 29/04/2023 17:04

OP - PP is asking if you have researched this BREEDER, the person producing this particular litter.

Have you, what is their name, what is their kennel affix/kennel name (I don't mean tell us, I mean do you know their name, their kennel affix/name).

Do you know the names of the parents so you can check via the kennel club website the health status of the parents?

If not.. then this is almost certainly NOT a reputable breeder. There is no good reason for you not to know their name and their affix.

She sounds a bit iffy but you don't sound very clued up either.

Bamboozleme · 29/04/2023 17:04

Safarigiraffe · 29/04/2023 17:03

Maybe so but not sure why that would be

Because I suspect she’s an experienced breeder and she is drawing on the experience and has concluded that she doesn’t want the puppy to go to you and your partner based on the interaction she has had with you to date

SnackQueen · 29/04/2023 17:06

You have made contact with a puppy farm intermediary via an online web site that is basically like a virtual pet shop. FFS op.

AgrathaChristie · 29/04/2023 17:08

Google the breeder’s ( the woman’s ) name.
No point in you going if you don’t know where she lives.
Could be fear of theft, could be a scam, could just be a very lax person, could be a puppy farm. Please don’t buy from a puppy farm — if there is ever a suggestion of you meeting in a car park, a public place or if the person won’t let you meet the mum refuse.

CheshireCat1 · 29/04/2023 17:10

Wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole. Have you tried a rescue centre, there are lots of dogs needing homes.

azlazee1 · 29/04/2023 17:10

I think I'd be happy I hadn't paid the deposit yet. Something is off with this.

I have never bought a dog, and have very little interest in doing so, but even then I know an experienced breeder would not be selling on pets4homes, well they might have experience as it done this many times before but won't give a damn where the dog goes as long as they get the money.

Obviously though it is the OP completely at fault and not the actions of what is most likely the owner / cog in the wheel of a puppy farm. 🤦‍♀️

https://www.sesss.org/puppies.html Breed puppy co-ordinator for one of the springer spaniel breed clubs (there are several clubs).

Speak to them about litters, ask if they know of the breeder you were in touch with.

@Safarigiraffe NO REPUTABLE Breeder would EVER ask for a deposit up front before you have met the puppies and most importantly, their Mother.

Reputable ones (who maybe breed one litter every three years to further their own Line) have long waiting lists and puppies booked months in advance.

They don't need to take deposits before you have met the puppies, as good potential owners are prepared to wait for a well ~reared healthy puppy.

It sounds incredibly dodgy.

Go through a Breed Club, and preferably an ''Assured breeder scheme''
Anyone advertising online I'd not touch with a barge pole.

Good quality puppies always have waiting lists.

Thoughtful2355 · 29/04/2023 17:13

I bought a puppy from pets4homes. was a puppy farm. Pup was in bad shape i found out at vets visit. be very careful

hooveringknob · 29/04/2023 17:15

Sounds dodgy as fuck.
You really should have done more research on the breeder and also on what to be wary of when buying a puppy from a breeder. Could be a puppy farm.
Sounds dubious that it was on the pets 4 homes website.
I'm in another country - the genuine breeders have their own websites with contact details and mainly have waiting lists - ie. they don't advertise separately each litter, because they have enough people waiting.
The others advertise on the equivalent of pets 4 homes and gumtree etc. Puppies/kittens are underpriced. You can acquire one just by emailing - the genuine ones will want to interview you by phone or video call before going any further.

If you cannot view the puppies with mum and see where they are being kept at her house then do not put down a deposit. Also do a google image search on any photos she has posted or sent you as sometimes puppy farms can copy genuine adverts previously posted.

What type of spaniel are you looking for? Always aim for kc registered- whilst kc registration does not guarantee mistreatment of mums and puppies, there is a restriction on the number of litters that mum can produce for them to be kc registered thereby reducing the chance it is a puppy farm. You can also trace back the puppies lineage. We even went as far as Facebook stalking the breeder and saw lots of pictures of mum with the family looking very much loved.

Good luck and let us know how it goes (and pictures please!)

Exactly this! Very well said.

Holidayheaven2 · 29/04/2023 17:16

Did she actually ask you about your background re ownership of previous dogs, your lifestyle fitting towards having a dog, your attitude towards training and their behaviour etc?

I have had to go through rigorous screening when applying for a puppy from official registered breeders and this is screaming 🚩 to me.

As others have said, Pets4Homes is a very questionable platform for puppy farms ☹️

oakleaffy · 29/04/2023 17:17

Safarigiraffe · 29/04/2023 17:12

Thank you for this

Breed clubs are definitely the way to go.
The Breeder will be fastidious about the home you can offer a puppy, and rightly so.

So well worth the wait.
I have had rescues as well as a specific breed that is hard to find in Rescue {Luckily for them}
If you get a well reared puppy, well handled from the outset, it will make a world of a difference.

Good luck.

justgettingthroughtheday · 29/04/2023 17:20

I wouldn't read too much into them not giving you the address yet. A friend of mine who breeds working dogs doesn't give the address out. He doesn't want people randomly turning up or even more worrying people attempting to steal dogs. He also lives in the arse end of nowhere and you would never find the place especially if you use a satnav!

That said the does sound something a bit dodgy here. I wouldn't use websites like that to find a puppy. Reputable breeders don't tend to use that site. My friend for example has a website, but also relies mainly on reputation and word or mouth. He also gets potential owners extremely thoroughly.
