Ilovejonahsims · 29/04/2023 07:56

Does anyone else iron all their clothes? Not daft things like socks and knickers but everything else including bedding?

i don’t love doing it but I just can’t bear the look of unironed clothes (especially for DC)

is anyone else like this? am I mad?

Tbh I probably could fit in ironing if I really really wanted. But some people won’t be able to. That’s the point I’m making. It’s that sometimes you just can’t

Yes, you probably could. But you personally prioritise other things, which is obviously fine. So that’s the answer to your much repeated question of how does anyone find time - most people prioritise it. No need for insulting my comprehension and suggesting I won’t be able to be a teacher just because I suggested that you actually could find time to iron, you just don’t think it’s that important. Which is obviously fine.

Seeleyboo · 30/04/2023 20:35

I iron everything. Even dish cloths. But I love ironing.

Enko · 30/04/2023 21:51

cardibach · 30/04/2023 20:09

And yet you are doing the same to me…

Actually, I was telling you "my" view I didn't tell you what " you" ought to do.

Nowhere do I say "you mean" or " you believe," I told you what my view is.

AKA I have an opposing opinion to you but I am not telling you what yours ought to be. so pretty much I did the opposite of what you did.

i find this incomprehensible.
I get some people like ironed clothes for whatever reason and while I maintain that after 10 minutes it makes no difference if people really think it matters I kind of get it.
But ‘love ironing’? Ok, there are pleasant smells associated and maybe a sense of bringing order, but it’s dull and repetitive. It’s not creative at all. Is there really not something you love more that you would rather be doing than ironing a dish cloth? Time for ourselves is so limited…

YouNeverSeeTheRealMe · 01/05/2023 12:48

I iron t-shirts, blouses, trousers and dresses. Not jeans, underwear or bedding.

What is so hard to comprehend? I don't love ironing but ironing dishcloths is a harmless thing to love for those that do. It's not like pulling the wings off butterflies or pissing on people's chips.

I like the look of ironed clothes (I don't care about dishcloths) so I do it. I maintain that after 10 minutes or more my ironed shirt collar will still not be wrinkled because I'm not going to sit on it. But if you really think it matters that you wear wrinkled clothes then of course it makes no difference to me.

I'm sure there are times when you are dull, repetitive and uncreative - and unimaginative too - but I wouldn't feel the need to point that out. Except for just now, But normally I wouldn't say anything.

You’ve written about a whole load of things I didn’t say though.
I said I could understand (but nit share) people’s feelings about having ironed clothes.
It’s the enjoyment I was asking about.

Wannabegreenfingers · 01/05/2023 13:47

I don't iron bedding, underwear or t-towels, but I do iron clothes. They look and fit so much better when not full of creases. 1 adult and two pre teens, takes me 30 mins max per week.

This is kind of snotty in the same way as ‘Ooh I don’t bother with makeup, what a waste, I’d rather have the time to do something worthwhile like read a book.’

Some people enjoy repetitive tasks or see them as calming/relaxing. Plus because it’s mindless it gives you time to think about things. That would be enjoyable. If you personally don’t enjoy it then obviously that’s fine. I don’t enjoy playing volleyball but I don’t see any need to sneer if somebody does.

Kanaloa · 01/05/2023 14:22

Plus someone might enjoy ironing and also enjoy ‘creative’ things. Just because you ironed a shirt earlier doesn’t mean you can’t type up a short story or do some painting in the afternoon.

Oh, are you also unable to comprehend it when people talk about things you didn't say but they want to talk about? Your approach to life sounds rigid, but of course it's up to you.

Re enjoyment: what more do you need to know other than that people enjoy things you don't? As long as it's not illegal or antisocial and they are not forcing you to participate, then you can ignore it and get on with whatever hobbies excite you.

Nellieinthebarn · 01/05/2023 14:31

Unwatching now because the Lighthearted bit has gone AWOL. As it always does.

Busbygirl · 01/05/2023 14:34

Yes I iron clothes that need ironing and bedding.
IMO that’s why the Spanish, Italians etc always look smarter than many scruffy Brits-they wear clean, pressed clothes.

you’re entirely making up the tone here.

I’d say what I’ve written here reveals less rigidity than most. And I didn’t say someone couldn’t enjoy. I asked why.
but you seem to have a very rigid view of what people mean and ascribe tone based on your own prejudices, so let’s leave it there.

But why should someone explain beyond saying they enjoy doing something? If it's not illegal, antisocial and doesn't coerce you, why should they justify themselves to you? That should be the end of it, shouldn't it?

Why can't you comprehend that or even just accept it? Do you think you are special and deserve something more? Why?

People might find your activities to be pointless. No one here asked you to detail or justify them but you did of others. Why?

They have no right so why are you asking?

Well saying someone shouldn’t enjoy something they’ve said they do enjoy because they should be doing something ‘creative’ is sneery. It implies their enjoyment isn’t worthwhile and your ‘creative’ pursuits are worthier.

Except I didn’t say that. I asked why it was enjoyable. If you can’t see a way that could be explained, maybe you are the sneery one?

OccasionalHope · 01/05/2023 20:30

I used to iron everything including knickers, but not very well. The creases seemed to get ironed in somehow.

I haven’t touched an iron in years, although it is still in the airing cupboard for if I have an emergency,

cardibach · 01/05/2023 21:06

I don’t think that’s relevant is it? Lots of things. Not repetitive tasks though.

No you didn’t. You asked why anyone would enjoy it because it isn’t ‘creative.’ That is an implication that ‘creative’ pursuits are more worthy. It makes you sound sneery.

Enko · 02/05/2023 09:11

For me its enjoyable because it's mindless in many ways so I can let my mind drift and I can zone out. Yet productive at the same time. I get a lot of satisfaction out of seeing the neat pile of ironing after and a sense of completion when I pack it away.

To me being creative is enjoyable in a different way. It engages my mind. Ironing doesn't need more than a small amount of attention and it gives me a space to be productive whilst still floating off I to my own little world.

Ironing is the only household chore I actually enjoy doing. I do others obviously, but I do them because they have to be done not because I enjoy them.

I hope that answers your question @cardibach

limitedperiodonly · 02/05/2023 09:25

cardibach · 01/05/2023 21:06

I don’t think that’s relevant is it? Lots of things. Not repetitive tasks though.

It is relevant because you are passing negative judgement on the tastes of others that have no effect on you. I can't imagine why anyone would want to do that.

Perhaps you're coy about revealing your own tastes in case someone else judges them and finds them wanting. I could be wrong, but that's my suspicion because I can't think of any other reason. Is there one? Your favourite pastime is hardly likely to out you so I'm not going to go with that.

There is nothing wrong with repetitive tasks. Many people find them soothing, especially if have a lot of responsibility in their lives and need to unwind. That strikes me as very sensible because the alternative is getting more and more stressed which causes unhappiness to them and others around them.

But if you're the sort of person who craves constant excitement and change, then that is fine too.

I wouldn't judge you for the things you like to do. I'd think: "Cardibach enjoys doing that. How nice."

But some people are horribly judgemental about harmless things that are none of their business, aren't they?
