Does anyone else iron all their clothes? Not daft things like socks and knickers but everything else including bedding?

i don’t love doing it but I just can’t bear the look of unironed clothes (especially for DC)

is anyone else like this? am I mad?

I admire people who iron and I agree it's sometime necessary (eg to sort out a pair of crumpled linen trousers for example, or a button-down collared shirt for work). But on the whole, no. Anything in my house that needs smoothing out gets chucked in the tumble dryer for 10 minutes. Ironing bedsheets regularly (not just for special overnight guests) is madness. Life is short people!

TheSoapyFrog · 29/04/2023 08:46

I iron clothes, but not bedding. There was a time when I didn't iron anything and let the tumble dryer sort it, but clothes still looked crumpled and I felt untidy.

Blossomtoes · 29/04/2023 08:49

My mum used to iron everything except socks. I iron virtually nothing in the winter but most of my summer clothes are cotton or linen and I’d look like a bag lady if they weren’t ironed.

Gatehouse77 · 29/04/2023 08:52

Yes, I do iron because I like it. And I like putting on ironed clothes and getting into ironed bedding. It's feeds into my neat and tidy needs!
It also means I can watch crap TV, which I enjoy, and be productive (another need!). Win win.

Don't give a shit what anyone else does.

PuppyMonkey · 29/04/2023 08:57

I judge people who go around looking like rag bags.

Oh no, how will I ever get over this? That’s it, you’ve convinced me to completely change my ways. Thank you.

@CrispsnDips I always iron my tea towels too. A nice easy meditative activity and I love pulling a fresh, neat towel out the drawer!

So do I. I refuse to have crumpled clothes or bed linen but I actually like ironing and do it while watching TV.
I’d iron for hours rather than cook.

PuppyMonkey · 29/04/2023 08:58

I think it’s a bit sad people feel they can only watch crap TV if they’re also ironing.Grin

WickedSerious · 29/04/2023 09:00

CrispsnDips · 29/04/2023 08:15

I iron my tea towels 😆

My DM always ironed her tea towels,to 'kill the germs'.

Growlybear83 · 29/04/2023 09:03

Yes I iron everything apart from underwear. The vast majority of my clothes are cotton or linen and would be unwearably crumpled if they weren't ironed. I also like getting into a bed with nice crisply ironed sheets and duvet cover. I don't really mind ironing - I sit down in a little room upstairs with the TV on and have some time to myself whilst I'm doing it

I don't actually mind ironing if I have the time but it is the first thing I let slide when I'm busy and then it builds up into a massive job. I do periodically send it out to an amazing woman who picks it up and returns it within a day or two. I used to iron every Sunday morning pre DC and now I am a teacher, Sunday is a work day so I never reinstated that ritual. My mum doesn't even own an iron and always looks good, I'm not sure how she does it! I look like an old rag.

PuttingDownRoots · 29/04/2023 09:33

I was thought the point of ironing tea towels was to check the iron temp before damaging clothes!

I iron stuff if it needs it. My Scout Leader shirt for example, the fabric looks awful unironed. By DDs Cub jumper doesn't need it (mainlyas its all badges). School shirts need it. A tshirt and jeans for housework? It doesn't.

Bedding... it looks nicer but I often have better things to do like comment on mumsnet housework threads.

mydogisthebest · 29/04/2023 09:38

I don't like ironing but do iron most of mine and DH's clothes but not underwear. I like ironed bedding but just cannot be bothered doing it.

I don't think tumble drying has anywhere near the same effect as ironing.

It doesn't bother me if others iron their clothes or not but you can definitely tell whether they do or not

maddening · 29/04/2023 09:41

V little of my stuff (Jersey dresses, night clothes etc workout gear) need ironing, dh irons all the clothes, he does t-shirts, trousers and ds school wear and the occasional item of mine.

For bedding I got an iron press which I can do sat on the sofa and it is physically less taxing so fab for bedding and i do that - usually in an evening watching a film.

MrsToothyBitch · 29/04/2023 09:42

I iron clothes that need it - we've a few items each and then I iron household linens. So tea towels, bedding, my face cloth muslins. They all look and feel nicer and they are all much easier to store after ironing - they all fold up, go away and keep better!

I do a basket a week, usually on early Saturday am whilst watching something on tv. Some weeks it's full other weeks it's not much. It depends whether it's a bedding week & how much of what we've worn needs ironing. It's worth it to me. I probably ignore or half arse other household jobs that other people would prioritise over their ironing.

maddening · 29/04/2023 10:45

And bedding I iron partly as it looks nice but also it stores smaller when ironed.

sixfoot · 29/04/2023 10:45

I don’t iron anything.

babakeri · 29/04/2023 10:47

I am totally the same as you, I don't like ironing and the time it consumes BUT I can't stand looking at unironed clothes!

I notice the unironed clothes on other people too!

It drives me mad.

I could leave my house in mess which won't bother me too much, but there is something about the clothes!!!

ThinWomansBrain · 29/04/2023 10:49

I found the iron a couple of years ago to use some of that iron on hemming stuff.
might have been longer.

Yes,when I'm up to my eyes in it the ironing goes straight to the bottom of my to do list.

limitedperiodonly · 29/04/2023 11:02

I always iron clothes. You can tell, not that it has anything to do with me what anyone else wears so I wouldn't point it out unless they were calling me a fool to my face for ironing and boasting about their liberation from petty chores.

I iron things just before I want to wear them or the night before and hang them up if I have an early start. I'd never iron a stack of washing because it would be tedious and it would just get creased in the wardrobe or drawer and need doing again.

The only time I do a lot of ironing is for holidays. Creases usually drop out of ironed clothes if you hang them in a steamy bathroom, but I always take a travel iron just in case. I take a travel kettle and my favourite mug, teaspoon and jar of coffee too. If I was going somewhere with no electricity I'd have to leave them at home but I've never been anywhere like that have no plans to.

I do like ironed sheets and duvets - they look and feel better - but I can rarely be bothered.

choirmumoftwo · 29/04/2023 11:11

I adore ironing my and would happily do it all day long, especially if the washing has been dried outside. I iron almost everything - not socks and pants (except cotton boxers). Everything sits better in drawers and on shelves when it's ironed.
I have no issues with those who don't iron, I just really enjoy doing it!

Enko · 29/04/2023 16:00

ohtowinthelottery · 29/04/2023 08:23

I iron clothes. Can't abide clothing that looks like it's been slept in. I only iron bedding for the guest bed.
I was brought up in a household where my DF did all the ironing. He ironed everything! Socks, pants, towels (including t- towels ). I think it was more to soften things that had been line dried or hung for days indoors.

I iron tea towels as it gives me a lot of pleasure to see them neatly folded and put into their drawer. :)

Floralnomad · 29/04/2023 16:09

I iron nothing , anything that requires ironing gets sent to my sisters and she sends it with hers to the ironing lady . I do occasionally pick up the ironing from the ironing lady if that counts .

Pleasegodgotosleep · 29/04/2023 16:54

Me. I stick a programme on and watch something, you can get through a lot in an hours episode of Blue Bloods! I can't stand kids going to school with unironed school uniform, especially girls skirts/summer dresses. You abdolutely CAN tell they've not been ironed. If that doesn't bother you then fab but it's not for me.
