Does anyone else iron all their clothes? Not daft things like socks and knickers but everything else including bedding?

i don’t love doing it but I just can’t bear the look of unironed clothes (especially for DC)

is anyone else like this? am I mad?

But where do you ironers find the time and energy?!

We both work full time (teachers). Two kids with numerous activities. I could see me getting some ironing done this weekend as there’s an extra day… but normally? Nope.

Does your school not have a professional dress code?

Ironing baby frogs is soo cruel 🐸

deedeemegadoodoo · 30/04/2023 00:24

I quite like ironing and I wouldn’t feel comfortable in crumpled clothes. My husband isn’t bothered, so I do a very quick press of his TShirts. I take more care over my stuff.

I also find ironing my facecloths, then folding them to fit in a basket very satisfying.

Theoldwoman · 30/04/2023 00:59

I used to iron everything including tea towels, bedding etc.

Then my DC was diagnosed with a life threatening condition and I now only iron as and when needed.

Danikm151 · 30/04/2023 01:05

When I need to use my iron I have to remember where I put it last 😂

If any collars need ironing or kids trousers… I get the hair straightener on them… same technology and easier to handle 🙂

Well you don’t want them looking all crumpled. All the other baby frogs will make fun!

I don’t iron bedding though, despite ironing most other things. I use fitted sheets so they’re stretched anyway.

RosesAndHellebores · 30/04/2023 01:10

Our clothes and bedding get ironed. DH likes his boxers and hankies neatly pressed. My cleaner insists on a steam generator iron for speed.

OldTinHat · 30/04/2023 01:29

What is ironing??!

A dirty word, never to be used in polite company 🤫

Ragwort · 30/04/2023 03:00

I iron ... but it hardly takes much time, I don't get the hate for ironing that most Mumsnetters seem to have ... chores like cooking from scratch and vacuuming are much more tedious IMO ... and I would never, ever garden or mow a lawn, or have a pet. Grin. All of which must be so much more time consuming than a few minutes ironing (& I don't iron for anyone else).

Nat6999 · 30/04/2023 03:31

I haven't ironed since 2013, can't even remember where the iron is.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/04/2023 03:36

I do. No infer do bedding though. My sister thinks it's hilarious, as she irons nothing.

You make the time and devote the energy to things you regard as important.

Many of us work full time and have children though not all are blessed enough to be teachers.

Do you think being a teacher is the key to not ironing or on reflection do you conclude that though you don't want to iron and others do, on balance whatever we want to do whether we are astrophysicists, shop assistants or teachers is all right?

I'm no teacher but I think free will comes into it somewhere. Isn't that what you teach the children in your class?

😂I’ve obviously touched a nerve with this one!

I was just giving context - teachers tend to bring work home 🤷‍♀️Therefore there’s less time (during term) to tit about with an iron. There’s barely time to do the actual washing during the week…

Holidays are a different matter - but we can hardly save it all up until then…

Does your school not have a professional dress code?

If you are a bit careful about the clothes you choose and use a tumble dryer (we couldn’t cope without ours), very few things actually need ironing so desperately that it would affect dress standards.

Maireas · 30/04/2023 07:16

I'm a teacher. I also iron my clothes. As I said upthread I wear smart clothes in natural fibres and don't want to look creased and messy. If your headteacher allows leggings or jeans or whatever, obviously it's a different matter. We have a dress code, though.
Disclaimer: even if we didn't, I'd still iron!

Definitely not allowed jeans or leggings (I teach in private school - another MN crime!). Some of my clothes definitely do need an iron so they don’t get worn much.

Many people have very busy lives, some even work more hours than teachers.

I have a job, run a business from home and have two children with complex additional needs, I’m constantly on the run. I find time to iron things because I prefer them ironed. Other people don’t see the need for ironing and that’s absolutely fine - there’s nothing virtuous about whether you do or don’t iron.

Maireas · 30/04/2023 07:26

What do you wear? I wear shirts, trousers and a jacket, mostly. Warmer weather skirts and dresses. I can't cope with polyester so they're all cotton or linen. I'm in a state secondary school with classes of 30 hot teenagers! It gets warm....That's really why I wear natural fibres and iron, although it's not a chore for me.

Maireas · 30/04/2023 07:27

Exactly, @Jellycatspyjamas . It's about what you choose to wear, how you choose to look and whether or not you want to make the time!

Panickingsomewhat · 30/04/2023 07:36

Of course it’s totally about what you make time for. I do realise that. It’s just surprising to me that this task that I see as very ‘optional’ ever makes it to the top of the list 🤷‍♀️There are tons of jobs that are not optional (to me) - cooking, cleaning bathrooms, taking kids to sports, doing my own exercise, doing dishes, grocery shopping (either ordering or physically going), actually doing the laundry, finding time to sleep… It just surprises me that what I see as a ‘luxury’ task (ie one that it’s nice to get done but doesn’t normally make the cut) is top of so many people’s lists 🤷‍♀️

It’s not top of my list by any means, but it is on my list and as such I have time set aside weekly, Sunday afternoon means Johnny Walker on the radio and ironing. It takes an hour or so most weeks so it’s hardly onerous and I feel better knowing everyone clothes are ready for the week.

Mn is so anti ironing. You will get plenty claiming noone can see the difference.

I can. I accept you are ok with looking like that. I don't judge your choice I am not ok with ut for myself.

Bedding ironed has the most amazing sensation and I am not willing to give up that sensation.

So yes I iron and I actually quite like it pod cast on and just get on with it.

I agree. I work with a few people who don't iron anything and you can definitely tell on some of their clothing. They don't look smart.

Panickingsomewhat · 30/04/2023 07:59

@Jellycatspyjamas
That’s fine and makes sense. What I mean is that I (in term time) genuinely don’t have that time to set aside.

Some posters (I don’t mean you specifically) really seem to bristle at the idea that anyone is busier than them during the week. We’re not all operating at exactly the same level of busy-ness at all times; that would be bonkers. I’ve really annoyed some posters by suggesting I don’t have time to iron regularly during term time. I suppose I could do it instead of getting a certain chunk of sleep… In school holidays I could iron every item if I wanted to though, I guess. But it wouldn’t help with school uniform/work clothes.

DappledThings · 30/04/2023 08:03

Is it that surprising that people have different priorities? If I cleaned my bathroom and kitchen or hoovered as often as lots of people on here do I wouldn't have time for ironing. I just chose to prioritise ironing because I prefer it.
