to think there's no upper age limit to wear jeans?

My mum has always had some weird ideas about what's age appropriate for adults. Women over 30 shouldn't have long hair, for example.

She was telling me yesterday about having lunch with a friend who is in her 80s and turned up wearing jeans. "What's she doing wearing jeans at her age?" I suggested that she might be happy wearing jeans and comfortable in them and that there isn't an age limit. Oh yes there are, says Mum, "older people" shouldn't be wearing jeans.

Weirdo, isn't she?

I saw a clickbait type video the other day that was something like 'watch this 40 year old women get a fresh edgy hair cut and look 20 years younger'. It featured some fake skit style start or an average normal looking women being told she looks 'too old' for long hair by her boss.

The hair cut was then the same short haircut EVERY 40 year old mam had when I was a kid. The comments all confirmed it was the least edgy and most predicable hair cut she could possibly get and she in no way looked younger but basically just put on a beacon saying 'I'm over 40'.

I suppose it worked, people clicked lol.

I don't get the older women having short hair thing. I mean if you GENUINELY love and suit short hair fine (my 40 year old friend ALWAYS had short pixie cut hair and it does suit her in the 15 years I have known her) but why people who always had long hair suddenly slice it off I just don't get it.

If I cut my hair off I'm gonna look like Gary Lineker, I just don't have the ears for short hair regardless of if I'm 4, 40 or 104 lol.

I've just gone super short pixie, aged 65, and I'm loving it but it's my choice and not an age thing. I have the thickest, waviest hair you can imagine, considered a gift by many women but a curse by me! But it's become, possibly a menopause thing, completely unmanageable. Every morning for the past 60 years I've had to spend ages blow drying/straightening/fighting my dandelion clock of hair - and life's too short tbh. When I was at school I used to go to bed wearing a pair of (clean) knickers on my head to keep my hair relatively decently in place. But now I've had my hair cut off I now have cheekbones I never realised I had and rock some fabulous age-inappropiate earrings.

Squidlette · 30/04/2023 13:26

I cut all my hair off in my late 30s. Well, not all, it's just past chin length, so I can go messy or sleek. I just felt that everyone had long hair and I was sick of looking like everyone else. It's definitely more of a statement than longer hair. I do sometimes miss the swish and how longer hair can give the illusion that you're younger than you are.

2bazookas · 30/04/2023 13:59

I expect there is an upper age limit, we just haven't reached it yet.. we're only 76.

I imagine there's some speedy cut-off point where incontinence intersects with assisted toiletting in the old folks home. I'll let you know if I find out.

itsmylife7 · 30/04/2023 14:11

Me and my Mum used to share our flared jeans in the 70s.😄

Mammyloveswine · 30/04/2023 14:12

I'm 36 and love my long blonde hair!!

ilovepixie · 30/04/2023 14:30

My mum is 76 and wears jeans.

celticprincess · 30/04/2023 17:33

My mum is on her 70s and has never worn jeans ever. She did do denim skirts in her younger days. I had to fight for jeans as a kid as they were seen as men’s work wear. Have pretty much lived in them ever since though and in my mid 40s I’ve no plan to change that. Just keep tweaking the style - who else is pleased boot cut is coming back into shops?? She also suggested I cut off my hair when approaching 40s. No way. I did have a very short back and sides cut as a younger girl then grew it out to a perm in the 80s then put to straight on the 90s. I’m keeping it mid - long length. I’ve been going very grey (white) since my 20s though and it’s a struggle to find a colour that doesn’t age me or grows out too fast in my roots. I’m naturally dark. I love a curl and keep debating a loose perm but my teen perm was a definite tight poodle thing.

I’ve one child who prefers Jean and another who won’t touch them. But they both love denim dungarees much to the horror of the older generation.

I say you wear what you feel comfy in. I see many older ladies wearing jeans and think good on them. But also see many dresses in traditional old lady skirts or trouser type suits.

My partner's Mum is 80, she does have short hair, but in a trendy style, she wears jeans and leather jackets, trainers etc, she always has full make up on, and dresses up if going out. I think she's fabulous, always looks great, and hope I am the same if I make it to her age 😀. I actually love going shopping with her as she finds things for me and vice versa, she's also a brilliant seamstress and anything I buy that's not quite right, she takes up or in or alters accordingly. But there should be no age limit on anything, let people live their best happy lives!!

danblack87 · 01/05/2023 13:01

There is no age limit for wearing jeans, having long hair or wearing knee length boots with ski pants. I have no expectation of changing my habits to 'suit' 'old-fashioned' ideas. If any of my children said otherwise I really would not be impressed ... I'd draw the line at a mini skirt, high heels and a basque top; however ... Now, that would look really ridiculous especially with my hair which reaches half way down my back!!!!

EggInANest · 01/05/2023 13:12

My hugely stylish 92 yo aunt wears jeans.

The very thought of ‘slacks’ makes my 64 yo mind freeze in horror.

Since I am so ancient I remember when wearing denim jeans as fashion / everyday clothing became a ‘thing’.

As a 10 year old, my Mum banned turn ups as ‘common’ (until stylish DH of said stylish aunt turned up in blue jeans with turn ups and espadrilles as they had been to France, which gave credibility to their style), and my grandmother hugely disapproved of girls wearing jeans (or any trousers, but our M&S stirrup pants didn’t have them anyway) with a zip fly at the front, as this was seen as being all too toilet-oriented. She did her best to find me jeans with a side zip.

I now have many jeans. Levi’s, Boyfriend, straight, etc in denim and black, mostly.

cobden28 · 01/05/2023 13:15

I'm a 68 yr old female with hair to my waist, and live in denim (skirt or jeans). The idea that women over a certain age shouldn't wear their hair in a certain style or dress in a certain way is old fashioned nowadays anyway.

danblack87 · 01/05/2023 13:20

@WhatTheHeckyPeck : I agree with you full heartedly -- My partner is 72, has a mohican (he has tamed the colours recently!!) he looks fab whether he wears jeans, denim shirt, denim jacket/leather jacket or is 'fully, suited and booted'. I am 60 and wear what I wish.

Pieceofpurplesky · 01/05/2023 13:23

My 82 year old mum looks fabulous in her jeans.

cobden28 · 01/05/2023 13:24

When I started work in the civil service fifty years ago it still then wasn't the norm or always acceptable for women to wear trousers to work although we younger ones sometimes did. One colleague, who was a few years older than my Mum, would never wear trousers in public, only for when gardening at home. If someone knocked at her door when she was gardening and wearing trousers, she's change into a skirt before answering the door!

danblack87 · 01/05/2023 13:30

My daughter 30 loves my look and, in fact, passes on clothes to me that she no longer wears ... she knows what suits me best ...Love my girl. x

Iwasafool · 01/05/2023 13:33

I'm 70 and I'm sitting here in my jeans. If there is a rule about wearing jeans no one has told me.

QueefQueen80s · 01/05/2023 13:46

God I hate fashion rules

AuntieStella · 01/05/2023 14:38

It's not a fashion rule.

It's just another example of everyday ageism.

This time with the aim of trying to persuade people to stop wearing perfectly good clothes that they like, so that they buy more clothes

QueefQueen80s · 01/05/2023 14:59

I hate that too 😂 I'll wear jeans til the day I die.

Havanananana · 01/05/2023 15:15

I'm in Europe.

My bank manager wears jeans, as does my accountant and my solicitor. And the GP. And the dentist and his assistants. And the ladies at the Town Hall. And the estate agent who showed me the apartment that I bought (his colleague wears traditional leather shorts in the summer - lederhosen - as do the male staff in the bank on Fridays).

As a manager in a large office in England I still remember being asked in the 1990s by a female member of staff (she was 40-ish at the time) if it was alright for her to wear trousers - i.e. she was asking for permission. Having just moved back to the UK at the time, I was astonished to be asked - all of the younger female staff wore trousers, as did almost all of the female staff except a few managers who felt that wearing a skirt and jacket somehow gave them extra gravitas, or was expected of someone in their position.

RandomGeocache · 01/05/2023 15:25

My mum was a teacher all her working life, she started teaching in the mid-60s and always taught the younger years, 4-7 year olds. Never ever wore trousers to work even though they would have been much more practical than a skirt when dealing with small kids.

Totally! Short hair always ages women I think.

Sunnysal · 02/05/2023 18:15

I wear denim jeans or a skirt all the time. To be extra dressed up I wear black jeans. Hair shoulder length to wear loose or tied back.....I live in a hot country. The only concession to my 72 years is a large swim suit to hide my saggy thighs.

ALongHardWinter · 13/06/2023 18:39

I'm nearly 60 and I wear jeans/denim jeggings all the time. My late DM used to be of the opinion that women over 30 should not wear their hair longer than shoulder length. She said it made a woman look like an 'old witch'! Charming!
