to think there's no upper age limit to wear jeans?

My mum has always had some weird ideas about what's age appropriate for adults. Women over 30 shouldn't have long hair, for example.

She was telling me yesterday about having lunch with a friend who is in her 80s and turned up wearing jeans. "What's she doing wearing jeans at her age?" I suggested that she might be happy wearing jeans and comfortable in them and that there isn't an age limit. Oh yes there are, says Mum, "older people" shouldn't be wearing jeans.

Weirdo, isn't she?

It's weird isn't it? My mum and dad were born in the 20's, and had very specific ideas about some things, particularly clothing and hair. My mum never wore jeans or trousers, but then had worn so many beautiful couture dresses in the 40's and 50's, I kind of understand. Dad wouldn't "let" her wear them either, or work (!). Mum also had the short hair past 40 rule. In other ways, though, they were soooo avant guard. Very relaxed about sex and nudity, very open and honest. Lots of wild parties when I was young, and I mean wild, very bohemian. I just never understood the dicotomy.

Thank you those who replied to my comment. I haven't seen such posturing outrage since Noah was a lad
Hilarious.

Plumbear2 · 28/04/2023 12:15

My parents are mid 70s. They always where jeans. This generation grew up wearing jeans, why should they stop now?

RuthW · 28/04/2023 12:16

Of course there is an upper age for wearing jeans. I would say around 120 years of age.

Mangone · 28/04/2023 12:19

I'm just browsing floral crimpolene dresses and pineapple knit acrylic cardies as I type. They'll go a treat with my cauliflower perm and sensible sandals.
Anyone want a mint?

Those of you who are over 30 and think you (or you bf/mum) look good in jeams, are sadly deluded
Jeans are never flattering apart from about 20 minutes when you are 16, just the right height and have the right body shape. After that, ridiculous
Just because you 'can' doesn't mean you should...

I'm not wearing jeans because I look good in them. I'm wearing them because they're comfy, hard wearing, and have decent pockets. Fuck wearing clothes for other people

IamSuperTired · 28/04/2023 12:21

My mum wore jeans pretty much til the day she died (at 75). She looked great always :)

Alarae · 28/04/2023 12:23

I recently turned 30 and decided I'm living my 'fuck it 30s' which basically means I'm going to do what I want irrespective of how it might be viewed socially (obviously nothing illegal).

This has mainly transpired into a violet balayage, wearing many t-shirts of cartoons (newest addition is a fabulous Care Bears t-shirt from Zara) and buying a Nintendo Switch and finally playing Pokémon.

Life is for living regardless of age. Nothing tickles me more than seeing the older generation with pastel hair colours! Saw a magnificent older lady with pink hair- she was amazing.

TBF they weren’t outraged so much as taking the piss out of the token thread twat.

FraiseRoyale · 28/04/2023 12:28

I'm in my 70s and still wearing jeans. Skinnies, even, although I know they are supposedly out of fashion. But I'll keep on wearing them because as most women of a certain age know, the legs are the last to go. 😀

MisanthropicMe · 28/04/2023 12:43

My Granny wore jeans up until her dying day, she was 84 (and she looked fabulous)!

Doggymummar · 28/04/2023 08:50

My mum was the same re long hair on over 30s I had mine cut and regretted it. When I wasn't pregnant by 28 she said you wouldn't eat a 28 year old egg so why do you think it will make a decent child. She had me and my brother at 21 and 22.

I never did have children as I was so affected by this comment, which I now realise was rediculous.

I wouldn't eat a 16yr old egg either......Confused

username98765 · 28/04/2023 12:58

Oh god! I live in jeans! Can't ever imagine wearing anything else. Maybe I will but at the moment at 40 I will continue 🤣

Came to post the same thing.

I wear them because they are practical, comfortable and hard wearing. I dress for myself, not the approval of strangers.

Isseywith3witchycats · 28/04/2023 13:02

useitorlose · 28/04/2023 13:04

My parents are both 76, though dad will be 77 in a couple of weeks. They both wear jeans a lot, although dad can usually be found in shorts, whatever the weather. He still rides a motorbike too, and camps on the IoM for the TT every year (unfortunately DM not well enough to leave for 12 days this year Sad )

Askil · 28/04/2023 13:05

MIL is convinced the only reason women wear any kind of trouser is because of the cold British weather. She believes women should not wear trousers full stop.

I've been trying to find some info on when women first started wearing trousers Britain just to educate her a bit.

TeaserandtheFirecat · 28/04/2023 13:06

69, live in jeans and give no fucks what my arse looks like.

Jonei · 28/04/2023 13:08

One of my relatives is 90, and she still wears jeans. She looks absolutely fine in them.

EmpressSoleil · 28/04/2023 13:15

I stopped wearing jeans as I never really found them comfortable and then had some menopause weight gain and though no, I can't do it anymore! 😂so have to admit I now love an elasticated waist! My first thought now if I want to buy clothing is "will it be comfortable".

pizzaHeart · 28/04/2023 13:15

PuppyMonkey · 28/04/2023 08:29

I’m afraid you’re wrong OP, there is a little known law from the 1980s following Parliament’s approval of the Denim Act 1981 which specifically says anyone aged 40 or over is legally prevented from buying or wearing jeans, dungarees and any kind of denim jacket. I think it’s a fine of £25 for a first offence but it increases to life imprisonment for repeat offenders. I’m surprised you aren’t aware of this tbf.

Ohh @PuppyMonkey
I think you’ve just found a source of money for the whole NHS England. We just have to stick to fines and all problems will be solved. There are hundreds of thousands of repeated offenders lurking around in my area (including myself) I think the addition of jackets will help us to solve the shortage of dentists.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 28/04/2023 13:16

God no! I'm 58 and wear jeans daily( not the same pair obviously!)
However I don't work and find them comfortable

reallyworriedjobhunter · 28/04/2023 13:18

I'm wearing jeans right now. Totally tempted to get a Twix now and neck it on the way back from the shop.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 28/04/2023 13:18

I've always had short hair though, it's a soft kind of pixie cut
Anything longer drowns my face

LlynTegid · 28/04/2023 13:31

No upper age limit, indeed the people who can look the worst can be younger people, depending on the style adopted.
