Just as the subject says, I’ve watched nearly all of them on Netflix. Really could do with some more suggestions. Thank you 😊

@skippy67 I watched Seven when in NY a late showing, was atmospheric.

I do like horror films but they don’t really scare me much at all. The film that disturbed me was The Road.

Don't Look Now
Saw years ago... never forgotten

Yes - another one with no real explanation, and a very bleak feeling right through.

Talking of bleak, I know it's not a horror but went to see The Banshees of Inisherin expecting a totally different thing. Bleak AF and I found it really upsetting.
The donkey, Padraic, Dominic, all just really really sad and depressing.

I thought I was going to see a comedy.

Proper scary gore......The Green Inferno.

I still have flashbacks every so often.

There's a scene where a man is utterly butchered and has his eyes removed.

Oh my god, it's awful!

Oh yes. And it was worse because he was the only really "nice" character (the others were all very flawed) and was done early on.

AnyaMarx · 28/04/2023 02:12

Try malevolent on Netflix .
Really really want v scary

ALongHardWinter · 28/04/2023 02:21

I loved Dog Soldiers, but as a previous poster said,it is also funny in parts. I also loved An American Werewolf in London, which again,is more of a horror/dark comedy. Even now,40 years after it first came out,I think the scene where he transforms into the werewolf is amazing.

Catsmere · 28/04/2023 02:35

John Carpenter’s The Thing. Saw it when I was in my late teens and could barely sit through it. Very well made but I would never watch it again.

Nerdynerdynerd · 28/04/2023 03:21

Spring
Hatching
Oculus
Session 9
Train to Busan
Overlord
Aterrados (terrified)

Some lesser known scary movies I've enjoyed!

Nerdynerdynerd · 28/04/2023 03:24

Another

Triangle

JemimaTab · 28/04/2023 03:25

Dumplings, a Hong Kong film. Truly horrifying.
I liked A Dark Song (with some misgivings about the end) - it was really unsettling.
The Borderlands - a British found footage type film. I found the ending really horrifying.

Eden Lake. Especially if you're British.

Great film!

It Follows is my favourite. It's not necessarily conventionally scary but very freaky and a unique concept. Give it a go! I LOVE it

I really enjoyed it. It does a lot of clever stuff to make you feel sort of destabilised which I only started noticing in the second watch. When I googled it to see if I was going mad there were loads of film critics discussing it.

Like, it's hard tell what era or season it is. Bikinis in one scene and then heavy winter coats in next. Lush green foliage in one shot then leaves on drives. Vintage decor and corded phones juxtaposed with modern fridges. New cars mixed with old Cadillac models in seemingly brand new condition. Probs loads of other stuff I've not noticed.

StepAwayFromTheBiscuitJar · 28/04/2023 04:33

Most fucked up horror I've seen is Inside (L'Interieur) with Alysson Paradis and Beatrice Dalle of Betty Blue fame. The American remake isn't a patch on the original. Seriously unflinchingly disturbing but good.

RackJussells · 28/04/2023 05:27

Agree with many other suggestions on here, my favourite films are:

The Descent
Eden Lake
Wolf Creek
Hereditary

also, Calibre. I’ve watched it a few times now and it always makes my hands and feet sweat!
What a gripping film!

ChellyT · 28/04/2023 06:06

A Spanish movie called The Orphanage

EmpressSoleil · 28/04/2023 06:20

A lesser known film I really enjoyed was “Frailty”
Its about a man with 2 young sons who believes he has been told by angels to kill certain people, so basically becomes a serial killer. But the storyline is good.

Nitgel · 28/04/2023 06:28

The borderlands

Coffeeandbourbons · 28/04/2023 06:34

Martyrs. Genuinely the most fucked up film I’ve ever seen, absolutely horrifying.

For explicit gore and surreal horror The Hills have Eyes

There’s a really good film called Ritual. Four friends go hiking in the woods in Sweden after the death of their other friend during a botched robbery, it’s like Blair Witch meets Midsommar but I really enjoyed it

Whatafustercluck · 28/04/2023 06:44

Hereditary is the only one I've started watching and ended up having to turn away/ switch off. Starts off unsettling, becomes horrific, stays in your head too.

I've heard lots about Wolf Creek but can't bring myself to watch it, mostly though because there's a rape scene in it.

I'm not a fan of gore and much prefer psychological, creepy and jump scare films. For this reason one of the best I've seen is Babadook.

CreamTeaThievery · 28/04/2023 06:58

It has to be sinister for me.

Coffeeandbourbons · 28/04/2023 06:59

HappiDaze · 27/04/2023 23:00

Hostel is pretty horrific

First proper horror film I saw. I was 11! I just remember the bit where she throws his dick to the dogs to eat 😕

JudyGemstone · 28/04/2023 07:01

Ritual is like the male version of The Descent, group of guys heading into the wilderness…

i really liked the Duplass brothers Creep and Creep 2. Very ominous sense of dread building and the socially awkwardness of it!

Similar themes in Speak No Evil.

The Taking of Deborah Logan scared me, really interesting idea to link dementia to demonic possession.

The original Ju On (the grudge) terrified me. Have to admit I prefer the Gore Verbinski remake of The Ring though.

Any fellow horror nerds listen to the Evolution of Horror podcast? Highly recommended!

merrymelodies · 28/04/2023 07:09

Trying to think of ones that haven't yet been mentioned... old but A Nightmare on Elm Street was scary, or Evil Dead, which terrified me. The Conjuring, Halloween, Alien...

IHeartGeneHunt · 28/04/2023 07:12

I love horror films, and watch one most nights to unwind before bed because they don't scare me.
However.
The Others.
Terrified me and I couldn't sleep without a light on for days. I've never been able to watch it again.

Coffeeandbourbons · 28/04/2023 07:13

The Others?? Really? Not being sarcastic just surprised!
