Just as the subject says, I’ve watched nearly all of them on Netflix. Really could do with some more suggestions. Thank you 😊

Me! I have the DVD!

Ahh! I remember it every so often and search for it on prime etc but it’s never around. Might just have to get the dvd to see if it’s as creepy as I remember!

I've been trying to remember the name of this film for years!

It really is. I think it was ahead of its time.

It's when you realise certain people aren't what they seem... the participants are woefully naive though.

What's interesting about horror films is the huge diversity in the genre. Historical dramas, for example, generally tend to be pretty serious but with horror there's often a huge variation spanning utter schlock (often intentional) and intelligent films which use clever psychological manipulation to scare.

I feel like there's a lot more utter shite than most genres but a well done film that leaves you feeling unsettled is a rare treat.

StepAwayFromTheBiscuitJar · 05/05/2023 05:53

Another slasher flick which I remember enjoying was You're Next. Quite smart and self aware, a little tongue in cheek, but also tense and brutal at times.

Dead Of Night, 1945 classic British horror film. Not gory but genuinely scary. The final ventriloquist story gives me the creeps just thinking about it.

Agree. Brilliant film.

nicslackey · 05/05/2023 11:19

Carnival of Souls is creepy and unsettling
Dead of Night is great as I love anthologies (but the golf one is dire)
From Beyond the Grave (70s anthology)
A Quiet Place and the sequel is just as good unusually
Bad Samaritan
Bone Tomahawk with Kurt Russell
Dorothy Mills
Last Passenger British and set on a train
Howl British and set on a train
Ravenous (Robert Carlyle)
The Awakening ( if you liked The Others)
The Perfect Host
Whistle and I'll Come to You (original)

Supernatural was another horror anthology from the 70's that I really enjoyed! The two parter Countess Ilona/The Werewolf Reunion is excellent, I also like Dorabella, it's on Amazon (you have to buy it), some are on YouTube, well worth a watch!

efeslight · 05/05/2023 17:30

Not sure if it is classified as a horror film, but I saw A field in England a while ago and it's very creepy. One particular scene which isn't violent but weird and confusing, has stayed with me

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 05/05/2023 21:28

I love A Field in England, one of my favourites - but that scene is crazy and disturbing 😳.

wolf creek - the only film I’ve ever switched off and have no desire to know what happened!!

Oh yes me too, never made it far and turned it off. It was awful and I enjoy most horror.

I've never met anyone else who admits to watching Supernatural! I was far too young for it and I remember being terrified of those stories, Dorabella, Countess Ilona and Viktoria were the scariest. There was also a book of the stories published.

I loved the golf story in Dead of Night! It was perfectly placed to add some humour and get us all to put our guards down just before the final, terrifying story.

Hmm! So many of my favourites already mentioned... I love Pan's Labyrinth and The Wicker Man is another of my favourites.

I think I'll add these to the list:
The Lost Boys
The Devil's Backbone
The Changeling
Interview with a Vampire
The House that Bled To Death
Night Of the Demon

katniss44 · 05/05/2023 22:18

I watched Smile recently and that freaked me out more than a film has in a long time. So creepy.

I love all Ben Wheatleys stuff- folk horror legend!

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 06/05/2023 13:56

Kill List was the first Wheatly film I saw and I think Sightseers, while fairly dark* *is hilarious.

@Tanith It came out before I was born but I found the book in a charity shop when I was about 11 or so and loved it, so when I found the actual series years later I watched aaaalllll of it in one go. It's one of my favourite comfort watches.

I finally got around to watching Midsommar yesterday and absolutely loved it. I'm rubbish at keeping up with new releases, I'll see an advert for something, think 'ooh I should watch that' and then not bother. It's a cracking film, definitely going on my favourites list.

I also watched Prey For The Devil which was extremely predictable and not even a little bit scary but not completely terrible.

StepAwayFromTheBiscuitJar · 10/05/2023 09:51

Yes, Kill List and Bone Tomahawk were both good.

Classic: The Haunting (1960). Really creepy and psychological. Spielberg said it was one of his favourite films.
Suspiria. Shit me up massively.
Ginger Snaps. Not well known but packs a real punch.
For a palate cleanser, how about Went The Day Well? It's not a horror and very old but it really disturbed me and is a bit of a cult classic.

Ginger Snaps is great! One of my best friend's favourites.

Has anyone mentioned As Above, So Below yet? Set in Paris catacombs.

This is a great film! Really spooky and atmospheric

@Rebuildingconfidence

Came back to say thank you for recommending Vivarium which I watched after reading your post.

This is a great film. I'm surprised I'd never heard of it because this is a really great film. It's very clever and is an interesting commentary on what young couples aspire to - owning a home, having a child - as well as the druggery of raising a child.

Highly recommend. It's not jump scare /gore type scary. It's more freaking, unsettling, unnerving type scary but a fantasic film I think.
