Just as the subject says, I’ve watched nearly all of them on Netflix. Really could do with some more suggestions. Thank you 😊

There’s a movie called Shutter. Had to correct that from Shitter- thanks autocorrect!
I remember it being creepy.

Make sure it's the original and not the crappy American temake though.

I loved Doctor Sleep as well. I know Stephen King's material doesn't always translate to the screen well, but this felt both typical SK, and pretty true to the book (which I read first). If that makes sense.
And I do think The Mist was a good film, and also fairly true to the short story.

I have just read a collection of novellas by Joe Hill (SK's son), "Strange Weather" - and one or two in there would make good films, but one ("Loaded") will definitely never happen, even though topical in terms of Black Lives Matter and gun control. Still a "good", nerve-wracking tale, which reads in a King Style, which I always find - as a Constant Reader - quite comforting. The other one "Rain" is loosely about climate change and messing with science, which is of course, always relevant, but definitely with a horror theme threading through it.

I digress.

Joe Hill's short story The Black Phone has been made into a film. It's pretty good.

Stephen King is very hit and miss for me. He's written some absolute rubbish as well as some classics.

Funny Games - the original version by Michael Haneke

As a silly young girl I made a mistake of watching it on acid and I still get flashbacks of that movie.
Not a typical horror but utterly terryfing imo

yellowsmileyface · 01/05/2023 16:35

@theescapeladder Funny Games... on acid? That must've been intense! 😳

It is a great horror though. Truly suspenseful. Even the bit with the eggs is so unnerving.

theescapeladder · 01/05/2023 20:01

@yellowsmileyface yep, intense is the word.

It was definitely an unusual choice of a movie for a trip with friends 🤯

Never looked at a lake without shuddering since then.

I’m watching The Ring ( US version) tonight. On iPlayer. I love Ringu but actually the American one is pretty good and I’m no fan of a re make normally.
I think it has nice touches like the blurry CCTV and keeps the original imagery ; girl in the cupboard, the hair , the tree. Also likes that it reinforces the issue with the scary girl which sort of gets lost in the original. That’s she was always truly evil and unrelenting hence the well.

Marchintospring · 01/05/2023 21:17

Actually might watch something else in a minute……😬🧟‍♀️

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 01/05/2023 21:41

iThe American remake of Ringu isn’t half bad. One of the more successful US remakes imo.

HowDid · 01/05/2023 21:52

iThe American remake of Ringu

Is that like The Ring but with Penguins?

Enjoy. I watched the ring for the first time at my friends sleepover I was like 9/10. We sat together hiding not knowing her older sister was sitting upstairs waiting for the film to finish so she could ring the house phone like off the film.

I flew off the couch like I had a bomb up my arse thinking it was the girl off the ring. Never watched it since haha. But was a spooky film!

I’ve had to stop watching. I’m thinking it’s actually scarier after watching it a few times too. I notice lots more little things.
Why can’t they do a good version of Pet Semetary? I mean it’s got woods, remote houses and an unknown but pervasive evil that goes from first people through the wars to modern times. How hard can it be?

LatteOneShotplease · 01/05/2023 23:17

@DerekFaker
I agree with SK being hit and miss - and of course, he freely admits that the work he did when "not in his right mind" was not his best ("Tommyknockers" is one example.) I read everything of his for years, but now am a bit behind.
Thanks for telling me about the Joe Hill film adaptation; I shall seek it out.

@Marchintospring
I think Pet Sematary must be difficult to put onto film - and works best as a book. Main issue is a re-animated animal; that just never ever works out well.

Paper house messes with my head and I love a good horror

He really is. The Stand and IT are my favourite ever books, but I have tried several times to get through the Dark Tower series and it just descends into absolute dross. Ditto Insomnia, Christine, Cujo and Dreamcatcher.

I think I am one of the few who likes Rose Madder and Gerald's Game. I've read them four or five times.

I've not managed to read much since he published 11/22/63.

Has anyone seen Infinity Pool yet? It's not scary but it is very gory.

I really liked it. Mainly for Mia Goth’s performance, would watch her in anything, she’s captivating.

Brandon Cronenberg seems to be coming into his own as a film maker, he’s clearly inspired by his dad’s work but not just a copycat.

I’m watching Lake Mungo. Slightly spooky because it seems so real.

Martyrs. Genuinely the most fucked up film I’ve ever seen, absolutely horrifying.

For explicit gore and surreal horror The Hills have Eyes

There’s a really good film called Ritual. Four friends go hiking in the woods in Sweden after the death of their other friend during a botched robbery, it’s like Blair Witch meets Midsommar but I really enjoyed it

Which Martyrs? There's two, one from 2008 subtitled, and one from 2015 English 😊

mysonsmother82 · 02/05/2023 19:37

God I'd forgotten about martyrs. Only seen the 2008 one and it truly is horrifying.

DeadButDelicious · 02/05/2023 19:43

I rewatched The Wicker Man today, I forgot how good it was! I'm very into folk horror at the moment.
