Just as the subject says, I’ve watched nearly all of them on Netflix. Really could do with some more suggestions. Thank you 😊

Watched Men recently and just didn't get it? What was the actual point?

Yeah I thought it was silly.

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 30/04/2023 09:21

I thought Men had quite a clear point? It was about the threat posed to women from men, how women sometimes perceive (all) men after trauma, and what they demand from us. I really liked it.

Yes, I mean it's literally called Men. Not sure how the point could have been any clearer. She ate an apple fgs!

What am I missing about this film?! A few people have commented on it now. I absolutely fucking hated it. I mean, no word of a lie, I just wanted them all to die so I could have done with it. It seriously pissed me off. Shit characters, shit shifting story "oh it's about this, no it's about that but we're not going to explain, we're just going to add another bit onto the arc for no fucking reason, oh are you losing interest? Ok here's this... " Tossers

I agree. I didn't find The Strangers scary at all. I found it pretty boring in fact. Each to their own, though!

DerekFaker · 30/04/2023 13:38

Bapbap · 29/04/2023 18:43

The segment in VHS2 called Safe Haven. It's got it all.

It's amazing! Way better than Amateur Night or whatever it's called form the first one that everyone raves about for some reason.

Doyoumind · 30/04/2023 13:39

I agree The Strangers is shit.

Even though some people say it's laughable, The Blair Witch Project scared the shit out of me. I was hugely into horror films and nothing had ever got to me like that did. At the time it was different and new, and I'm sure seeing it in the cinema made it worse. It put me off watching a lot of similar horror films that followed.

And Ringu. I can watch the American remake but I don't think I could watch the original again.

What did that have to do with the weird births?

Another vote for Paranormal Activity.

And don't ever watch the original (non-Hollywood) version of The Vanishing. Just don't ever watch it.
Ooh - will you say what happens?

Sorry Latte - I've been away from the internet for a few days, so apologies for not responding earlier.

Well - I could tell you but it would be a heck of a spoiler if anyone else was planning to watch The Vanishing (original). The one I'm referring to is in French and Dutch and the ending doesn't pull any punches, which I understand the Hollywood remake with Jeff Bridges does, and that has a happy ending.

It wasn't just the horror of the ending - it was the pervading sense of pure evil which built up during the film that I will never forget. The reason I watched it is: I LOVE a real psychological scare, but am very squeamish and can't cope with blood and gore. A film buff friend said to me (with a knowing smile) 'The Vanishing is the most horrific film I've ever seen and you don't see a drop of blood or witness any violence'. I was intrigued, so bought a DVD and the final scene just made me yelp out loud in utter horror!

Please do PM me if you really want me to tell you what happens!!

Psycho got in my head more than any other film ever has

My favourites are Safe Haven and then Storm Drain from VHS94.

ALL HAIL RAATMA

HowDid · 30/04/2023 16:07

@CoffeeCantata Agree - the original vanishing is very psychologically disturbing. I don't like to think about it.

Have you read Peter James' Dead Simple? Similar in some ways.

aSofaNearYou · 30/04/2023 16:15

I'm not sure why because it was quite trashy really but Unfriended has stayed on my mind for years. Possibly the sense of dread.

Bookist · 30/04/2023 16:54

Marchintospring · 29/04/2023 20:21

Agreed. The Others is unsettling and creepy. You don’t really know what’s going on but you know something is really wrong in that house.
I thought the husband coming home was so original too. The fact he loved them and was loved enough to get home but ultimately he had to go back to the battlefield he came from.

Whereas Hereditary was plain stupid I thought. Some director just putting together scenes to shock rather than having any real ideas. My husband doesn’t like scary films and even he said it wasn’t scary at all just a bit nasty.

Nodding in agreement too. It's very eerie but in a subtle way. In the scene where her and her husband are in bed, he gets up and you realise his reflection doesn't show in the large mirror.

Bapbap · 30/04/2023 16:58

Films that weren't completely terrifying but stayed with me and had some shivery moments

Lake Mungo (I loved this)
Paranormal Activity 1 and 3
The Conjuring
Carnival of Souls
The Wailing (korean)
Barbarian
The Borderlands

And I watched the original Poltergeist the other day and it's pretty scary!

Bapbap · 30/04/2023 16:59

I thought the Others wasn't scary at all but was one of the saddest films I've ever seen.

LatteOneShotplease · 30/04/2023 17:00

@CoffeeCantata

No worries :o)

It does sound very scary, in a non-typical horror way. I am going to seek it out - I think. But if I lose my nerve, I shall be sending you a message so that you can tell me! (Or can't find it to watch.)

As I have said earlier, it seems OK to watch them at the time - but on the dead of night, they come back to mind. So I may regret watching it, if it is bad as you have said. Thank you though, for the information.

Cantsayanything · 30/04/2023 17:18

David Cronenberg films from the 70s and 80s - Shivers, Scanners, Dead Ringers, and Videodrome.

Peeping Tom, 1960s British horror.

Kill Baby Kill, Italian 1960s - best with subtitles not dubbed

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 30/04/2023 20:37

katkins23 · 30/04/2023 14:16

Loads! I don't want to put too many spoilers but - representation of the patriarchy through the generations and everyone gradually becoming numb to it, ending with the gaslighting lines of the final man in her life. It really is not subtle.

Shabang21 · 30/04/2023 21:20

The Descent, It Follows and Lake Mungo shat me right up. Enjoy!

mysonsmother82 · 30/04/2023 21:51

Mum and Dad more disturbing than scary but a good watch.

updin · 30/04/2023 21:53

I found The Visit quite disturbing, one of those ones where I'd get flash backs in the night of certain scenes! And in typical M Night Shyamalan style you're not quite sure if it's supernatural or what's going on until the end. (My husband thought it was stupid just to add, but I'm a huge MNS fan).

ConsuelaHammock · 30/04/2023 22:27

Horror films are my favourite genre. I love The Descent and all the Saw movies.
Wolf creek is very disturbing. I watched the series too. I wouldn’t recommend it tbh.
There’s one scene in The House on the Left which still haunts me and I’m really not easily scared. It was just so brutal.
I liked The Quiet Place movies. Martyrs is horrible.

ConsuelaHammock · 30/04/2023 22:29

There’s a movie called Shutter. Had to correct that from Shitter- thanks autocorrect!
I remember it being creepy.
