Just as the subject says, I’ve watched nearly all of them on Netflix. Really could do with some more suggestions. Thank you 😊

Host is great! Short and snappy, and really captured the feel of the pandemic!

Jonsnowsghost · 28/04/2023 23:14

The Eye (original not the American remake) the scene in the lift is terrifying!

Myotis · 28/04/2023 23:22

Not a film but have you watched kingdom on Netflix if you have watched Train to Bhusan? It’s great. Also- the orphanage. Guillermo del Toro - gives me the chills.

Snowontheroof · 28/04/2023 23:57

The Shining - I have seen it once - could never watch it again.

If you don't mind comedy horror, have you ever seen Peter Jackson's (Lord of the Rings director) early films, eg. Bad Taste?

For a long time “Berberian sound studio” topped my list of worst “horror” I’d ever seen. Men, may have knocked it off it’s spot! That’s how much I hated it 😂

I love both of these!

StupidFaces · 29/04/2023 06:16

Well I watched Eden Lake last night … what a frustrating film!!

Why was the bloke so bloody insistent on getting into a “beef” with the kids?

Everytime they got away they decided to stop and faff somewhere!

When they first went in it was a short drive in yet later on it’s like a giant forest with seemingly no way out?!

That woman! It’s like she went out of her way to be as noisy as possible everytime she was meant to be hiding!

I didn’t find it scary. Just frustrating. I’ll try some of the others on this list

Yes me too!

LatteOneShotplease · 29/04/2023 11:28

@StupidFaces I agree. Eden Lake is not horror in it's truest sense - but there is a lot of tension and very many frustrating moments. I don't like it as a film - but I do like Michael Fassbender. I think the character thought that the kids would respect him - but the group mentality and probably their home lives gave them a sense of power, and coupled with insolence, respect for r fear of people older them them just didn't come into it!
(Of course it backfired on at least one of them, and then backfired again on the woman.)
I think that real horror usually has some sense of detachment from reality in it (thank God) - whereas Eden Lake felt as though we are one step or wrong word from that happening in everyday life.
(Hmm - maybe that actually IS horror.?)

Sorry if this has already been said, but the original Thai version of the film 'Shutter'.

I don't think it's on Netflix though...

QueenBitch666 · 29/04/2023 12:14

Marvellous thread! 👌
A few of my favourites...
The Cell
The Exorcist
The Vanishing ( original Dutch film not the shit remake ) )
The Woman in Black ( original BBC production ) the stage show is amazing btw!
Ringu and The Ring
Ju-On and The Grudge
( both decent remakes )
Antichrist ( not for the faint hearted )
Audition ( ditto )
The Blair Witch Project
Sinister
Insidious
The Chaser ( Korean )
Hellraiser

Scared me so much would never watch again 😳

Exorcist 3 😳 💩

Frenzy ( Hitchcock ) 😳

Sleepy Hollow 😳

Update on The Host, I really liked that film. Was quite jumpy & had a few good jump scares! I’ll watch another tonight 😂

Not sure if these have been mentioned but I'm a big fan of French horror such as Martyrs, High Tension, and Climax. The latter is not a traditional horror movie, more avant garde, but really deserves a mention for its captivating cinematography and killer soundtrack.

TheFireflies · 29/04/2023 13:28

One Cut Of The Dead is worth a watch, albeit not particularly scary. It’s very well done.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 29/04/2023 13:29

Has anyone mentioned Them (2006)? What people here were saying about Eden Lake sounded familiar, but it's 'Them' that the decriptions reminded me of.

Bleak, very bleak.

EmpressSoleil · 29/04/2023 13:58

A film that has a similar message to "men" but (imo) did it way way better is, "run sweetheart run". I think it's still on prime. You see very little violence but what you don't see is almost more scary.

HowDid · 29/04/2023 14:17

Not probably true "horror" but I really liked The Cube which is fantasic film. It's more get in your head, analyse and think about afterwards than either jump scare or gorey ( some minor gore as I recall).

Also Hitchcock's An Unlocked Window is good in a more creepy horror way.

It was remade in colour in 1985.

There's a film of Stephen King's Salems Lot from the 1970s that's surprisingly scary.

TheFireflies · 29/04/2023 15:28

GrandTheftWalrus · 27/04/2023 23:30

Yeah the nutty putty caves. I was reading a buzzfeed or similar article and it mentioned it.

Yeah he thought he was going down the birth canal tunnel and it was a different one if I remember correctly?

They said he eventually died of cardiac arrest as the pulleys they'd put in for him didn't work.

I’ve bookmarked a number of movies thanks to this thread, but I can confidently state that none of them will be as terrifying and upsetting as the articles I’ve just read about what happened to this poor man.

LobsterBiscuit · 29/04/2023 15:29

Just spent ages looking for this thread and it's popped up in active. I liked Fall and The Grudge

Is that the Frnech film? Black and white? If so I enjoyed it

It's watching that (I was about 15) which put me off horror films! Not watched one since!

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 29/04/2023 15:47

Salem’s Lot and the TV version of It terrified me at the time.
