Drinking before school pick up

Is it wrong?
Have you ever done it?

I live abroad and summer is approaching, it’s hot, tourists are here, beautiful days at the beach, lunches out, cocktails etc
Dd started school in September and I started back working part time, including some weekends, it’s all busy and rushed and I’ve worked it so I can have a Friday off.
A couple of friends suggested we started a weekly yoga class and then go for lunch and a glass of something/cocktail
Would this be weird? To then go to school pick up? I’d walk as live very nearby.
Just feel weird about it, getting paranoid a teacher would smell my breath or something 🙈
I would not be drunk obviously.
It just wasn’t the same in the U.K. but it’s v different here.
Aibu to feel weird about it?

A glass of wine over Friday lunch socially or a weekday business lunch is fine as long as you're not driving to pick up the kids.

Hamsterwheel21 · 26/04/2023 21:16

Sounds like a lovely Friday afternoon. As long as you’re not drunk and know your limits, you’re not driving so go enjoy!

onepieceoflollipop · 26/04/2023 21:17

I work shifts so have occasionally done similar
it just means you are having your weekend on a different day
It’s the same as having a glass of wine or two with Sunday lunch or Saturday afternoon tea with Prosecco

GraysPapaya · 26/04/2023 21:17

I can't see an issue with this! I'm quite jealous of your Friday to be honest, yoga and a cocktail in the sun!

CharlotteUnaNatalieThompson · 26/04/2023 21:17

I did this a few times when my son's were in school. Totally fine as long as you're not pissed and driving

ILikePizzas · 26/04/2023 21:33

I think there is a spectrum between tee-total and turning up in slippers and onesie after a day of drinking neat gin on the sofa and commenting on Mumsnet.................

BluebellBlueballs · 26/04/2023 21:35

So long as you're not slurring your words or stumbling about I'm sure you'll be fine...

Are you sure you aren’t insinuating it’s fine to get sloshed if you are middle class over a posh lunch but disgusting if you are skint and having a few cans/cheap gin … alcohol is alcohol a however you dress it up

Killerqueef · 26/04/2023 21:49

If you’re not drunk and not driving then I don’t see the problem

Reluctantadult · 26/04/2023 21:50

Sounds amazing. Where do you live 🤔😁

I thought I'd made a pretty innocent comment, but I see I have attracted the Mumsnet "I take a sip of sherry at Christmas then birch myself" brigade. Blimey. Some people are just desperate to take offence, aren't you?

strawberryfluff · 26/04/2023 21:51

I wouldn't because I really can't handle my drink and one drink would render me useless as supervising my child.

Sissynova · 26/04/2023 21:54

Total non issue imo. DH and I regularly take a Friday afternoon off to go out for a nice lunch and have a glass of wine or two then head back to do nursery pick up.

🤣within about 5 posts too

”sounds like you could have an alcohol problem, OP”

Offthexmaslist · 26/04/2023 21:55

Goodness me is MN unclenching ?? Is it not the mantra that any consumption of alcohol beyond a small glass of Prosecco at Christmas... is tantamount to a life forever lost to alcoholism and child neglect . ?
A COCKTAIL?
ON A FRIDAY LUNCHTIME ?
BEFORE PICKING UP SOLE CHARGE OF KIDS ?

Give your head a wobble and report yourself to social services at once .

onepieceoflollipop · 26/04/2023 21:55

I read Pizzas comment as referring to quantity I.e. one or two drinks fine (even if it’s cheap!), totally sloshed not fine (even if it’s posh cocktails!)

EllieM27 · 26/04/2023 21:57

I voted YABU because I think it’s fine but looking at the results was I supposed to vote YANBU if I think it’s fine? 🤔

Anyway, it’s fine. Few things are better than a mojito on a summer afternoon!

😁 exactly my thoughts. This is a fickle, fickle place.

OP - it sounds lovely! I'm sure, as PP have said, as long as you don't turn up hammered, it will be fine. Enjoy!

It’s because she is abroad. It’s culture, innit

Yellowdays · 26/04/2023 22:06

I can't imagine doing it. I'd never relax enough to enjoy it if I knew I had kids to contend with afterwards.

Kablea · 26/04/2023 22:07

What?! I wouldn’t give this a second thought? One of our favourite things to do is to take a day off work (when the child is in nursery), go out and do all the things we can’t (galleries, leisurely shopping, then a slap up lunch and share a bottle of wine, maybe even have a digestive). I didn’t realise this was a prisonable offence?

Thank you. It was. I didn't have class (or class hate) in mind when I wrote that comment.

ziggiestardust · 26/04/2023 22:08

That sounds lovely OP. Go and enjoy yourself!

NamelessNancy · 26/04/2023 22:19

"Abroad" is a big and varied place. I can't see anything wrong with it tbh as not driving but really how it is interpreted depends on the specifics of the culture wherever you are OP. Middle east - probably not a great idea, Mediterranean Europe probably perfectly Ok. From what you've said I think it probably does fit in with local culture so no problem.
