to be alarmed that more and more places are allowing dogs?

Just went to Wilko recently who had a sign up saying all dogs welcome. Went to a bistro and they allowed dogs too. Had lunch listening to small yappy dogs.

Since when did it become acceptable to allow dogs into shops and food places?

A question to some dog owners why is it acceptable to unleash and allow them jump up on strangers? It's not acceptable from any other animal. I don't want a random dog climbing on me while I'm running. If your dog has shit recall leash it .

Totally agree. The amount of times on a walk I hear “it’s ok, he’s only being friendly” whilst a huge dog almost knocks over my kids is ridiculous.

I understand your dog is being friendly, but we don’t want any dog friends right now!

I stopped going to a local cafe once this started happening, and so did many other people. They were just left with a few dog owners and eventually folded.

Unlikely that their business folded because they accepted dogs - if it didn't work for them, surely they'd have changed their policy.

Dulra · 26/04/2023 14:52

I remember being in France about 20 years ago and being pretty shocked at the amount of dogs in restaurants and cafes sitting on owners laps, licking food off the table and running around I thought it was disgusting then and think it's disgusting now. Each to their own though all I want is restaurant/ cafe owners to be clear that they allow dogs so I know to go elsewhere

LaMaG · 26/04/2023 14:53

I am from Rep of Ireland and visit family in UK frequently and its one of the biggest cultural differences i can see. I cannot get over seeing dogs everywhere in the UK. Here they are not allowed anywhere indoors - not shops, public transport or cafes/ restaurants. There may be some dog friendly places I don't know of but generally they are kept at home.

MNHQ - time for a separate section for the rabid dog haters please.

Oh, yes please.

FeltedDogs · 26/04/2023 14:57

I have dogs, I love dogs and if I lived in the UK I would no doubt enjoy an occasional lunch out with them. But, what I find galling is the smug show off way people are with their dogs, like performance pfb parents and almost dare anyone not to want a smelly muddy red setter sitting on your feet. My dogs are happy at home which is just as well because it's not like that where I live although I can recommend a Mulberry Bayswater for taking a chihuahua on the metro to the vet undetected 😀

If you're scared of bacteria how can you even leave the house? There's bacteria everywhere. YOU shed dried skin, hair and maybe even drool! 😂

@leilani83
@Redebs

Sorry to mention this, but so do the people preparing and serving your food
😂😱

AlwaysGinPlease · 26/04/2023 15:01

@Runaway0

These dogs aren't just taking themselves off to cafes and shops. They're with their human/s. Therefore that human has as much right as any other human to be there.

Honestly, dogs have been allowed in so many places for so long . Go elsewhere!

AlwaysGinPlease · 26/04/2023 15:05

@Neededanewuserhandle good idea! They can all froth over there together as they clearly have nothing better to do and we can hide the topic!

God not another dog thread!

These questions have already been asked - it’s been acceptable for quite some time to let dogs in shops/cafe/restaurants etc….

It's not acceptable to me

DyslexicPoster · 26/04/2023 15:09

I think there's still plenty of places to eat that don't allow dogs. My friend lives near a dog friendly cafe and there are always dogs barking, yapping and lunging aggressively at other dogs in there. If my friend didn't suggest I'd never go in there. People get extremely upset on here about badly behaved kids in public, but kids needs to leave the house under the age of 18. If they didn't go to adult spaces as kids how will anyone grow up to wipe your bum when you get dementia and live in a care home. Kids need to interact with the world and learn. But they are less tolerated in the ul. In the pandemic mn was saying leave your kids locked in the car rather than a single mum take them into a shop. If it was a dog peoplecwould smash the car windows. Kids in a hot car was totally fine. MN is batshit. Always has been.

Apparently 27% of households on the uk have a dog. It’s probably more in some parts of the country. It’s a huge section of the market to cut out.

Dogs are allowed in most cafes near me and it’s really rare that I’ve seen them cause a nuisance.

Exactly this, people wanting dog free will need to spend the ££ to counteract the loss of income from not allowing dogs.
It's purely financial, and businesses need to respond to what provides profits.

There are adult only hotels, campsites etc.. love the campsites because there is a market for them. Not everyone wants unhygienic, snotty, germy kids around them either..😉

AlwaysGinPlease · 26/04/2023 15:09

@BruceAndNosh well luckily for everyone else what you think is a acceptable is irrelevant. Especially dog friendly business owners.

ChestermanBeach · 26/04/2023 15:11

BruceAndNosh · 26/04/2023 15:08

If the shops/cafes/restaurant are ok with it, because they’re making money from it, then your opinion is irrelevant. 🤣

nochangeever · 26/04/2023 15:13

YANBU. After skirting round three piles of dog shit today, I wish ALL dogs and their owners to Hades.

I don't give a shit about #NADALT, use the terror laws to fine the shit out of dog owners.

RJnomore1 · 26/04/2023 15:14

It’s really not great when you have a family full of dog allergies.

Also I love dogs but obviously can’t have one in the house due to said allergies and I hate to tell you all this, but however lovely your dogs are they smell. I assume it’s nose blindness that you get used to the smell, and some are worse than others I presume due to breed/ fur type but they do.

I do live meeting a nice, relaxed dog who I am allowed to fuss a bit when I am out so I am contradicting myself though 😁 if your poor dog is a wee uncontrollable stress ball ffs think about it first though will you!

Runaway0 · 26/04/2023 14:46

Some people have been bitten and attacked by dogs so dont like them. Humans have priority over dogs in human spaces.

So what's an appropriate dog space where they get priority?

Princesspeach31 · 26/04/2023 15:14

Come to Italy! Dogs are allowed everywhere (including pharmacies and shopping centres) and it’s wonderful. I’ve never seen any problems with dogs making a mess or being noisy in cafes etc because owners are generally considerate.

DarkForces · 26/04/2023 15:14

oh yay. Another dog thread. I'm unclear how it's entitled to take my dog places they're allowed. I only go to places that state they are dog friendly and check if there's specific tables/areas they'd prefer my to use.
My pup loves going to a cafe. They had a special dog menu and blankets the last place we ate. She was a paying customer!

mytitshaveshrunk · 26/04/2023 15:15

I adore dogs, I've had several myself. BUT I don't much care for entitled dog owners. Why are dogs no longer allowed to just be left at home?

Don't dog owners belong in the grassy knoll of the Dog House section? Leave AIBU to us who have to skirt around dog shit.

Deathraystare · 26/04/2023 15:16

I watched a documentary on either John Lewis or Peter Jones and was surprised to see a woman and her dog in the store. The dog proceeded to do a shit and the owner walked off without a worry and a poor member of staff had to clean it up. Should have rubbed the owner's nose in it!!!

MagpieSong · 26/04/2023 15:16

Plenty of places that do here as well as even more that don’t (I’m in west wales so lots of countryside places that cater for dog walkers or people bringing their dog on holiday). Different places need to cater for both people who can’t be/don’t want to be around dogs and dog lovers imo. I don’t really understand the issue, people who don’t like dogs can go to places where they aren’t allowed and people who do bring the dog can go where they are. However, perhaps there’s suddenly lots of areas with only dog friendly places? I can’t imagine that though, even our local botanical gardens (mainly outside) only allow them on a specific day on a lead and not in the inside areas.

I do appreciate how difficult it must be for some with very serious allergies, but it is for anyone with a disability - lots of forward planning etc. I know with my husband’s mobility issues there’s plenty of phoning ahead and so on to check if the location will work for us.

Mumsnet is batshit, I agree.

I rarely see/hear anyone in real life who has an issue with dogs or kids. People just get on with their life. When you come across one of these nutty people who are vocal about their dislike of dogs or kids and they’re moaning about it, most people roll their eyes or smirk because those types come across as complete weirdos.

Because if she's out with us I don't have to watch the clock. We often build in a cafe as part of a weekend walk and travel a bit further away. And because she's a member of the family and I adore her.
