To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

Might have crossed the dessert a bit quicker on a triumph.

But has made me question whether Jesus’s “triumphal entry” into Jerusalem was actually on the back of a Donkey.

It was absolutely on a bonneville with Mary clinging to the back yelling at him to slow down 😂

Read about the first 5 replies, got annoyed with all the rudeness.

Op I don’t think your request is unreasonable, however MN is an adult space and people will express themselves in different ways depending on social/cultural/religious norms. And they’re entitled to.

You can’t expect people to subscribe to your belief system or be constantly conscious of it.

Sorry again that people have been so rude and disregarded your feelings.

tonyele · 25/04/2023 23:31

Out of curiosity, would a Muslim find the taking of Jesus' name in vain offensive, because he is in the Quran too as the Prophet Jesus rather than the Son of God.

I agree with you OP.
There are no consequences at all for using a name linked to a major word religion.
Despite what others have posted I struggle to suspend my disbelief that they would use names sacred to other works religions.
Anyone recall the news story of an expat English teacher in a Moslem country who named the class teddy after a prophet at the behest of her young students. Immediate trial and sentencing.

Do you think that was a just and proportionate response?
Are you aiming for that here?
Should we stone people too? Being back corporal punishment? Death penalty?
It is not a race to the bottom.

Seeleyboo · 25/04/2023 23:33

Jesus fucking christ. Muhammad fucking prophet. Is that better. Seriously OP if this is all, you have to worry about these days. I admire you.

littlefirecar · 25/04/2023 23:36

I use oh my god as its so common , never really thought about it tbh

But I don't use Jesus christ or flying mohamed or lord Ganesha etc. Because as someone who is non-religious none of these hold any importance to me.

I think the whole point of swearing is saying something slightly risqué and they don't really mean anything to me

The only person I know who uses Jesus christ as a way to express frustration is also the only Christian I know well 😂

P.s what do you think about things like restaurants called golden Buddha etc? Or the many non Hindu practitioners of yoga (originally a spiritual practice) ?

My Muslim friend told me she was out at a works event and someone kept saying Jesus Christ as a swear word and she found it offensive. I'm not a Muslim though but she told me that she found it really distasteful and crude.

MonsterFiesta · 25/04/2023 23:37

I think God has to take the blame, OP.

God is our all-powerful, all-knowing creator, so when he made the world (in the very specific way that he did), he knew every action that every human being would ever make, including me exclaiming ‘Jesus Christ’ every time I happen to.

If he didn’t want me to do that, he would have made me differently, but he didn’t, so you can take it up with him.

Are those are the 'consequences' that you want - immediate trial and sentencing?

So you say you think it's bad there are no consequences to using 'Jesus Christ' / 'oh my god' etc and then continue to raise an horrific story of someone being killed in another country for doing the equivalent, using language considered blasphemous.

Which leads me to ask... do you think they were right to do that or something? Only I'm unsure why you'd mention such an awful punishment after saying you think it's wrong there are no repercussions for doing the equivalent here.

What repercussions would you like there to be?

Sounds like you would prefer it if we reverted to a religious dictatorship?

Do you not enjoy living in a modern country with freedom of expression?

Agree Christianity isn't protected in the way other religions often are, especially Islam.

Its nothing to do with Islam being more protected (it really isn't when we've had recent PMs who are blatant Islamaphobes and that not be an issue). If ex Muslims take their "lords name in vain" thats up to them. It's not Muslim or Jewish people that are going round saying "Jesus Christ" its people who were brought up Christian or around Christian ideology and if most of your friends are Christian or ex Christian you're going to hear alot more Jesus Christs than other religious deities.

Also the reason some people are slightly more sensitive to Islamaphobia than Christianphobia(?) is that there's a insidious undercurrent of racist demographic in this country (some of which have political power) that would genuinely see every Muslim in this country deported to Rwanda that your average Christian just isn't subjected to.

AliceMcK · 25/04/2023 23:43

Can’t say I’ve seen it much on MN, but in my “devout” catholic family it’s a daily occurrence “Jesus, Mary and Holy St Joseph” was my Nans favourite along with all women who conceive out of wedlock being scabby arsed whores.

Personally I love all the praise to god during every child in a religious families conception 😆

AskMeMore · 25/04/2023 23:43

Most people who say Jesus Christ are like me, brought up as Christians. I would not say Mohammed, as it means nothing to me.

Stressedafff · 25/04/2023 23:46

It’s just a word. I don’t think Jesus himself is that offended, I’ve never heard of anyone being struck by lighting after blaspheming

Any particular reason for this image?

Yes…in theory but I don’t think it would get as much of a reaction if one were to go around trying to actively bait Muslims with various profanities

DiscoBeat · 25/04/2023 23:51

* sWhy do you think "bloody" is a swear -word, out of interest?

At Catholic school in the early nineties, we were told it was a contraction of By Our Lady, meaning Mary. Not sure that's actually true.

Ah so that's how a Bloody Mary got its name.
Damn, I fancy one now!

Skyfairyonascooter · 25/04/2023 23:53

Do I know you @mrlistersgelfbride ?

I picked up “Christ on a Bike” from a friend whilst driving, but also use “Buddha on a Bicycle” or “Mohammed on a Moped” in equal measure because it amuses me to think of great deities in their own commuter hell.

After this thread, “Sky Fairy on a Scooter” will be added to the rotation.

vdbfamily · 25/04/2023 23:58

I came in this thread to say that I hate people using Jesus Christ as an expletive as someone who follows Him.It makes me inwardly wince. But now having read the thread I have decided that every time His name is mentioned out loud is a bonus so I will ignore the intent and celebrate the fact that he is getting a mention.

Bloody Mary was the daughter of Henry VIII.

But people don't. Thats my point. It wouldn't be accepted. And rightly so.

They do.

"Wallahi" is commonly used by younger people in Britain, especially London and especially areas which have had a lot of Muslim, especially Somali, immigrants.

It means "I swear to Allah." It is used colloquially as an Express meaning the same as what 90s kids would have said "swear down" or "swear on my life."

CurlewKate · 26/04/2023 00:07

There appear to be people on here who wish we lived in an authoritarian Christian state. Which is, frankly, bizarre.

Youdoyoubabe · 26/04/2023 00:09

And what does this one the Irish say on the telly mean ' Jesus Mary Mother of God'.

Heard frequently on The Derry Girls...... but I find it confusing as it doesn't match with my albeit limited understanding of the bible story.

weebleswobblebuttheydontfalldown · 26/04/2023 00:15

I'm a wavering Christian but it's posts like this that remind me why I stopped going to church and also remind me of the awful judgy - type fear of saying the wrong thing while my DC were at a C of E school. I used to feel SO much stress about watching everything I said while in these places. This is in contrast to the total acceptance when I worked at a Christian charity hospital- the chaplains were amazing people and did not judge once. It restored my faith a bit, literally. I feel posts like this are 'missing the point' and don't display behaviors I feel are Christian, in the wider sense.
