To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

Where you are going wrong is thinking that because you are offended, others should change their behaviour. It's a common issue in modern society sadly. If we all changed our speech because someone somewhere might be offended then we'd run out of words.

I'll carry on as I am thank you, blaspheming away as I see fit.

Yep Paul was causing trouble and division from the get go. The best source for any Christian is the Gospel of Thomas.

Not to be confused with the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, in which Jesus is at times not so much the Messiah as a very naughty boy. Grin

I don't believe in your sky fairy, or anyone else's. Culturally, I am predisposed to blaspheme using the lead religion in my country and the one to which my pare ta attempted to indoctrinate me. I will use whatever language I please, with no guilt. Ta.

How patronizing. I hope you’re this outspoken about other religions.

OldFan · 25/04/2023 23:05

@Sortyourlifeout As Christians, we live in The World and a lot of the world is like that.

For myself, I'm new to the faith and find it's really easy to swear or take the Lord's name in vain in life- it's just how we communicate. (It is changeable though.)

Especially on a board like this or Relationships where there is a lot of understandable shock, horror, anger at behaviour etc.

There is a lot of anger, anti marriage and very secular values on MN. It's not the best place for a Christian really, unless you have kids and stick to the boards about childrearing maybe.

I recommend watching Youtubes for interesting Christian content.

Absolutely not, he did bring the two children he killed back to life though if I remember correctly 😂.

Which book is ‘Christ on a bike’ in? 😁

That comes under:

“And lo, the roar of Moses' Triumph was heard throughout Israel"
😂

You're in luck. I absolutely am. People can practice however they like, but when it impinges on others and when their children are given no choice it's incredibly problematic

Agree Christianity isn't protected in the way other religions often are, especially Islam.

I would love a video posted by big bollocks who call Jesus a sky fairy, going to a Mosque and calling Muhammad a sky fairy.

Persuaderama · 25/04/2023 22:34

My dad says 'Jesus wept' and I don't like it, or any use of 'Jesus' as a negative exclamation because he was a real person and it's disrespectful

Is this a joke? You’re worried about offending a carpenter from 2000 odd years ago? Jesus Christ on a bike etc etc etc

No, not worried about offending him... I wouldn't use any individual's name as an expletive, dead or alive. If you dropped down dead in the street and a passer-by gave your body a kick it wouldn't make any difference to you, but it would be an unpleasant thing to do and would probably come across as personal to onlookers, even if it was nothing to do with you, but merely said passer-by having a bad day. See what I mean?

orangegato · 25/04/2023 20:39

Offence is taken, not given.

Thissss.

And how can you take offence on behalf of someone who does not and did not exist 😩

maddy68 · 25/04/2023 23:12

Jesus. Are you looking for things to get offended about? I use the c word frequently.

I'm a potty mouth.

Hi, big bollocks here. What an odd thing to say. I wouldn't go to a church and talk about sky fairies either.
I am fairly quietly atheist, unless and until it comes up, like here. Then I tell people who are easily offended to grow up and remind them that their emotional crutches are no longer as state protected as they used to be.

I think you’d just get a bunch of puzzled Muslims to be honest, because regardless of if you see Muhammad as a prophet or not, he very much existed as a person. There is way more evidence that he existed than Jesus existed for instance

Ihavehadenoughalready · 25/04/2023 23:17

So I suppose "Jesus Frickin' Christ" would be frowned upon? I use that quite a bit.

Goodread1 · 25/04/2023 23:18

Sky fairy

i like that,

but did you know fairies sprite people are for real don't you know
Faeries sprites prefer tranquil untainted green moss and foliage ect

So how do you not know Jesus Christ Superstar is not real then,?,

Most people are referring to God as a sky fairy, not Jesus (I know they are one and the same but thats not the point those posters are making or you with your comparison to Mohamed)

Given the Christian God and the Islamic God are the same God then anyone referring to God as the sky fairy are referring to the Muslim God as a sky fairy

Additonally you seem to be implying that someone who refers to God as a sky fairy isnt brave enough to go into a mosque and say that. But its not like the posters on here are claiming to go into Churches to say it so why should they go into a Mosque

There is a huge difference between saying something on a forum which is international and therefore has people of all faiths and no faiths, and someone going into a place of worship to say something

You seem to be digging really hard to prove that Christianity isnt protected like Islam but your comparisons make no sense

SummerLovingDays · 25/04/2023 23:21

labamba007 · 25/04/2023 21:01

I'm assuming the reason people don't say 'oh my Muhammad' is because the UK's dominant religion is Christianity? Not some conspiracy to single out Christians.

It depends what part of the UK you live in.

Waitymatey · 25/04/2023 23:25

I agree with you OP.
There are no consequences at all for using a name linked to a major word religion.
Despite what others have posted I struggle to suspend my disbelief that they would use names sacred to other works religions.
Anyone recall the news story of an expat English teacher in a Moslem country who named the class teddy after a prophet at the behest of her young students. Immediate trial and sentencing.

tonyele · 25/04/2023 23:26

I have given this thought before this thread, as a tradesman I do end up saying Jesus / Jesus Wept, but then I consider that Jesus was a Chippy, so wouldn't be too offended if we do a good job.

Might have crossed the dessert a bit quicker on a triumph.

But has made me question whether Jesus’s “triumphal entry” into Jerusalem was actually on the back of a Donkey.

Kvetching · 25/04/2023 23:28

I say ‘Jesus Christ’ or a variation of it, a LOT. It’s one of my favourites and immensely satisfying.

I was brought up a strict Catholic by devout Irish parents. I’m not remotely religious, but I am pleased that all of those in my family that do believe have a very relaxed view on such things. They swear and take holy names in vain on a daily basis. One can be too precious.

a1poshpaws · 25/04/2023 23:29

I believe very strongly in God and in Jesus although I'm vehemently against organised religion because of the damage it's caused historically and continues to cause today.

The God and Jesus) whom I talk to every day is not, in my opinion, an old stick-in-the-mud who takes Himself so seriously that he doesn't enjoy a joke (where else would we get our sense of humour and our giggles at the ridiculous from?) and who doesn't get frustrated and angry at the choices made by so many to whom he gave free will.

I honestly wouldn't be one bit surprised if God also swears! It's been scientifically proven that swearing - including what you see as blasphemy - can be very beneficial. (have a read of this article, one of many you can google if it interests you) Frankly, we do give a damn: improving patient outcomes with swearing - PMC (nih.gov)

I came to my relationship with God as an adult also, and I've never been able to prevent myself from saying e.g., Jesus suffering Christ, God almighty etc. I'm not going to beat myself up about that or resent others saying it. It's almost never said with the intention of insulting Jesus or God, and if it is - frankly that's a private matter between God and the person saying it.

You're going to have to toughen up and be more tolerant or you'll be like the old fire and brimstone preachers who tried so hard to shove their beliefs down other people's throats that instead of leading them to meet God for themselves, they utterly alienated people and caused them to reject the very idea of God.

Frankly, we do give a damn: improving patient outcomes with swearing

Words can change the way a patient thinks, feels, and performs. Swearing, or uttering a word that is considered taboo, is an often-ignored part of our language, even though over 50% of the population swears “sometimes” or “often”. ...

WilsonMilson · 25/04/2023 23:29

You’d not like me.

I’m a Christian, but I’m forever Jesus Christ’ing all over the place, not to mention Christ on a bike, for the love of God, oh my God, dear God, God almighty, for God’s sake, Jesus fucking Christ….oh it’s wild stuff with me. Then there’s Jesus H fucking Christ on a bike if I’m particularly irked, or plain old fucking Jesus. Sprinkle in some Holy Mother of God, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey of course couldn’t forget that one.

I basically blaspheme my way through life. I’d like to think God doesn’t mind, I’m sure he’s had a few moments himself.
