To ask the fitters to stop fitting my floor today

So this situation is absolutely ridiculous and I am perfectly aware that my pregnancy hormones are clouding my judgement here and I'm in an incredibly fortunate position, but I could really be doing with some urgent WWYD advice as I am so stressed over this. I am 33 weeks pregnant and have moved into a complete renovation project (not ideal I realise!). The last few weeks since I got the keys I've had to make a lot of quick (expensive) decisions re the design of the house to allow me to get in to it before the baby's born. I'd thought that would be really fun and exciting, but I'm actually really starting to feel pretty stressed over the whole thing and no longer trust my own judgement. I'm becoming quite teary and doubting every decision I make. One of the major outlays has been flooring. It accounts for a significant lump sum of the budget and the fitters started work yesterday and will complete today. As soon as I saw the flooring down it looked completely different from I had thought it would from when I saw it in the shop. I did immediately mention this to the fitters but they assured me it was the correct one. I'm not blaming anyone else here but me, as I do appreciate flooring looks different in natural/ artificial light etc but I immediately hated it. It really looks nothing like I thought it would. They are about halfway done. Should I call the shop and ask them to stop and at least try to salvage some of the unused packets of flooring? (It's herringbone design and there's a LOT of it as the floor space is massive) or should I let them finish and suck it up and not lose thousands of £?) I'm so angry at myself for making the wrong choice and of course I'm not suggesting that I don't pay for the flooring or wiggle out of fitting fees etc. I also realise this is causing me way more distress than it should- my hormones are all over the place.

This is what they've used- does seem to be a cheaper alternative

Wait, so i thought that you said the boxes had no branding on them, but in fact they explicitly say a different brand - Kronotex or something? Surely in that case it is clear ly not the right stuff?

CaroleSinger · 25/04/2023 07:08

I guess this is what is meant by the term 1st world problems?

Ncfgjdo · 25/04/2023 07:09

@random789 sorry I meant it didn't say Ravello Belstaff etc- I'm not actually sleeping at the house just now until the initial works are done and didn't realise the boxes were in the background of a picture to check.

I've looked online and the photo of the flooring your chose on the Tapi website, the Ravello one, is the same as a Kronotex Silver Oak photo on a different retailer's website. That said, Tapi are charging £39.99 psm and it appears it is available much cheaper - £22.99 is the lowest price I've seen.

It's quite possibly been rebranded or available at different prices for retail and trade. If you had samples in your previous house then the lighting may well be different in the new one and bringing out the grey tones. Fwiw it looks good, but if you're not happy speak to the shop.

Indeed- which I think I quite clearly acknowledge in my original post.

Well kronotex is available at multiple places online for £25 a SQM. Ravello seems to be £40 in tapi. Is that what you paid?

I'd be complaining that it's not the right product rather than the colour. Get screenshots so you are less easily dismissed as the mad pregnant woman going on about colour.

ladyofshertonabbas · 25/04/2023 07:12

If you Google ravello belstaff you get a pic of silver flooring, so I guess they’ve not made a mistake. They might take pity on you, if you explain you don’t like it.

GretaGood · 25/04/2023 07:12

Where is teh sample you have photos of - back in the shop?

It does look different.

It seems companies can sell a different brand (Kronotex) if they want to without declaring that. Kronotex is cheaper than your price annoyingly if you look online.

I would find out the cost of cancelling the order. I might also later mention that I can get it cheaper under Kronotex .

How easy is it to lift.

Can you live with a rough floor - you can always buy a cheap rug or two.

How long might you live in the house? if it is decades I might cancel.

TwoShades1 · 25/04/2023 06:25

I would confirm that the flooring you order is the one being laid. If it is, then put the sample on the floor and see if they match. If they don’t you can take a photo and go back to the store to show that the sample you ordered from and your floor are different. Assuming it’s the correct flooring and same and sample I would just leave it. It will look quite different in different lighting too.

This. And if it’s not the same ….. perhaps there is an innocent explanation…

In any case if there has been an error I would want the floor I chose !

Yes I’m confused too.

Kronotex and Ravello are two separate brands of flooring so something seems amiss here.

OP if those boxes are what they’re laying and your order is definitely for Ravello, you should get onto them today, looking at prices online there is quite a different per M2. Kronotex also have a colour called silver oak.

Christy135 · 25/04/2023 07:14

It looks gorgeous and not grey to my eye. Don’t cancel.

Complain, complain, complain. That is not what you've paid for. CFs!

Ellmau · 25/04/2023 07:14

I was going to say I thought you would be committed to the £££ regardless, but having RTFT it does look they've supplied a different brand.

It may be the desired choice (which you paid for!) is out of stock, but they should have informed you of any substitution.

Changeling78 · 25/04/2023 07:14

I would firstly double check the have used the correct brand/colour flooring and if they had I would continue with it. It looks beautiful and you never get the full effect until everything is back in place.

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/04/2023 07:14

I’ve googled the 2 brands and these are the pics I found of what I think you ordered and what they’re laying. Kronotex is half the price.

You are being ripped off if you’re paying £39.99 or similar per square metre. It does, however, look a similar colour.

Can you high tale it down to the shop this morning with a box and a piece of the laminate?

If you’re paying the full whack and you’re getting a different product and you don’t like the colour even if similar, you could even ask for a relay with a change of colour.

I prefer the one you've got than the one you were aiming for! But either way, I'd push on through now. Having a laid floor is way better than no floor, and means you can worry about it in a couple of years when you've got more headspace.

I was about to say the same - prefer the one fitted. However, we got a similar light flooring to the one fitted - but after 2 years, now looks like your sample. Is it a natural flooring - if so might weather and might of happened to the sample if in the shop long enough.

I guess this is what is meant by, being a prick?

silverlentils · 25/04/2023 07:17

When I had my kitchen floor laid I obsessed over the colour and it took me two days to decide on a grout colour. I am very particular on colour shades so I completely get where you are coming from.

However I think it looks lovely and once furniture is in and there is less floor showing, you won't notice it so much....it will just be a (lovely) floor.

Also depending on the colour of your furnishings and walls you can bring out warmer tones in the floor. And once it is exposed to light it will change a little.

However the issue seems to be whether they have supplied and fitted what you chose and paid for, I hope you get that sorted.

FurAndFeathers · 25/04/2023 07:18

Ncfgjdo · 25/04/2023 06:20

Yes but it just says 'Ravello' with the colour as 'Belstaff' and the box seems to be unbranded (it just says silver herringbone)

It sounds like it’s the wrong floor

GretaGood · 25/04/2023 07:18

Can I say that the warm brown colour you wanted will look a much stronger brown once down over a large area - a smudgy grey might turn out to be more liveable with.

StoppinBy · 25/04/2023 07:20

If I was charged for the more expensive product when a cheaper one was laid I would be complaining and expect a refund of at least the price difference if the quality was similar.

If it was a lesser quality, I'd expect the lesser product replaced with the one I ordered and I'd be paying no more than the original quote price.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 25/04/2023 07:21

(Have not RTFT, but scanned…)

Check the reference number on your sample photograph against what they’re laying. If they don’t match then you’re not getting the goods you’ve paid for.

If they’re different or the fitters have used an alternative manufacturer, then you have cause to complain.

Can you move out for a few weeks after the baby is born if it comes to it?

ssd · 25/04/2023 07:21

@Ncfgjdo , honestly your flooring looks really nice. I think you're panicking over nothing. Try to relax and pamper yourself a bit.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 25/04/2023 07:21

Putting the colour aside I'd be chinning them about supplying a cheaper brand than what you ordered and paid for. There's a significant price difference. Have a look at the money-saving expert link the PP kindly posted. Give them a call and be strong and say, it's a completely different floor. Xx
