To ask the fitters to stop fitting my floor today

So this situation is absolutely ridiculous and I am perfectly aware that my pregnancy hormones are clouding my judgement here and I'm in an incredibly fortunate position, but I could really be doing with some urgent WWYD advice as I am so stressed over this. I am 33 weeks pregnant and have moved into a complete renovation project (not ideal I realise!). The last few weeks since I got the keys I've had to make a lot of quick (expensive) decisions re the design of the house to allow me to get in to it before the baby's born. I'd thought that would be really fun and exciting, but I'm actually really starting to feel pretty stressed over the whole thing and no longer trust my own judgement. I'm becoming quite teary and doubting every decision I make. One of the major outlays has been flooring. It accounts for a significant lump sum of the budget and the fitters started work yesterday and will complete today. As soon as I saw the flooring down it looked completely different from I had thought it would from when I saw it in the shop. I did immediately mention this to the fitters but they assured me it was the correct one. I'm not blaming anyone else here but me, as I do appreciate flooring looks different in natural/ artificial light etc but I immediately hated it. It really looks nothing like I thought it would. They are about halfway done. Should I call the shop and ask them to stop and at least try to salvage some of the unused packets of flooring? (It's herringbone design and there's a LOT of it as the floor space is massive) or should I let them finish and suck it up and not lose thousands of £?) I'm so angry at myself for making the wrong choice and of course I'm not suggesting that I don't pay for the flooring or wiggle out of fitting fees etc. I also realise this is causing me way more distress than it should- my hormones are all over the place.

I actually think it's nicer then the screenshot, absolutely beautiful.

adomizo · 25/04/2023 06:38

I've been here OP. It's such a stress. The floor is lovely....let then finish it..I found that my new floor didn't go with the wall paint....but once we had repainted it all came together very well. This isn't a good time to make any more expensive decisions...maybe just focus on what you really need to do.good luck !

pilates · 25/04/2023 06:38

Double-check with the shop it is the right colour. If it is correct, I think you will just have to accept it. Honestly, it doesn’t look awful and it may grow on you.

SkankingWombat · 25/04/2023 06:44

I agree with PPs that the googled images match your second image, but I would still phone the shop to check. I'm a carpenter and have laid many many floors over the years from various suppliers, and I can't recall the boxes/packaging ever saying a different (or no) brand or colour. The shade is usually printed in a sticker on the ends of the packs so they can be easily identified when stacked up, and the branding is often printed along the cardboard. I'm wondering if a third party product in a looky-likey shade has been used? Kind of like when people get a F&B colour mixed in Johnston's. Even if it is an exact colour match, I would be complaining as it isn't the brand you've paid for. It's one thing agreeing to do this between the client and tradesperson, but not OK to charge for the premium version and not supply it.

Greentree1 · 25/04/2023 06:45

If you complete it you could probably do a light sand and stain to give a colour you prefer, if it is actually wood not laminate.

But if the boxes are not saying the right colour I would query it, could be they substituted for some reason and thought it would be close enough.

Random789 · 25/04/2023 06:51

Sorry to double post, but I am SO prone to these sorts of awful, self-punishing ruminations about possibly wrong decisions and possible sub-optimal outcomes that I want to find the magic set of words that will make you feel better. You have made so many decisions as part of the redecoration, and the chances of all of them turning out exactly as you would have wanted them are really quite low.

There will always be niggles and (unless they are the contractor's fault and their responsibility to put right),we can learn to live with them and love them. It is low mood and self-recrimination that makes this harder than it needs to be. And you have so much going on at the moment it is no wonder that you are feeling stressed and tearful about this.

In a couple of months you will probably be feeling stressed and tearful about other things! The rawness of your disappointment about the floor will have faded.

supercatlady · 25/04/2023 06:52

If the boxes are unmarked is it possible they’ve used a cheaper “match” instead of the sample you chose? I can see the difference in the pic, so think it’s worth looking into.

Beautiful3 · 25/04/2023 06:52

I'd call the shop and say that it's looms different and thr boxes say something else. Please could they come out with the original sample, and check it's correct. They will come out, then you'll know either way. If it is correct, just let them finish it. I had a similar either with carpet, I thought it was neutral but looked yellowish. They came out with the sample, it was exactly the same. They said they use bright halogen lights in their shop, it makes the colours look different. The carpet grew on me after a fortnight.

MRex · 25/04/2023 06:53

Was it Ravello Driftwood that you meant to but instead of Belstaff? https://www.tapi.co.uk/laminate/ravello-driftwood

Check carefully all the paperwork, but I think the error was made when you were purchasing, which is almost impossible to prove; you can try but I'm not sure it's worth it unless you have something that proves your case. The good news is that either looks great though, and you may come to love your silver floor. Good luck!

This. If it’s their mistake get them to change it and if it’s your mistake go with it! Unless you are rich and then find out how much to change it!

Puckthemagicdragon · 25/04/2023 06:55

It's lovely but I think it is different to the sample. Query it and see what they say.

Ncfgjdo · 25/04/2023 06:56

This is what they've used- does seem to be a cheaper alternative

These were my thoughts too. For what it's worth, I think your floor looks beautiful, but if it's a knock off of what you ordered, then you are absolutely entitled to a complete refund. I'm the type who would let it go because I hate hassle of any kind. But I know DP would be like a dog with a bone if the colour was off to even the nth degree, even if the labels on the boxes were correct!

rose69 · 25/04/2023 06:57

Visit the shop with what is being laid so that you can see if it is different. If it's different ask for the manager. Easier to get things changed in person (they don't wasn't someone in a shop making a scene) than over the phone.

cocunut · 25/04/2023 06:58

I think it's lovely OP. Doesn't look grey to me. I find new flooring looks a bit strange first out the box. Once it's all done and you can run a mop over it I think it'll start to look a bit darker.

ralaa · 25/04/2023 07:00

I think they look very similar. Just different lighting on them.

I absolutely LOVE the colour of it.

Merrow · 25/04/2023 07:01

Ncfgjdo · 25/04/2023 06:56

I think your floor looks lovely, but you've not got what you paid for so should definitely complain!

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 25/04/2023 07:02

For what it’s worth, I really like the floor they have put down!

it’s not THAT different, after all

Clusterfunk · 25/04/2023 07:03

Kronor ex is a brand in its own right. They’ve given you the wrong thing I think!

Having said that, I think it looks lovely. I’d be asking for money back and keeping it!

Digimoor · 25/04/2023 07:05

If you were quoted for Ravello and they have supplied a different product then it's their error to fix

tatteddear · 25/04/2023 07:05

I had a similar experience with my flooring, which looks very like yours. I took ages choosing, trying to find the perfect balance between pale and warm. Thought I had. When it was being fitted I hated it! I thought it looked far too bleached out. And I was genuinely convinced it was not what I ordered. (It was).

Two days later when some of the rooms were completed I loved it! And I still do. The light at different times of day alters appearance.

I would double check it's what you ordered, but if not I would try and live with it. You will probably end up loving it, but even if not, the expense and pain of stopping and changing half way through wouldn't be worth it. There are always rugs if you can't stand to look at it!!

mnahmnah · 25/04/2023 07:06

I would stop them today and take one of the boxes, a sample of the floor that’s gone down, your receipt stating make and brand and see what they say

steppingcarefully · 25/04/2023 07:06

It does look the same as the Tapi website image but I would be questioning why the description says light brown but the boxes you have say silver and are not labelled Ravello Belstaff? Having said that I do think once it's all down and you have put all your furniture back it won't look so bad and you will get used to it.

KittyAlfred · 25/04/2023 07:06

I think it looks fine but it certainly isn’t the same colour as the sample in your first picture. I’m confused about the second picture though. Is that showing the type you chose? Because that does look like what they’ve put down.
