To ask the fitters to stop fitting my floor today

So this situation is absolutely ridiculous and I am perfectly aware that my pregnancy hormones are clouding my judgement here and I'm in an incredibly fortunate position, but I could really be doing with some urgent WWYD advice as I am so stressed over this. I am 33 weeks pregnant and have moved into a complete renovation project (not ideal I realise!). The last few weeks since I got the keys I've had to make a lot of quick (expensive) decisions re the design of the house to allow me to get in to it before the baby's born. I'd thought that would be really fun and exciting, but I'm actually really starting to feel pretty stressed over the whole thing and no longer trust my own judgement. I'm becoming quite teary and doubting every decision I make. One of the major outlays has been flooring. It accounts for a significant lump sum of the budget and the fitters started work yesterday and will complete today. As soon as I saw the flooring down it looked completely different from I had thought it would from when I saw it in the shop. I did immediately mention this to the fitters but they assured me it was the correct one. I'm not blaming anyone else here but me, as I do appreciate flooring looks different in natural/ artificial light etc but I immediately hated it. It really looks nothing like I thought it would. They are about halfway done. Should I call the shop and ask them to stop and at least try to salvage some of the unused packets of flooring? (It's herringbone design and there's a LOT of it as the floor space is massive) or should I let them finish and suck it up and not lose thousands of £?) I'm so angry at myself for making the wrong choice and of course I'm not suggesting that I don't pay for the flooring or wiggle out of fitting fees etc. I also realise this is causing me way more distress than it should- my hormones are all over the place.

It’s not what you ordered, so don’t let them lay any more until you’ve spoken to them.

I absolutely wouldn’t accept an inferior product so don’t focus on the colour, focus on the fact it is not what you paid for.

Absolutely this. Besides any colour issue, there can be huge differences in the quality of flooring, they can look the same initially but wear completely differently, poorer quality flooring often looks knackered within a short time.

Situations like this are so exhausting but I’d not be letting it drop, it’s tantamount to passing off.

Speaking as someone who did a back to brick large scale renovation and extension during my second pregnancy, I know that awful feeling of worrying you’re being emotionally driven/overreacting in the moment. But I look round my house now and wish I’d been even more assertive/questioning.

If it's real wood it will change with the light, quite drastically actually so be aware of you put a rug down turn you'll always need a rug in the area or you'll have a shade difference.

Bloopsie · 25/04/2023 07:53

I think it looks nice, i think once u got a rug on it the furniture in etc ans busy witg the baby you wont even think about twice a out the floor :P

  • sorry for typos toddler jumping on my lap
Girlattheback · 25/04/2023 07:55

It doesn’t seem like you have the flooring you ordered and paid for based on the product name on the boxes. Definitely call Tapi first thing and ask them to check.

We had a bedroom carpet laid in the wrong colour a few years ago, so mistakes do happen, the company swapped it out without quibble so it shouldn’t be an issue. Definitely call sooner rather than later though.

I guess this is what is meant by the term 1st world problems?

'First world problems' is an offensive term that suggests only people in developed countries have rich and interesting internal lives, whilst everyone else thinks of nothing but when they will eat again. When this is patently untrue. If you leave the West, you'll discover people everywhere complain about a myriad of issues.

So I'd encourage you to think of a more interesting riposte when someone presents what you believe to be a trivial problem.

Inkpotlover · 25/04/2023 07:55

They've sent you the wrong product, surely? You've paid for something that is £40 per square m and the one you've got, based on those boxes, is only £20 per square m. It also looks a lot more knotty than the one you ordered, which is why I think it doesn't look as nice.

Itakecreaminmycoffee · 25/04/2023 07:56

It sounds like they have sent you a cheap dupe and are passing it off as ravello. If it was ravello it would say so on the box.

If it's any consolation I think it looks lovely, but if you're not happy you need to make a complaint. Ask them why the box doesn't say ravello on it.

Doagooddeed · 25/04/2023 07:56

My partners best friend is a tiler and a very good one (he has done a lot of high end stuff for shops, dance clubs and footballers, both uk and abroad) and charges a fortune!

He says tell them to rip it up (they are outside drinking coffee) and replace for the manufacturer/type that you ve ordered, huge difference in quality.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 25/04/2023 07:56

Absolutely get them to stop.

That's not even the brand you ordered, let alone the colour.

I think they're pulling a fast one - getting you to pay for the expensive one, laying the one that's half the price, and pocketing the difference hoping you won't notice.

starfishmummy · 25/04/2023 07:58

Frauhubert · 25/04/2023 07:45

I am pretty sure it’s possible to get it professionally stained to a different shade?

I initially thought that too - if it was just tjst the OP has had a change if mind. But it seems they are fitting a cheaper brand than the OP ordered so irrespective of the colour it's wrong!

nomoneytreehere · 25/04/2023 07:58

John lewis do this too with carpet. I suspect it is legal but would expect them to change the packaging and not be so blatent about it.

SeatonCarew · 25/04/2023 07:59

Looks like they are passing off a cheaper product. If you get no joy with the shop, speak to your local trading standards.

ichifanny · 25/04/2023 07:59

God sake people it’s the wrong floor she paid for one and got another , stop telling her just to deal with it . Definitely make them refund you the difference if you decide to keep going , it’s a different brand and colour and not what they agreed to supply .

Itakecreaminmycoffee · 25/04/2023 08:00

I guess this is what is meant by the term 1st world problems?

So what are you saying? People are only allowed to post their problems on MN now if they are starving and needing to use a food bank or can't pay their gas bill and no one can ask advice about anything else?

🙄

Bedtimemode · 25/04/2023 08:00

Retailers will regularly rebrand/rename something before putting it on the shop floor, I think largely to stop people finding it somewhere else cheaper (I used to do this as part of my job)

Ravello Bellstaff from tapi carpets does seem to be Kronotext herringbone in silver Oak and at a marked up price unfortunately. They use the same photo of the kitchen on both websites. The sample looks like a slightly different shade though, you could see if the shop will lend it to you to check. There might just been a slight difference between batches. If theirs a big enough colour difference and you tell them you have found the same floor much cheaper elsewhere then they may offer you a discount at least.

I think it looks great BTW!

Bedtimemode · 25/04/2023 08:02

Ignore the typos please! Need coffee...

MorrisZapp · 25/04/2023 08:02

I'm surprised at these replies. I think you ordered a warm colour and have been given a cool one which does not resemble your chosen shade.

I'm obsessed with warm tones and won't have anything blue or gray in my house, this would be totally unacceptable to me.

I think your two pictures look totally different and I would stop the fitting now and ask for evidence that what you've chosen is what they're providing. If it didn't say silver on your order form but it says silver on the boxes then they're supplying you with the wrong product and are in breach of contract.

I would absolutely stop them now. You aren't getting what you paid for.

ArseMenagerie · 25/04/2023 08:02

The floors look beautiful !

I suspect this happens a lot when it comes to flooring, and if a customer questions that it looks different the fitters bullshit about the lighting and how larger areas look different from samples etc.

OP you definitely need to have a chat with them about the difference in price, but after reading the MSE thread i'm a bit worried there's going to be very little you can do.

Ncfgjdo · 25/04/2023 06:05

So picture 1 is what I thought it would be like and 2 is it down- I thought it would be more of a bleached natural tone.

I absolutely LOVE the floor that you have had installed, it's stunning.

MountainChalet · 25/04/2023 08:06

I would let them finish and keep it because it looks really nice but I'd ask refunded the difference of the floor prices.

MorrisZapp · 25/04/2023 08:08

I don't think it's helpful to tell the op that her floor is lovely. It isn't the colour she wanted and she clearly doesn't think it's lovely. People are allowed to have individual tastes.

ZeroWorshipHere · 25/04/2023 08:08

I’d be kicking up a stink about the fact they’ve charged you for one brand and are supplying a much cheaper one

MrsRickAstley · 25/04/2023 08:09

It looks fabulous. My dream floor. I love it !!!
