To ask the fitters to stop fitting my floor today

So this situation is absolutely ridiculous and I am perfectly aware that my pregnancy hormones are clouding my judgement here and I'm in an incredibly fortunate position, but I could really be doing with some urgent WWYD advice as I am so stressed over this. I am 33 weeks pregnant and have moved into a complete renovation project (not ideal I realise!). The last few weeks since I got the keys I've had to make a lot of quick (expensive) decisions re the design of the house to allow me to get in to it before the baby's born. I'd thought that would be really fun and exciting, but I'm actually really starting to feel pretty stressed over the whole thing and no longer trust my own judgement. I'm becoming quite teary and doubting every decision I make. One of the major outlays has been flooring. It accounts for a significant lump sum of the budget and the fitters started work yesterday and will complete today. As soon as I saw the flooring down it looked completely different from I had thought it would from when I saw it in the shop. I did immediately mention this to the fitters but they assured me it was the correct one. I'm not blaming anyone else here but me, as I do appreciate flooring looks different in natural/ artificial light etc but I immediately hated it. It really looks nothing like I thought it would. They are about halfway done. Should I call the shop and ask them to stop and at least try to salvage some of the unused packets of flooring? (It's herringbone design and there's a LOT of it as the floor space is massive) or should I let them finish and suck it up and not lose thousands of £?) I'm so angry at myself for making the wrong choice and of course I'm not suggesting that I don't pay for the flooring or wiggle out of fitting fees etc. I also realise this is causing me way more distress than it should- my hormones are all over the place.

I love it and prefer the pic on the right it’s more cool/neutral tone whereas the left pic is more yellow tone. I do agree they look different colours tho… but the right is much nicer.

YukoandHiro · 25/04/2023 06:20

Sorry OP but suck it up. When you're actually living in it with furniture on top etc it will look different and the reality is that your baby is nearly here and having no floor or half a floor and a newborn )the most likely outcome) will be much more stressful.

This literally happened to me. Down to the colour and style! The money is spent OP...they will charge you anyway I think. I loved my floor once down. I HATED it as they started laying it. I would give it a week then decide if you want to raise it with the company.

They won't charge anyway if the mistake was theirs. We got a £1000 reduction of our fitted kitchen because Magnet put the wrong floor down.

Hand hold for you here, whilst I’m drinking my coffee and heading out shortly to another day in paradise (filthy dirty construction site).
I can inform you from experience the amount of clients, who get stressed and in some cases distraught about flooring is being installed is very real.
Can you explain what you don’t like about the flooring? To dark, to light? Wrong shade?
Sometimes flooring can look very different depending on the lighting as you’ve quite rightly stated.
OP do you have a sample of what you selected? If so put it next to what the fitters have installed and check if there is any discernible difference.
If the sample does actually match what is being installed you have two options. if it doesn’t hit up the stockist pronto.
If you really feel that you simply can not live with it, halt any further installation. However bear in mind the financial consequences of this, the fitters will still have to be paid, and if the stockist agrees to take back the material I hate to be the bearer of bad news they normally charge a restocking charge which can be anywhere between 20 to 45% dependant on if it’s a special non stock item.

Just as a side note you’re currently viewing a massive expanse of flooring with no furniture etc at the moment and it can be overwhelming. Once the fixtures and fittings are in it can completely transform the overall appearance of the areas.

So in essence you could cancel and take the hit, or might actually like it when everything is pulled together.

It’s a really difficult decision I know, but honestly these are the only two options as I can see from what you’ve wrote.

TwoShades1 · 25/04/2023 06:25

I would confirm that the flooring you order is the one being laid. If it is, then put the sample on the floor and see if they match. If they don’t you can take a photo and go back to the store to show that the sample you ordered from and your floor are different. Assuming it’s the correct flooring and same and sample I would just leave it. It will look quite different in different lighting too.

If you google ‘Ravello Belstaff’ flooring, the pictures look exactly like your floor. They call it light brown

Catlover77 · 25/04/2023 06:26

Pale brown with a bleached tone

I was just about to say exactly this. I've just googled and when shown with a large section of the flooring instead of just a square like the sample they all look exactly like the OPs second picture.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/04/2023 06:29

They look the same. Lovely colour.

Setyoufree · 25/04/2023 06:29

I prefer the one you've got than the one you were aiming for! But either way, I'd push on through now. Having a laid floor is way better than no floor, and means you can worry about it in a couple of years when you've got more headspace.

mauveiscurious · 25/04/2023 06:30

It looks lovely and as others have said it will look different with furniture etc

Ncfgjdo · 25/04/2023 06:30

Yes I do see that- and I just want to reiterate that I'm not insisting that they have given me the wrong flooring or that anyone is to blame other than me- it's just that I might have made a terrible choice and wonder if I should do something about it now or not.

I think tbh you should stick with it. If you'd moved in with that floor would you be ripping it up and replacing it?

You're not to blame either for how you feel. You're stressed, heavily pregnant and you've just moved house so it's not wonder you're all in a muddle but honestly any flooring is better than no flooring and in a few weeks time when baby arrives you'll be so glad it's all sorted and you won't need to juggle getting new flooring with a newborn.

Theraffarian · 25/04/2023 06:32

I’ve just googled as well and your laid floor which is lovely , looks like a match for what you ordered. Could it just be your camera phone image is slightly off colour , but it’s what you picked in the shop ? Tapi sells this , do you have a spare piece the fitters are putting down that you could take in for your own peace of mind and match up to make sure they are putting the right one down .

delilabell · 25/04/2023 06:33

I've just looked it up on tapi too! Nowhere does it say silver though and even describes it as light brown. I don't think they've sent the right thing

I really like it.

I'd give it 6 months and I think you'll really like it.

I agree. I'm wondering if they've sent an unbranded substitute.

Random789 · 25/04/2023 06:34

I think it looks lovely, but definitely ask the shop to check that it is the brand and colour that you ordered.
If it isn't, get them to take it up and replace it at their cost. I had my roof replaced a few months ago and the roofers had a bit of a conniption fit and used red ridge tiles instead of matching the black that was there before (and present all along our terrace). I phoned my builder, who had engaged them as sub=contractors, and he immediately told them to get back and replace them. Which they did. In cold wet wind and at their expense.
Thank god it was my lovely friendly decent builder that had to deal with it, not feeble me.

However, I suspect that your floor may well be the correct brand and colour - contracts usually include a specification that tones may differ from the sample, since there is so much natural variation in how wood takes a colour.
If that is the case, remember how much your feelings are influenced by the stress andpressure you are under. When we are feeling low, we ruminate horribly about our decisions and magnify small difficulties. It may well be that your low state of mind is making you feel much worse about this than you need to. The tones might vary in loads of ways -- a variation in the opposite direction might have given the floor an orangy hue, which would have been worse. And time will affect them to0, as well as any maintainence regime you use on the floor. When it needs a polish, you could choose a product thst will add a little warmth to the colour?

Roselilly36 · 25/04/2023 06:34

It looks beautiful, once you have decorated and added final touches the floor won’t be the focus. It will blend in lovely.

Good luck, hope it will be done and settled before baby arrives.

Ncfgjdo · 25/04/2023 06:35

Here is another picture of it from the shop when I was comparing carpets just to add further confusion!

This happened to me and luckily the fitters were amazing and said to call the store. Like you, they arrived with grey and I did a double take thinking I didn't order that. Luckily I had taken pics (like you) and remembered thinking when I picked the flooring that my wheat coloured rug was going to blend in too much.

Well, it started a mega saga. Yes, the product delivered was incorrect. I had over a week of no flooring while they sorted it out. Floors got laid and then carpet guy, from same place, made a god almighty mess and got glue all over my new floors and new mats and the hallway had to be replaced. The store were ridiculously condescending during the entire ordeal. What should have been 3 contacts for measure and quote, flooring then carpet turned into a 5 month saga with over 30 contacts and me finishing up massively pissed off for being spoken to like an imbecile. I left an online review that's been read over 1200 times, so hopefully no-one else goes through the same. It's a big name company where I am, so people still use them but hopefully I've helped someone out.

tenbob · 25/04/2023 06:36

I am biased because I have a very similar floor but I think it will look really lovely when it’s finished.

Definitely not something to stress about or something you will notice when all your furniture is in

Twiglets1 · 25/04/2023 06:36

Ncfgjdo · 25/04/2023 06:30

In that case I think you are catastrophising - it isn't a "terrible choice" at all, in fact it looks a nice colour. It just looks a bit different than the floor you were imagining in your head.
I would let the whole floor be fitted. It will look different with furniture in and if you still hate it in a couple of years you can change it at that point.
