To think that this FLY business is just another way of trying to convince women that service is what they are meant for?

We've had house-work-is-what-FAther-Xmas-made-women-for.
We've had housework is the standard on which a woman's morals are judged.
Now we have housework as therapy: FInally Loving Yourself. What's loving about knocking yourself out with drudgery? Surely it's more self-loving to say, bollocks to doing more than the minimum, mess is no big deal and my time is far too precious to wipe skirting boards twice a day?

for flylady people

policywonk · 17/02/2008 11:07

MadHouse - if it works for you and frees your time up for more interesting things then that's fine with me (because you need my permission, don't you).

ludaloo · 17/02/2008 11:08

madamez I think we should all be taking tips from you...not the FLY lady, because if you can tidy the entirety of your house in 15 mins a day, and still manage to find stuff...not trip over stuff...have clean and tidy places to cook and eat...etc.etc. Then I would love to know how you are doing it!
You could make a killing with that one! You should set your own website up!

ludaloo · 17/02/2008 11:16

LOL custardo

glitterfairy · 17/02/2008 11:19

Hello ludaloo and funky havent read all of this thread but as a full time working single mum of three flying keeps me sane. If I did not have some order I would go to pieces and when I am not on flying my house is a pit!

I loathe housework but in my house (even though I have a cleaner) if I dont do it no one does. The kids help and when I am orderly somehow they are as well.

The other thing I would say is a huge shout out for the fly threads as they are always supportive and are a great group of people.

Hi GF

BabiesEverywhere · 17/02/2008 11:23

I like FLyLady because :-
: It encourages you not to do excessive housework daily but rather to slowly work on sorting out your house and to stop it building up again.
: I like lists
: I have found quite a lot of my house so far. Just a few hotspots to keep attacking and a lot of boxes in our room, the last room to be organised.
: I like waking up to a clean kitchen

I hate Flylady because:-

: Sweetly sick phrases
: Some of the time cutting measures I find yucky, like using the bath towel to clean the bath !!!
: All the emails, I turned them off
: Always felt guilty about the ironing.

In short I feel inspired to go an join the Fly Ladies thread again

glitterfairy · 17/02/2008 11:24

Hi luda and babies

glitterfairy · 17/02/2008 11:26

I just wanted to add that I loathe housework and anything that makes it easier is good for me. My house is messy and chaotic but frankly I yearn for calm and modernist serenity which is impossible unless some sort of order is put into place. Fly just gives you tips and as I said the threads are incredibly supportive.

Tortington · 17/02/2008 11:29

flylady ............ not flyman

and not flyperson

ludaloo · 17/02/2008 11:34

Ah...FLYLady comes from the person who created FLY, she is a lady...and calls herself the FLYLady

glitterfairy · 17/02/2008 11:34

LOl custardo it just says it all women do housework and that hasnt changed in centuries. I dont think fly person would give me the sense of satisfaction in the acknowledgement that men dont generally help or if they do they do the nice bits! There was a piece of research recently which reflected that when men do help they do certain things and not the basics.

MrsMattie · 17/02/2008 11:38

Stop talking about it and go and clean your houses, you manky slatterns!

glitterfairy · 17/02/2008 11:43

Just a thought but why does no one have a go at mumsnet then? Should it be personsnet/dadsnet and mumsnet/parentsnet?

No as luda says it is fly lady because she is a woman and mums net because it was created by mums.

BabiesEverywhere · 17/02/2008 11:43

Actually the FLYLady (writer of the website who is female) refers to the people who follow her stuff as FLYbabies no gender

Boco · 17/02/2008 11:46

I was in Waterstones yesterday and there was the Mother's Day display, and it was all 'how to be a domestic goddess' and 'housework tips and hints' - which was quite appalling really. I made it clear to dp where I would shove it if he ever bought me a book on housework for mothers day, or any other time.

Haven't read the thread, but FLY seems like a helpful tool for people who need help - like me - I don't mind there being a helpful tool, as long as it's not dressed up as a gift and given to me for mothers day.

ludaloo · 17/02/2008 11:52

oooh I have a few housework books! I find them quite fascinating really...not so sure I'd have liked one for mothers day though.

policywonk · 17/02/2008 11:53

My MIL gave me a book about cleaning for Christmas. Think she was dropping a hint... To be fair, it was about eco cleaning, so it is a bit useful and I don't feel that I can just throw it into the nearest charity shop. However, I was still mildly irritated.

Boco · 17/02/2008 11:54

My dp has a housework book full of hints and tips that he loves - cleaning the toilet with vinegar and that sort of thing. Maybe I'll buy him another one for father's day!

MrsMattie · 17/02/2008 11:55

Jesus!@policywonk. I would have chucked it in the recycling box. Eco-friendly, no?

milou2 · 17/02/2008 11:55

I find Flylady a helpful tool too.

I love the concept that I am not behind.

I love the idea that it is ok to spend a set amount of time on something I choose to do, then stop and feel proud of myself. I can choose the amount of time and the task.

I am being flywashed = brainwashed into thinking kind thoughts about myself and my life and all the different parts of it that need attention.

For people like me the very idea that it is ok to Finally Love Yourself is truly the opposite of what I took in while growing up and being an adult for the past 20 years.

ludaloo · 17/02/2008 11:58

Awww milou what a lovely concept you have there!
