I'm interested to hear what it sounds like. For it to be going off all over the country at once, in all households and shops is exciting.

It's something completely new and feels kinda like something from Black mirror.

Maybe I'm just weird 😂

A heatwave does not necessitate receiving a government alert on one's phone when as you say, the met office already provide these weather warnings, and surely people themselves - most would have some common sense! Sorry, don't buy it.

Wild fires, industrial fires, terrorist threats, gunman threats, wind storms, flooding etc...... I could carry on.

Up to you in your 60 years in the UK that you don't buy it, it just seems pathetic that you don't see the need for this. This is not new technology. The UK are very late in bringing this in, a lot of other countries have had this for years.

I'm almost 60 - I have never experienced any extreme weather in the UK

You weren't here for the hurricane?

That poster isn't quite old enough for the 62-63 Big Freeze. Should have noticed the 76 heatwave, the 78 storm surge, the 87 snows, winters of 90-91 and 09-10, assorted flash flooding and whatnots at some point, though.

The government have made public information films in the past , so I just think this is the mobile version of this really and works well in other countries, so I've read anyway.
Mine didn't go off anyway !

Emigratingimmigrant · 23/04/2023 17:18

I don't know why people think it's because of nuke. It's not like that would be any help to anyone here? 🤷🏻 It's not like people have solid spaces to hide in. afaik most houses don't have any basement/cellar etc especially post 1960s builds. With the state of large percentage of houses when it comes to draught they wouldn't suffice during fallout... I see school traffic, imagining evacuation traffic... Not a chance to get out either
If anyone actually cared enough to throw one at UK....

The government have accessed everyone’s phone numbers to send a blaring alarm, without permission, whether people want this or not for ridiculous and pie-in-the-sky reasons - in case of what? earthquakes? Tornados?

Iirr they don't use your actual phone numbers. It's linked to the network systems, not phone numbers.

This. It’s areas around a mast, not phone numbers. But geographically based.

Agreed. I hit it to turn the sound off and the message disappeared.

Same here.

If it had been a real warning I'd have missed the message.

Why not have the message stay in your messaging app or in 'Notifications?'

I still have the message in my texts.

BringItBackBruno · 23/04/2023 21:49

I finally got it at 6.30. What a shitshow. (O2 user)

Interesting. The first thing I did was check my messages.

Which network are you with? I'm with O2.

whyhere · 24/04/2023 08:03

I just got it again, five minutes ago, but only on one of my two phones (both with O2; and both went off at 3pm-ish yesterday). Any ideas why?

Are you travelling to work by any chance? I didn't get the alarm yesterday but I wonder if it will come when I go into town and move past more phone towers.

No; sitting at home in exactly the same place as yesterday!

MartinFowler · 24/04/2023 09:20

@GoinSouth really? 🤣🤣 Maybe it's the paranoia meaning you sit indoors with the curtains closed. That's why you're not noticing the weather

purser25 · 24/04/2023 11:14

I was a bit excited but nothing happened

@You can see your history of emergency messages in Settings / Notifications / Advanced / Emergency alerts.

JoWawa · 24/04/2023 14:12

Didn't happen for me.
