I’ve turned my emergency alert off because I’m such a rebel!

Urgh

Facebook … numerous posts over the last days consisting of:

“EMERGENCY ALERT SWITCHED OFF!!”

“Leaving my emergency alert on so I can reply and tell them to go and fuck themselves!”

“Remember everyone, emergency alerts can and should be switched off by tomorrow!”

“That’s my emergency alert turned off lol”

Why??? What’s so big and clever about turning the alert off? Don’t people realise that most countries have had this for years? Turning it off doesn’t make you Billy Big Bollocks and boasting about it just makes you look stupid!

YABU - I’ve turned mine off and I’m proud of it! Down with the establishment!

YANBU - people are ridiculous

@BillyAteMyChips and all other naysayers, it's not really for apocolyptic emergencies, it's for, in general local things. So for instance if there was a large industrial fire in your area and people needed to be advised to stay indoors with windows closed, or flood advice.

The fatalities at Grenfell may have been significantly lower if this had been in force and they could have text people to get out once they realised they needed to evacuate.

Oh for goodness sakes it's for missing children and severe weather! Grow up!

Severe weather warnings?? Don't the Met Office issue those in advance? So you're told that there is a risk of flooding and you take the necessary action (whatever that may be), then as the water is running into your house you get an "alert" "severe flooding in x, avoid" how is that even helpful?

ShagratandGorbag4ever · 23/04/2023 11:34

I bet the same people put their empty Stella cans in the general waste bin to establish their nonconformist credentials.

GoodChat · 23/04/2023 11:31

Severe weather? So that the public become even more terrified of climate change and are whipped into a panic endlessly... living in a state of perpetual fear.

Or to tell you there's a flood warning so you can make the necessary arrangements...

I get those alerts from the environment agency anyway. I have text and email alerts but you can also have a phone call as well. I turned that off when they called in the middle of the night about a flood alert.

Timeforchangeithink · 23/04/2023 11:35

@toomuchlaundry I didn't know it existed on my phone last time I travelled overseas.

This explains why we don’t have hurricanes in the UK. It requires higher sea temps than are possible for us https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/weather/tropical-cyclones/hurricane#:~:text=Do%20hurricanes%20occur%20in%20the,cannot%20form%20at%20our%20latitudes.

Although the wind storms we have can be very damaging they are nothing like the hurricanes in terms of maximum wind speed and storm surge risk. The 1987 storm wasn’t a hurricane, although it would probably have been a red weather warning if it happened today.

we dont have hurricanes. we have wind storms that we call hurricanes.

It doesnt matter if the wind strength is not a strong, it isn't the wind strength that does the damage. Its the weakness of what it is hitting. A very mild wind would do massive damage in an area that had had no wind at all for 20 years.

I'm staggered by the number of people advertising their ignorance by saying "I wouldn't want to know if I was going to be nuked and the UK doesn't get tsunamis therefore this is worthless/obviously a coverup for something sinister"

Admittedly I work in a related area so have given this more thought than most, but surely five minutes thought would tell you that this could be useful for:
chemical escape
active shooters
river flood
sea flood
flash flood
urban fire
wildfire
tornado (yes we have them in the UK)
terrorist attack
unexploded bomb
gas leak
major road incident
imminent extreme windstorm
and yes, even nuclear incidents - there are many scenarios short of full scale WWIII where an alert could be lifesaving.

Surely you could think of these in the time it took you to type a post advertising your lack of imagination?

I imagine it'll come with a message
Say the Cumbria shootings
So if you get a message saying there's a man with a gun around the corner shooting people, you'll just walk around the corner because you don't listen to what they say? Confused

Or it'll say something like chemical spill at X, avoid area/stay inside

Won't a siren alert the man with the gun to your location also?

Conkersinautumn · 23/04/2023 11:38

I've left it on. If there's an emergency I would want to know so I can fit in a couple of final choice words to a certain person. I know I'm petty.

because the "independent questioning" isn't likley to be "independent questioning".

It is likely to be people not capable or educated or knowledgeable enough to "question independently", mindlessly copying stupid nonsense off the internet, because they are flattered into thinking they are "independently questioning" something, when it is the exact opposite.

What are the many valid reasons why a 10 sec alarm would need to be turned off? I can think of a couple but not many. Mine is staying on anyway.

  1. In Labour
  2. In a meeting or place which you need to be able to hear what's going on
  3. If you have a headache :)
  4. If you are the reason for the alert going off
  5. Sleeping after a night shift or illness
  6. Anxiety issues that mean you would panic and not follow instructions anyway
  7. To be able to boast on social media that its been turned off.
ohnoherethetroublecomes · 23/04/2023 11:42

The alarm is already used in Cornwall for when the schools up the M5 go on holiday. You're all just catching up

ThankmelaterOkay · 23/04/2023 11:42

I don’t have any common sense, so I’m leaving mine on.

toomuchlaundry · 23/04/2023 11:42

But why does it need questioning? Other countries use it, it is a technological advance from an air raid system

Flood warnings are provided on a property basis to people who live in flood risk areas, but not everyone. If there was a severe flood warning it wouldn’t reach tourists or commuters / those travelling. This could be useful in those circumstances.

Questioning is allowed. But if you behave like a conspiracy nutter you'll get called one. Sorry.

This is a text which goes off to help keep you safe, just like a smoke alarm.

Do you seriously think smoke alarms are there to control us or spy on us?

There is no conspiracy.

If you are stupid enough to not want to be proactive and keep yourself safe then turn it off, no one is forcing you to have it on.

The world is too overpopulated anyway.

That’s correct @Kyse - there is a relatively short text limit but enough to say 1. What the hazard is 2. What action to take 3. Where to find out more info

Turned the sound on my mobiles up so everyone can hear it 😀 tbh if Putin was to nuke us not sure I would want to know.

I have done the same.

I live with someone who pays no attention to the world about them so I don't know if they are aware if this, so it may be interesting.

I’ve gone 43 years without an emergency warning, and I intend to continue through my life without this unnecessary nanny state type alarm.

Are you for real? You sound like some right wing, swivel eyed Brexiteer but I’m sure you aren’t.

Hello sadiq Khan, anyone questions anything they are right wing 😂 pathetic name calling unless you agree with the corrupt narratives of today.
